My family and I went to WDW last September, and had a blast. DH and I have been talking about what kind of vacation we want to do this year, and decided to do something cheap. But lately, I've been getting that Disney bug, and I really, really want to go back. We would go mid-May, to avoid the heat and crowds of summer. Part of my reasoning is that my YDS will be 3 in July, so we could get one more free ticket out of him. So, I am trying to do this on the super cheap, and I need to get my plans all laid out before I try to convince DH (who will be very hard to convince!). I'm looking for been there, done that advice from other cheapies.

We would drive from Indy, stopping overnight somewhere (Macon, GA maybe?). So that hotel cost+gas both ways... Then we need a super cheap place to stay. Like cheaper than the values. I know there are tons of dirt cheap places around Orlando, but does anyone know of a good place that's cheap and has good shuttle service to the parks (to avoid paying parking there)? Any ideas on eating on the cheap? We could do the GAD promo and apply that towards a 4 day ticket. We have family in Tampa, so I'm thinking maybe we could combine 4 days at the parks with a few days at the beach.

I realize this is tons of rambling. I guess I'm just looking for any ideas, tips, advice anyone has on how to do this cheaply, and esp. hotel ideas. Thanks!

It was awesome! Well it wasn't cheap as much as it was 8 days for same or less than shorter vacations there...
---------------------------
We were there 8 days and 7 nights for $2678 TOTAL FAMILY OF 5 kids 10,8,6
I planned $2500 so not bad at all!!

INCLUDING EVERY LAST THING

...from Tour Guide Mike + Touring Plans memberships; the iron-ons we bought for the t-shirts I made; all gas and food to and from INDY; all souvenirs; parking; PHOTOPASS preorder [using 15% off so $85], all dining while there [on and offsite] and:

$1064 Tix 7 day base for 3 A and 2 C

$450 Windsor Hills Condo

$237 VIP Pet boarding [OUCH]
-----------------------

We drove straight through both ways and had nice long stops in cool towns....

Here are ideas of places to stop....

FABulous vacation...we went to Anna Maria Island for the next week and spent about $1500 total! About $4100 total for 2 weeks.

Enjoy.

Here's my blog that has pics of Windsor Hills and budget dining.

And you don't have 3 kids to buy tix and food for so that will save money...if you don't have the dog to board and photopass, etc. even more savings!

My only comment is have you ever stayed offsite? Are you willing to deal with hourly shuttles, much different from Disney transportation.

Good luck planning your getaway :thumbsup2

Where did you stay at in Anna Maria Island?

We just did a quick budget trip in January. I booked a room from a deal on Travelzoo, and I think I paid $29 a night. We were about 10 minutes from the World, and transportation was really not a big deal since we had our car. We packed a picnic lunch for our girls everyday (uncrustables, goldfish, string cheese, fresh fruit and drinks). DH and I also packed 2 soft drinks for us, as well as some snacks. We ate CS and sometimes we split a meal. One day, we did a very late brunch at 1900 Park Fare, and then we had an early dinner that day.

I don't have numbers, but it was a cheap trip and a perfect fix!

During the time you are wanting to go, your room cost at a value would be $68 during the week and $78 on the weekends using the discounts that are now available. If you take off the $13 parking fees, you might be better off staying in a value if you don't find a room cheaper than that. I would also suggest carrying snacks. If you drink soda's bring them to the room too! I wouldn't do the park hoppers unless you really need them. Many of the counter service meals you could share since they are so big. Bring a water bottle and fill it at the water fountains.

Kissimmee has lots of cheap 2 star hotels for 25-40 bucks a night.

You have to decide if the "not so frequent" free shuttle is worth saving the parking fee.

Remember that if you are getting a cheap place offsite the additional fee to park at the theme parks still probably won't bring you up to the cost of the values. It is so much more convenient to take your own vehicle and come and go whenever you please vs. having to adhere to a hotel shuttle schedule. Check Skyauction...there is usually some good condo (timeshare condos, but you don't have to do the presentations) availability in May and some great prices. Good luck! :)

2 adults, no children. We stayed at the Four Points Sheraton for $22/night. Drove down, about $40 each way for gas. Bought our meals at Publix, less than $10/day. Free tickets to WDW by attending a timeshare presentation. Free Pirates Adventure dinner theatre by attending a timeshare presentation. Fish and chips one night at Cookes of Dublin, that was our big night dinner out. Less than $300 for a week.

Bookit.com has been offering the Comfort Inn in LBV for $39 a night. They've just re-done the rooms and they look really nice. Not sure about the bus service to the parks from there but, at that rate, even w/the parking fee at the parks you come out better than the rates onsite at a value. And the CI rooms have a fridge, microwave, and coffee maker - none of which you get in a value room. You should check out the thread on this hotel over on the Orlando Hotels and Attractions forum.

Another way to save some money is get a backpack cooler (we found a nice one at Target) and take drinks and snacks into the parks with you. Not only does this save money, it's a big time-saver too. It's really nice to be able to pull out a drink or snack just anywhere instead of having to stand in line for it. We packed cheese, grapes, strawberries, crackers, Pringles, bottled water and the little individual packets of lemonade mix. We refilled our water bottles at the fountains for free and saved a bunch, just on that one thing.

To find cheap eats in the parks, check out the menus here on the Dis or at allearsnet.com. There are lots of good counter service places and sharing meals is definitely a possibility cause the portions are usually so large. You can also have them leave the sides off of combo meals if it's something you don't really want - they will charge a little less. You can also get ice water to drink for free.

Would your husband be willing to go to a timeshare presentation? If so there are some on ebay that include tickets and hotel or condo. You can also get a one day ticket with GAD.

Don't forget that if you book a value right now - you could get a $300 Disney Gift card. I priced a value and with that deal 5 nights including 5 day tickets would be $1300 with the $300 gift card that you could use towards food.

I think I stayed at Serlago for about $24 per night. Look in the area around Old Town for some super-cheap 2 star places. Many have free (but slow and not frequent) but free shuttles. Personally I'd rather pay the $14 a day and get in and out on my own clock, but if you need to save every penny it is a slow option. Old Town itself is a cheap diversion that is actually fun in the traveling fair sort of way. Lots of cheap eats down there, from fast food with real fast food prices, pizza places, and "nicer" places like Bob Evans and Uno and Red Lobster. WalMart is an easy drive from there for cheap eats and cheap stuff.

I always hear about these prices but never seem to land them. I don't know what the secret is.

Where did you secure that rate?!! That's an awesome price for ANY hotel!!

Priceline. If you sign up for the site you should check your profile frequently
because they like to throw in bonuses. Sign in, go to My Profile and look in My Rewards We got the $22 rate with a $10/day credit. We just rented a minivan for our next trip with a $5/day reward so we got it for $31/day with unlimited mileage. Normally it's just my wife and myself driving down but her daughter, SIL and 2 grandkids will be traveling with us this time so she wanted them all in one vehicle.

We have also won the Radisson in Celebration for $21/day but their $11.50/day resort fee took the fun out of winning it :(

WOW, I've done priceline for years now and never realized there was any bonus stuff offered!

Did you do a name your price for that rate, or was it just the reg priceline rate with the bonus applied?

I am always wary of the NYP option in Orlando because there are sooooo many nasty places you could get!! And as you mentioned, you can get slammed with resort fees from too many properties!

Wow, thanks everyone for all the replies! Yep, when I say "budget," I truly mean BUDGET. When we went in September, our 7 day trip was $1300 (not including travel) and we had free dining. I know that if I want to convince him to go, it has to be way cheaper than even that, which I know is cheap by WDW standards. I found a 2.5 star hotel on Hotwire for $22 a night with 75% favorable customer feedback. We are not picky at all on hotels, so I bet we'd be happy with that. I know my DH and I would do the GAD promo and apply it to a multi-day pass, so we'd save, but unfortunately ODS is 5, so too little to GAD as well. I think we would probably bring a cooler and have stuff to make sandwiches, etc. to bring for lunch, as well as eat breakfast in the room. Then we'd just have one meal to buy each day. Running the numbers, I think we could do 4day tickets for around $500 for all of us (after the GAD discount), room at the cheap hotel would be $160 for 5 nights. Travel there and back would be around $300 (gas and hotel each way). And then some food ($120=$30/day?-my kids are super light eaters and it'd just be one meal, plus a treat here and there). Parking at the parks $50 for 4 days. Total would be around $1100. Can I get it cheaper than that?

Oh, and more info on the timeshare thing please. I don't know that we'd mind a presentation if it meant free tickets. But we'd have a 5 and 2 year old with us, so would that even be an option?

Priceline bonuses aren't mentioned much, they are one of the hidden gems you have to dig for.

Did you do a name your price for that rate, or was it just the reg priceline rate with the bonus applied?

Let's say you have a $10/day bonus for up to 5 days, with a 3 day minimum. You bid $20/day for 5 days on a 3 star. Priceline adds the bonus and makes your bid $30/day. Let's say instead that you want to stay for 10 days. You bid $20/day again. Priceline divides the max bonus by the number of days and makes the bid $25/day. Something to consider:

Le's say you wanted to spend 3 days close to Universal and 3 days close to WDW. You have your $50 bonus, $10/day for 5 days. You bid $20/day on the Universal hotel. Priceline adds in the bonus and makes it $30. You win  Now you go to bid on your other 3 days. You bid $20. Priceline adds nothing. You have one chance to use your bonus so pay attention to the details and maximize what they give you.
I am always wary of the NYP option in Orlando because there are sooooo many nasty places you could get!! And as you mentioned, you can get slammed with resort fees from too many properties!

If you go to sites like betterbidding and biddingfortravel you can usually get an idea of what hotels are awarding winning bids. You can also get a list of hotels in your star range and research them. Between these 2 strategies you can get a decent idea of where you will end up. If you also are on a budget, especially one trying to get off as cheaply as possible, go in with the attitude that you are looking for a comfortable, safe to sleep and you can be pleasantly surprised when you get something that exceeds your expectations. I've been using Priceline as long as there's been a Priceline and I can say that I've never had a room that would have made me regret bidding on it. Something like a resort fee is an annoyance but it still only made the room $33/day.

Here is a little tip you can use as an insurance policy if you are the skittish type. I've never had this not work though theoretically it's possible at a super busy time. Let's say you wanted to stay in Orlando for a week but you're nervous about being stuck in a dump for that amount of time. Bid for 2 or 3 days. When you win, Priceline will tell you the name of the hotel and offer to extend your stay at the same rate.

Now you have a name, a location and a rate. Open another window in your browser and check out the hotel. Read the reviews. Call the front desk and ask if they have a resort fee or charge for parking. Satisfy yourself that it's where you won't mind staying. If it isn't you only have it for 2 days and can look for something else. If you like it then extend your stay at the same rate. It will actually cost you a couple of dollars more because they will charge you a 2nd booking fee but it's worth it for the peace of mind.

Bring your own treats, don't buy anything at the parks. Look at local yard sales or thrift shops for souvenirs, your kids won't know the difference. Do your research now on your hotel and the area around it. Does it have a fridge? If it doesn't does it have an ice machine? Between those 2 you can store food. Find out what supermarkets are in the area (Publix and WalMart Supercenters are the dominant markets in the area though there is also Winn Dixie and other smaller ones). Look through the sales circulars so you can plan your meals in advance. If you are all light eaters one rotisserie chicken and a couple of sides can be a main meal with maybe even some leftovers to nibble on later. Rotisserie chickens are on sale this week for $4 at our local market, look for sales like that.

If you have the means to post here for information you also have the means to look and see what's on sale at the Orlando markets the week you go. Plan accordingly. Look and see what's on sale at home now. Think in terms of easy meals and snacks you can transport down, especially stuff that doesn't need to be refrigerated. Even stuff you can freeze for later. Today my wife bought orange juice for $1.25 a gallon container. It went into the freezer. March 5th when we drive down it will be in the car and starting to thaw out by the time we get to Orlando. Nice cheap healthy drinks. Plan, plan, plan, look at every bargain in terms of how it can be used for your vacation. Money you save now is money you don't have to spend later.

See if your hotel has a free or cheap shuttle and ask yourselves if the inconvenience is worth $14/day to you.
Oh, and more info on the timeshare thing please. I don't know that we'd mind a presentation if it meant free tickets. But we'd have a 5 and 2 year old with us, so would that even be an option?
The resorts all have daycare centers and will keep the kids entertained while you tour.

Instead of going to all 4 parks, would you be willing to go to only one park and add the Water Park Fun & More option? If you did this, tickets would only cost you about $225, after the GAD tix for the adults.

You could do this...
Day 1 Disney Park of your choice
Day 2 Water Park
Day 3 Character breakfast (if you're willing to pay for this--make it "brunch" so you don't have to pay for another meal), then resort hop, Downtown Disney or another free activity
Day 4 Water Park or DisneyQuest (DQ is more for older kids, but there are some things young kids can do there.)
