Gift idea for my dad to put in his new car. I'd like to keep it below $500, but if you get a significantly better product for a little more, I'd do it. I can't do anything that has a monthly fee. The names I keep hearing are Magellan, Tom Tom and Garmin but I don't know the differences. TIA!

I am also in the market for a GPS, but hand-held I think. Just bumping this up for both of us! :Pinkbounc

We have the Magellen Meridian and love it. It is so easy to use I can even use it! We have the one with a color screen and that works better because you can tell what is a road vs a river. I think DH bought an update on the mapping software, it didn't come with much, but I think none of them do.

DH has a Garmin hand held...we use it for geocaching.
It works for us.
I believe this is the model

He originally wanted the color model...but got screwed over by someone on eBay...so he ended up with the one above. (might get him one for christmas. heheh)

The above model is pretty easy to use...heck, I can figure it out! But the color screen WOULD make it easier to read sometimes.

Thanks to both, but I think he wants one that's more for the car. Those both look like handhelds (am I right?).
