Hi everyone! We're staying offsite for the very first time this trip (doing a split stay at the Westgate just south of Animal Kingdom and POR). We have never stayed offsite before (well, I did when I was 8 years old, but that doesn't count :rotfl:). What do you love about staying offsite? What don't you like? How is driving? Should I avoid I-4 at all costs? We're not far from World Drive, which is good, and I think we're going to go to the Walmart for groceries in Kissimmee. Any advice would be FABULOUS! :goodvibes :worship:

I am not exactly sure of the location of Westgate because there is Westgate Resort, Westgate Towers, Westgate Blue Tree... If you give an exact location, we might be able to help you a bit more. The reason I ask this is because if it is the one on 192 West, you can get to Disney easily using the Sherbeth Road shortcut. Here is a map that shows Westgate on it (on the left) and the Sherbeth Road shortcut on the right.
http://www.kissimmee-us192.com/map/map2/kiss192map2.htm

As for avoiding I-4, we use I-4 because we stay our near Champions Gate and it has never been a problem for us but we travel early in the morning and late at night. It can get a little crowded on a weekend night near Downtown Disney, but other than that it is not too bad.

I also tried looking Westgate up and saw that there is more than one to choose from. I did get the sense, though, that Westgate has villas which have more space than a regular hotel room. We used to stay on-site and eventually bought a timeshare at Orange Lake which is in Kissimmee. We are actually much happier being offsite for a few reasons. We are in a spacious 2br,, 2 bath villa with a seperate living / eating area. No more cramped hotel room. This gives us all a little space from one another which has been nice as our DD has grown into a teenager. We also like a break from the noise / hubbub that comes from being on property. We are still no further than a 15 minute drive from the parks so we can still easily take a break during the day and go back out, and when we do we have a quiet place to retreat to. We also like trying restaurants outside of the parks. We do make ADRs for a few days during the week but we are not restricted to WDW restaurants / eating establishments. The other advantage is that we have laundry in our unit so I can throw in a load of laundry at night while we are getting ready for bed and don't have to go home at the end of the trip with three suitcases full of dirty laundry. I know when we stayed at POR there was laundry available but it was out near the quiet pool and I would have had to carry it back and forth and it would have cut into our day moreso than having it in our room.

I would say there are nice things about staying on-site, but there are also nice things about staying off-site. Stay open minded. I am sure you will have a wonderful trip either way. ;)

We just came back a few days ago and we, too did a split stay between Windsor Hills and AKL.

What I like the most about the rental house we had was the space - everyone had a place to go if they wanted to go to sleep early, watch a different TV program, find a quiet place to read a book or just be by themselves. We made breakfast every day - sometimes cereal, or pancakes or scrambled eggs. Saved on money and gave us a break from eating out every meal.

Being able to do laundry also was huge. We did 13 loads total in 10 days since we found ourselves using two changes of clothes every day. It was really hot and humid so we would go to the park and change when we got home. We also had a pool home, so we were able to take a quick dip whenever we wanted without walking to the main pool - good when your feet have had enough.

We were in the pool home first before moving to AKL for two nights. When we opened the door - well, let's just say it felt claustrophobic with four people in one room. Granted, the resort was beautiful and we were able to take advantage of extra magic hours (MK till 2:00 am, anyone?). But the change in space and privacy required an adjustment to our thinking.2

For groceries, if you are at Westlake on 192 and Old Lake Wilson Rd., there is a Super Target that is west on 192 about 3 miles. It is closer than WalMart - that is on 27 north of 192. They have a full target and a full grocery. Pricing example - case of water at Publix on 192 - $7.99; case of water at Target - $2.99. I'm not kidding. In many cases, Target was 50% cheaper than Publix.

Have fun!

We're staying at Windor Hills in the 4-bed/4-bath house in June 2011. Whole family is excited about the private pool and all the space. DS has volunteered to grill steaks one night.

Glad to hear about the Target. We don't have super Target up here and had planned on Wal-mart, but if Target is closer...great!

Have never stayed off-site before, but the last time with three families it was such a hassle that no one had a very good time and can't beat the prices at Romancing the Mouse (GS can't wait to stay in the Indiana Jones themed bedroom!) http://www.romancingthemouse.com/id32.html They are about 1/2 the price of Disney Mod and you get so much more! Maybe it's just that after so many years of on-site you get tired of the rat race and want a little more quiet relaxing time.

DD and I both look forward to being able to do laundry during the week and not going to the laundromat and waiting around for it to get done.

Just returned from an offsite trip and I can tell you it was great! It's been many years since we stayed offsite and I found the savings in eating offsite as well as ease of getting around with a car vs Disney transportation couldn't be beat! Don't be intimidated by I-4....it can save lots of time and it's rarely jammed up.

Have a great trip! :thumbsup2

Just returned from a stay at a 7 bedroom vacation home in Emerald Island. I stayed at POR Riverside for 4 nights with my girls before hand and although we had fun and I loved the resort, the house was WAY BETTER. There were 11 of us staying at the house (4 teenagers) and 7 adults and we never felt crowded in the house. Breaks were more relaxing at the house, and having a kitchen, laundry and our own pool was incredible. Everyone loved it!!

For the majority of my trips to WDW, I've stayed offsite because for a family of 5 (4 girls!), one bathroom just won't suffice! We've actually stayed at Westgate numerous times, and although it's different than staying On-property, there are definitely some benefits. For one, you have ROOM to spread out and won't be literally living on top of each other for the duration of your trip. Like you said, you can also pick up groceries and save money on food. My family would almost always eat breakfast in our villa before going over to the parks!

As for what I don't like about staying off-property...No Extra Magic Hours. Much less flexibility if your group wants to split up. For example, my sisters and I would prefer to spend the bulk of our vacation at the parks, while my parents would rather lounge by the pool. Staying off-property with only one rental car makes that much more difficult!

I think this question depends on the personality of your own family. We're a family of 4 (dad, mom, boys - 8 and 4) and were travelling with my wife's parents. We flew in, preferred to stay together, and preferred to have a van in case we wanted to do some other things. Because of the age of our boys, Extra Magic Hours were not on our wish list.

Having stayed at the Caribbean before, I compared 2 moderate rooms to Windsor Hills and found there simply was no comparison, on paper.

We rented a 3 BR townhome. Wife and I had king BR, 2 young sons shared a professionally decorated Mickey BR with twin beds, and wife's parents had queen BR on main floor...all ensuite. Lining room, dining room, breakfast bar, full kitchen, patio and splash pool, full size washer dryer.

With van rental, parking and gas, and eating whenever/wherever we wanted, we spent about $1,500 less than we would have spent for 2 moderate rooms on-site...and getting an on-site suite was even worse.

The boys having their own room was huge at night and in the morning. At night we (the adults) could sit in the living room, have a beverage, watch TV and talk, surf the 'net for attractions we hadn't thought of, all without waking the boys. (This paid off directly when we discovered that the shuttle was scheduled for a rare night launch while we were ther. We simply adjusted the schedule and my kids got to see something they might not see again.)

At the CR, even washing your hands in the middle of the night might wake someone.

In the morning, everyone got up at their own time. And one child getting up and going downstairs to have breakfast with grandma and grandpa didn't wake the other. They had choices for breakfast - cereal and fruit, frozen waffles ('cause you have a toaster), eggs ('cause you have a stove, pan, spatula and plates), etc. And nobody ever ate anything sitting on a bed.

At the Caribbean, we kept some fruit in our room but usually I walked across the resort to the food court to bring stuff back.

Full kitchen and Publix nearby allowed us to stock a variety of stuff for those times we just wanted a snack or sandwich.

The laundry was nice because we packed way less clothing, and there is not much I look forward to less than putting on cold, damp trunks that didn't dry in my room while I was at the park. This allowed us to check the kids' car seats on the flight without paying for extra bags. To be fair, at CR the coin laundry was close to our room but someone had to attend to it.

Driving to and from parks, parking, all were a breeze. We loaded up just outside our front door (about 3 feet away). At the parks we had to walk a little farther than if we were on the bus, and same was true at end of day. But once the kids were seated in the van, they could sleep until we got to our front door.

At the Caribbean, we walked a lot farther to catch the bus in the morning, waited for the bus going to the correct park, then waited at other stops. At the end of the day, someone would usually give up a seat for my wife and our son. (Thanks to the many of you who did so!) But back at the Caribbean, it was a repeat of the morning. Stopping at numerous stops before getting to ours, then hiking across a walmart sized parking lot to our room. No question about it, from door to gate and back took much less time by van than bus.

Food. When you're at the park, everyone eats the same things. At the Caribbean, we found that the resort food was about the same thing as in the parks. However, staying off-site, we ate a familar restaurants - Olive Garden, Friday's - and even some fast food. With sensory overload that Disney provides, it was nice for the kids to decompress doing things they would do at home.

And finally, the grounds. Windsor Hills is an immaculate gated community and our townhome was clean, fresh and updated. And our owner was a phone call away. We were fortunate to be just across from the main pool and rec room, and with dozens of happy, spashing kids, I don't know how you do much better. Slides, shooting fountains, and did I mention, lots of kids? If we didn't want to go to the main pool, we had our own screened in spash pool. Used it every day.

Each preceived advantage to staying offsite can be mitigated, but it seems one be hard-pressed to mitigate the totality. I'm sure someday the kids will want the Extra Magic Hours so we'll be back on (maybe for a split).

The irony is that I'd pay more for what I got at Windsor Hills...a lot more. But I paid less...a lot less. Go figure.

As a PP stated, there are many Westgates. We owned at Westgate Vacation Villas. The Westgate Town Center is also on the same property. Also as a PP stated, there is a "backway" to AK thru Sherberth Rd. You won't believe how close it is. We use I-4 and have never had a problem. Honestly, I got to MK and the other parks much quicker when I stayed at Westgate and drove my own car vs. Disney transportation. Also, I think the extra room just can't be beat. Being able to put my 2 children to sleep and still stay awake is great. I also enjoy packing lunches to save money. We also use the Super Walmart. We freeze the water bottles the night before so they double for ice as well as keep the water really cold the next day. We also buy pringles in the can as it keeps the chips from crumbling. If it is Westgate Vacation Villas you are staying at, they have swan boats you can use, as well as mini golf. Their pools are great (no slides) but they are still great. You can also take a little train ride around the complex, rent bikes, and they have a movie theatre. They also have a pizza hut on site that will deliver. There are a ton of restaurants on 192...the standard fast food ones, plus there is an Outback Steakhouse and many others. If I may make a suggestion, do not sit thru the timeshare presentation there if you can get away with it, unless you want to purchase. It is 3 hours long, no matter what they tell you and is a very hard sell. Even though we own, they try to get us to sit through it every year. All in all, it is a fabulous place though. Let me know if you have other questions and I would be happy to help.

So well said and my thoughts exactly:thumbsup2 We went in November and stayed at WH with twin 5 year olds. Since EMH weren't an issue, there was no comparison. Its different but a GREAT different in my opinion. Good luck planning!

What an awesome comparison between on-site and off-site. :thumbsup2 I have yet to stay on-site, I have always stayed offsite. Due to more space, and more food choices, I've never had the desire to stay on-site. I always say maybe when DD4 gets older she may want to be engulfed in the magic 24/7. But at this time its just not desireable, convenient or cost efficient. I think you have summed it better than most arguments on this board. I am also a Westgate owner. And as PP have stated, Westgate is a hard-sell resort and those salespeople can be ruthless. However, the resort is still nice with lots for the kids to do and stay entertained. Off-site resorts can be awesome. And I must say, just your mentioning of eating a meal while sitting on a bed was enough for me to be THANKFUL for my timeshare. I also eat at the kitchen breakfast bar or a diningroom table. And staying a week in a 3bed/3bath resort for nearly the same cost of a week in a disney value unit is NO comparison. We are going back in July (29 days from today). We plan to go visit WH as it may be an option for next year. Thanks again for a great post. :goodvibes

Here's what we did as a solution to the one-car issue. Those that wanted to leave and go back to the house left with the rental car. Those that wanted to stay took the Disney Transportation bus to the Animal Kingdom Lodge when they were done and then called for a ride from those with the rental car. The AKL is only 7 minutes tops from Windsor Hills, including the stoplight at 192.

Picking people up from a resort is MUCH easier than from a park, IMHO.

These boards were very instrumental in our decision. Learning about the back way to AK, and getting on the monorail to the CR at the end of the day instead of the Transportation Center, and Mousesavers and Undercover Tourist for discounted tix...etc.

I wanted to say one more thing, as if I haven't said enough. Given the decor of the townhome we chose (classy Disney) and atmosphere at the WH pool and playground, the attentiveness of the staff, our kids didn't know they weren't at a Disney resort. The physical transition was seamless.

What is the back way from WH to AK? I may have missed that one. We are staying in the 4-bedroom/4-bath from Romancing the Mouse in WH next June. For GS he can't wait to get in the Indiana Jones themed bedroom. DS can't wait for the private pool. I think we may never go back to staying onsite. Previously we had always stayed at FW with our camper, but at $100/night now it's just not worth the cost.

It's a short cut on Sherbert road. Easy to find and takes you right to Disney property without the hassle of 192!

Great thread to read as we get ready to leave for Windsor Hills on Saturday!
