My sons have been collecting travel patches since they were quite young and have run out of room in their patch displays. We went online to look for other display options and they decided that they wanted to have their patches sewn onto blankets they could snuggle with or display on their beds. I know very little about fabric or sewing so I'm not sure what fabric and/or brand to choose. I want something sturdy, soft, and machine washable since kids are messy. My older son would like navy blue but is open to other colors. I'm willing to spend a good amount on this since it has the potential to become an heirloom object but I don't want to spend a fortune. I am willing to have it sewn if necessary but already made would be easier.

Any suggestions?

Have you ever seen the quilts made out of tee shirts? (Many people do it for their kids with a collection of their memorable tees - I want to do them myself but haven't gotten around to it yet.) Maybe you could do something similar, but with travel patches instead? Perhaps they could be sewn onto fabric and then quilted? There are lots of people who can do this if you search around, even by word of mouth.

We actually have a t-shirt quilt made from my dh's ratty old fraternity t-shirts. It was my way of getting them out of the closet because they were taking over. I thought about a quilt but we're far from done collecting badges. I want something that we can sew patches onto as we get them. I'm open to a premade generic quilt as long as it's sturdy and the patches can be sewn onto it.

I don't know anything about sewing but I can suggest checking out pinterest.
I find so many great ideas there.

Teach them to crochet. Then you can get a cottage blanket business going.

You can purchase, basically, any blanket (ready made) and sew the patches onto it. Just pick a blanket that you/your sons like and go with it.
