Help me... figure out the country?!

My brother is on a flight to Sydney right now (from San Francisco)

I've been checking the status periodically throughout the day and it popped up canceled so I called Qantas to see what was going on.

The lady told me (after 20 min. on hold) that the flight was diverted, she couldn't tell me why, to someplace that SOUNDED LIKE "New Mia" to me. I asked her to repeat it and got NOWHERE

So.. now DH and I are wondering where the heck this mystery place is.

Anyone have any ideas??

Guesses:

Narita airport which is in Tokyo Japan.

My best guess would be "New Gunnea" as in Papua New Gunnea or Indonesia. I can imagine that either with a thick Australian accent it may sound more like New Mia and they are pretty close to Australia (though North and Sydney os on the Southern side) at least so maybe somwhat plausible for a diversion

I can't cut an paste the image. It is on a quantas route map so they fly to this city and it is between san francisco and sydney.

I looked at the map on their website but it was one of those interactive annoying ones and I didn't get anywhere.

That one is pretty good!!


The lady from Qantas said he should land about 6:30pm (our time) so I'll know for sure then.

You are welcome. I love a good mystery. I am home early from work because I had to go get a sick child. Watching my Phillies in the playoff and surfing the net a bit. Not a bad way to pass the time.

depart SFO- 22:40
arrive Noumea- 4:39
depart Noumea- 6:50
arrive Sydney- 9:55
