My DS brought home a math problem and we've been wracking our brains trying to figure it out and not getting anywhere. Can any of you help? DS posted it on the Teen Board. Here's the link:

Math Problem

Thanks in advance for your help!

How is this:

T=1
R=7
I=4
E=6
D=5
V=9

17465
+57496
_______
74951

I posted my answer over there. I was thinking I shouldn't help him cheat, but my competitive nature wouldn't let me pass on the chance of answering first.

Here's a hint as to how to get started. I noticed the patterns of I+I=V and E+V=E. Those make this a simple problem.

I started with E+V=E. It may look as simple as V=0 at first, but you have to remember that D+E could be >9, which would carry the one, making the equation now E+V+1=E. THEN you have to realize that E+V could = a 2-digit #, making it E+V=E+10 or E+V+1=E+10. (I think. Now I'm confusing myself when I have to put it into writing.)

So I solved for V in each of those equations and saw which one worked.

You're better at explaining than I am! I did the same thing as you, I noticed the E+V=E and assumed V was either 0 or 9 and just worked from there. I love math and doing math problems, and everyone says I should be a tutor, but I am horrible at explaining things!

Thanks so much! You guys are great; I, too, tried working it with V=0, and then DH said it could be >9 and carrying, and I just couldn't figure it out. I told DS the folks on the DIS could help him, and I was right!
