Help me feel good about staying offsite!

After reading about all this I want to stay off-site. We have been to Disney 3 times in 3 years and always stayed on-site.

Disney World - 12 days 2007
Disney World - 17 days 2008
Disney Land - 20 days 2009

This year my kids want to go to US (Harry Potter) and DW. I thought we would go to

US park to park - 4 days
DS - 2 days

So, where would you stay?
Is 4 days long enough to do US with 2 huge HP fans?

We want a private pool. Please send me your recomendations.

TY!

Romancing the Mouse in Windsor Hills has a 40% discount if you stay Saturday to Saturday. That's what we are doing. 4 bed/bath with private pool and whirlpool.

Food. When you're at the park, everyone eats the same things. At the Caribbean, we found that the resort food was about the same thing as in the parks. However, staying off-site, we ate a familar restaurants - Olive Garden, Friday's - and even some fast food. With sensory overload that Disney provides, it was nice for the kids to decompress doing things they would do at home.

The irony is that I'd pay more for what I got at Windsor Hills...a lot more. But I paid less...a lot less. Go figure.

One of the things that always disappoints within Disney is the food. Lets face it they are NOT restaurateurs. Leave that to those that do it well as their livelihood. Staying off site you are saving cash - often a lot of cash - and you'll save more for far better choices and quality of food away from the parks. Plus you aren't wasting valuable park time waiting in restaurant lines or eating - you can enjoy more of what THEY do best - the parks - and have a much more enjoyable meal outside the world.

You would have to work at it to spend as much to stay off site as on and what you get in room size and features will almost always be lower cost and often better quality off site. It is a very big win and the few added costs such as a rental car and the parking are tiny and having a car adds to the enjoyment of a trip as you aren't tied to the often frustrating Disney transportation (but you do have it - free - if you want to use it). Again , a win all around.

We have done both to be cerrtain that somehow we weren't missing something "magical" by not actually staying inside the gates. The only magic was how much more we willingly gave them for accommodations that were clearly not up to the standards in size, quality and features we expected & got off site. So never again for us on site. Just the lack of television stations alone - a stupid little thing - is one of many irratations that make you ask "Why am I paying more to be dissatisfied on site?". There is no good answer to that except don't do it.

Totally agree with the TV thing. Most of the cable channels they advertise as having "cable TV" or Disney infomercials. GS had, not only the cartoons themselves memorized, but the order in which they were shown...seems they play in a continuous loop.

I noted before that for the price rooms at Disney are far below industry standard..not even a coffeemaker in value rooms, but there are some who really get bent out of shape when you even think about off-site.

We can't wait for WH...just seems like it's a win-win all around and we will never stay on site again.

When we contemplated our first trip, everyone we talked to said we should stay on-site for the true Disney experience. When I argued that the places I saw on the internet looked bigger than those at the resorts, the common reply was, "You're hardly ever in your room."

5 minutes into my stay at the Caribbean, I understood why - your room is an uncomfortable box. It was of less quality than any Holiday Inn Express I use on business - and now I had my wife and son with me.

But as I said in another thread, everything depends on your specific traveling party. Our vacation was an escape from the hustle of work, school, sports, church - to connect with each other. So I chose the townhome. The physical superiority is without question, but it is what that space provided that counted for us.

Use your imagination about all the things you can do when you have a living room with sofas, a dining room that seats 6, a full kitchen with full size appliances, plasma TV with DVD and PlayStation - then imagine doing any of it in a 314 square foot hotel room.

Too soon my kids will want to go from rope drop to late night extra magic hours, everyday, and every meal will be in some sort of restaurant. That's when I might be back on-site. But until that dreaded day, I'm taking late night dips in the pool and a fully stocked kitchen!

I agree with Dayton. When our boys are old enough to enjoy EMH and mature enough to fall asleep in a crowded hotel room, we will do on-site. Right now, it would exhaust them. They really can't settle down unless they are in a quiet room, separated from us.

I agree that the rooms didn't dazzle us - we checked out the Poly and Contemporary - but it would be an ok trade for location in the future.

We want to be energized and well rested touring the parks, so off-site is what we have done both trips. We loved it last time at Worldquest and are looking forward to Windsor Hills this Saturday.:cool1:

Especially the washer/dryer in this heat!

I think this question depends on the personality of your own family. We're a family of 4 (dad, mom, boys - 8 and 4) and were travelling with my wife's parents. We flew in, preferred to stay together, and preferred to have a van in case we wanted to do some other things. Because of the age of our boys, Extra Magic Hours were not on our wish list.

Having stayed at the Caribbean before, I compared 2 moderate rooms to Windsor Hills and found there simply was no comparison, on paper.

We rented a 3 BR townhome. Wife and I had king BR, 2 young sons shared a professionally decorated Mickey BR with twin beds, and wife's parents had queen BR on main floor...all ensuite. Lining room, dining room, breakfast bar, full kitchen, patio and splash pool, full size washer dryer.

With van rental, parking and gas, and eating whenever/wherever we wanted, we spent about $1,500 less than we would have spent for 2 moderate rooms on-site...and getting an on-site suite was even worse.

The boys having their own room was huge at night and in the morning. At night we (the adults) could sit in the living room, have a beverage, watch TV and talk, surf the 'net for attractions we hadn't thought of, all without waking the boys. (This paid off directly when we discovered that the shuttle was scheduled for a rare night launch while we were ther. We simply adjusted the schedule and my kids got to see something they might not see again.)

At the CR, even washing your hands in the middle of the night might wake someone.

In the morning, everyone got up at their own time. And one child getting up and going downstairs to have breakfast with grandma and grandpa didn't wake the other. They had choices for breakfast - cereal and fruit, frozen waffles ('cause you have a toaster), eggs ('cause you have a stove, pan, spatula and plates), etc. And nobody ever ate anything sitting on a bed.

At the Caribbean, we kept some fruit in our room but usually I walked across the resort to the food court to bring stuff back.

Full kitchen and Publix nearby allowed us to stock a variety of stuff for those times we just wanted a snack or sandwich.

The laundry was nice because we packed way less clothing, and there is not much I look forward to less than putting on cold, damp trunks that didn't dry in my room while I was at the park. This allowed us to check the kids' car seats on the flight without paying for extra bags. To be fair, at CR the coin laundry was close to our room but someone had to attend to it.

Driving to and from parks, parking, all were a breeze. We loaded up just outside our front door (about 3 feet away). At the parks we had to walk a little farther than if we were on the bus, and same was true at end of day. But once the kids were seated in the van, they could sleep until we got to our front door.

At the Caribbean, we walked a lot farther to catch the bus in the morning, waited for the bus going to the correct park, then waited at other stops. At the end of the day, someone would usually give up a seat for my wife and our son. (Thanks to the many of you who did so!) But back at the Caribbean, it was a repeat of the morning. Stopping at numerous stops before getting to ours, then hiking across a walmart sized parking lot to our room. No question about it, from door to gate and back took much less time by van than bus.

And finally, the grounds. Windsor Hills is an immaculate gated community and our townhome was clean, fresh and updated. And our owner was a phone call away. We were fortunate to be just across from the main pool and rec room, and with dozens of happy, spashing kids, I don't know how you do much better. Slides, shooting fountains, and did I mention, lots of kids? If we didn't want to go to the main pool, we had our own screened in spash pool. Used it every day.

Each preceived advantage to staying offsite can be mitigated, but it seems one be hard-pressed to mitigate the totality. I'm sure someday the kids will want the Extra Magic Hours so we'll be back on (maybe for a split).

The irony is that I'd pay more for what I got at Windsor Hills...a lot more. But I paid less...a lot less. Go figure.

You hit the nail on the head! We have stayed at all the moderates, stayed at WH this last trip and will stay there from now on. Driving and parking was MUCH easier than using the Disney buses, especially with two small kids in tow. I found taking breaks EASIER than when we were onsite. I was also worried about losing the "magic." But, it was so much more relaxing having a "home base" that I really didn't miss being onsite. Especially as we walked by the looooong bus lines at the end of the night and got right in our car!

I would not stay offsite if it was just another hotel. But a townhouse/condo/villa- definitely!

Yeah, b/w a resort with buses or offsite, that was a no-brainer for us. I remember seeing those lines, too, as we whooshed out of the parks for our break. I personally prefer to skip that with two hot, tired little kids.

But I *would* be interested in a monorail resort when the boys are older. That's why we looked at the rooms at the Poly and Contemp. last time we were there. Clean, but not impressive otherwise. But how fun and convenient to be right on the monorail line!

Our first two Disney trips, we stayed onsite. The last two we have stayed offsite. For the cost difference, the relaxation factor and the space factor, offsite is so worth it.

We are going at Christmas. Even if Disney offers a free dining deal, we have decided we will stay offsite again. If there were free dining this December, the cost for our family of five would be neutral onsite and offsite. I can't see squeezing into one room for a whole week, and even more, I can't see eating every single meal at Disney (even if it free). I much prefer going to Publix or Target and whipping up a few easy meals or going to eat at the convenient chain restaurants close-by. You will love offsite. I would like to stay onsite for the "magic" feel, but as a previous poster said, all of the other things outweigh that. In a house, we could pull right up to the door and get out. To me, it is all around more relaxing.

we used to stay at the expensive Disney hotels but have decided the next time we go we are going to rent a condo like others have done. space and quiet time is very important to us which cannot be achieved in a hotel room.

As a PP stated, there are many Westgates. We owned at Westgate Vacation Villas. The Westgate Town Center is also on the same property. Also as a PP stated, there is a "backway" to AK thru Sherberth Rd. You won't believe how close it is. We use I-4 and have never had a problem. Honestly, I got to MK and the other parks much quicker when I stayed at Westgate and drove my own car vs. Disney transportation. Also, I think the extra room just can't be beat. Being able to put my 2 children to sleep and still stay awake is great. I also enjoy packing lunches to save money. We also use the Super Walmart. We freeze the water bottles the night before so they double for ice as well as keep the water really cold the next day. We also buy pringles in the can as it keeps the chips from crumbling. If it is Westgate Vacation Villas you are staying at, they have swan boats you can use, as well as mini golf. Their pools are great (no slides) but they are still great. You can also take a little train ride around the complex, rent bikes, and they have a movie theatre. They also have a pizza hut on site that will deliver. There are a ton of restaurants on 192...the standard fast food ones, plus there is an Outback Steakhouse and many others. If I may make a suggestion, do not sit thru the timeshare presentation there if you can get away with it, unless you want to purchase. It is 3 hours long, no matter what they tell you and is a very hard sell. Even though we own, they try to get us to sit through it every year. All in all, it is a fabulous place though. Let me know if you have other questions and I would be happy to help.

we are staying in a 2 bedroom condo @ westgate vacation villas in october can you tell me anything about the resort itself - i stayed at towers in 2001 so any info you can provide would be great - thanks

Sure...I would be happy to. It is a very large resort. Personally, I think the best area is PPP. See if there is a timeshare avail. at that location. There is a pool right behind that building and the swan boats, mini golf is just a very small walk away. One note is the villas do not have an elevator. We always requested a ground floor room so we could walk right out the verandah and to the pool. I didn't like the idea of carrying a sleeping child up 3 flights of stairs either. As I mentioned, their sales pitch is very high pressure. Are you staying there as part of agreeing to listen to it? They also have tennis if you like that. The area just can't be beat IMHO. There is so much around there. If you have any other specific questions please don't hesitate to ask. We have probably stayed there about 10 times total.

we are staying as a trade thru II - do you know how i would go about putting in a request for that section and for a first floor villa or is this something i need to wait until we arrive to do? i dont think i want to carry luggage upstairs since this is a girls only trip and we are driving so we will have alot more stuff...thanks for all the help

Only place we stay is on site (coronado springs) The resort is the best we feel for food, activity and price. It has it all. early entry into parks,laser/fireworks at night, fast return from parks as theres no ticket / transportation center. Love the place ! :thumbsup2

....stay onsite,the disney resort way:thumbsup2

Here's what we did as a solution to the one-car issue. Those that wanted to leave and go back to the house left with the rental car. Those that wanted to stay took the Disney Transportation bus to the Animal Kingdom Lodge when they were done and then called for a ride from those with the rental car. The AKL is only 7 minutes tops from Windsor Hills, including the stoplight at 192.

Picking people up from a resort is MUCH easier than from a park, IMHO.

Now that is a good idea--wish I thought of that when we were at WH. Perfect if you're at a WDW park :thumbsup2

You can call the resort directly and see if they will note it on your reservation or ask when you check in. When you go into the Villas the buldings on the left are the older section. The ones on the right are the newer section and is connected to the Town Center. They will probably get you to make an appt to discuss the condition of your unit prior to checking out since you traded in. That is slang for; "come and hear our 3 hour presentation." Again, since you traded in this is not required and don't let them tell you differently. It really is a great place though.
