Help Lice!!! We leave for Disney tomorrow!!

Anybody? This is so gross I'm hoping they are all gone..........my poor little girl. We wash her hair every day so this is proof clean people can get it.

From what
I have read they actually prefer clean hair. Its dirty hair they dont like.

A few months ago I posted about lice where I worked (I work in early childcare). Three children had them. One of them it only took one treatment and a comb through. The mother kept her child home two days. One child had to have two treatments before she was rid of them. The one who's mother called to say her child had lice, which is when we did a head check and discovered the first two kids I mentioned, said it took a full week for her child to be free of nits and live lice.

So, that being said, just one treatment of RID is not always enough. Nor is just a one hour of a comb through always enough. You were lucky that in your child's case it was enough.

All it could take is one or two lice to cause an infestation.

No, one treatment of RID is not always enough to rid that child of lice, but it is enough to kill enough live lice that the kids will probably not be contagious for 10 days until missed eggs would hatch at which time a second treatment should be done. And the second treatmetn should only be done if there is evidence upon a comb through that lice are still there.

Wow, this thread goes to show what kind of people we have in this world. I'm sure the OP is not a bad person (in general), but if you go on this vacation without serious precautions imo, that is really irresponsible. Is it the OP's or her daughters’ fault that she has head lice - NO. Is it the OP's fault if its spread on the airplane, the Disney bus, a rental car, the monorail, a Disney restaurant, a theme park ride, the hotel room - YES it is! I hope the OP tells mousekeeping so that room can be properly cleaned. What hotel and room are staying in? OMG – this whole thread is making me itch!

Nope, not always. Some have become resistant.

Just a question. Did you get the impression that the OP was informed and totally understood what needed to be done? I didn't. I don't think she knew the difference between live lice and nits were.

Key word being probably, but not defiantly?

but the mother said she did RID and a comb through. They cant spread from head to head unless they are alive. The kid is clear. You all have no clue what you are talking about obviously. Even in the unlikey event that there was one live louse on the kid, she would have to touch her head to another persons head for them to get it. And even then if there is only one or two lice it would be unlikely for them to get it since she is not infested.

I'll admit I've never had to deal with lice and chances are I never will. However, I've had several students deal with it. None were cured with one treatment.

The OP said her daughter had nits that looked like dirt in her hair. Someone posted that the darker the nits are, the closer they are to hatching. It's very possible the child will have live lice within the next few days.

The mother combed through 1 time count them 1 time there is no way that would rid her of the nits. And I would love to have you show me how to comb through a girls long hair in 1 hour and be nit free. I would give you a thousand dollars to show me that technique because every case I have known about takes hours and hours to get every one of them . The girl also according to her Mom definitely had nits when they left. and like I said before the ones laid last week will be hatching tomorrow oh joy just in time for the seats at HISTA. Or the airplane ride home.

Or the Stitch Ride or Sounds Dangerous. Do they clean those head phones between shows???:headache:

I totally agree, and the thread is making me very itchy too!

Lice actually prefer clean hair to dirty hair, and are more prone to attaching to hair that is not tied back but just hanging down.

Oh my gosh. I'm sorry, but I'm just disgusted these people would still continue on this trip, knowing their child has lice.

I KNOW how time consuming and HARD it is to plan & save for a Disney trip- but to continue this trip was just so inconsiderate and irresponsbile!!!

I had bad lice outbreaks when I was young- it took MONTHS for us to take care of the problem because my hair is so thick, and we were washing our bedding, vacuuming, etc. several days A DAY!! I really can't picture my Mother allowing me to vacation when I had lice, And I'm glad she didn't expose me to other people during that time!

Bed bugs, and now lice...just another thing to be paranoid about during vacation. :rolleyes1 (and with lice- during every day life!)

a good comb through with a nit comb every other night on wet hair for about two weeks probably will do the trick.

The electronic comb didn't work worth beans for us.

My kids were back in school the next day, nit free.

I can't believe the people who think she should cancel her trip. How long should this child be kept out of public anyway? She's not a leper. The chances of her infecting anyone else after a RID treatment and a very thorough combthough with a nit comb are likely pretty dang slim.

A good hour long , comb one section at a time comb through would take care of the nits.

It could be repeated every couple of days to make sure none were missed.

And no, lice can't crawl unless they are on a shaft of hair. I would love to see the scientific information you have suggesting otherwise.

Lice do indeed crawl...My younger sister had them once and I watched one crawl out of her hairbrush and onto the counter....it was crawling on the counter. So it is not scientific but is is an eyewitness account. I was already in my 20's and at the time was a hairdresser. I know all about lice...we had to study it in class. Lice do not jump, so they will not leap from one head to another....but since they can live for 2 days on a surface they can be transferred from one persons head to another.

I think positively nit and lice free is the bare minimum.

The OP wasn't even quite sure what she was looking for and admitted she was finding more. With long hair, it takes hours to be sure you got every single one of them.

I think the parent should be absolutely sure there are not nits or live lice before taking them in public. I do not think that is too much to ask.

If there was an easy solution and it was hard to infest other people, there would be no lice problem.

I have a student who is out every week w/lice. She's treated at her father's house on the weekends but lives w/the mother. Once she goes back to mom, she comes in w/a head full of nits. I see nits in her hair that haven't been combed out but b/c she has no live lice, she's considered clean. When I see those nits, I want to throw up b/c I know it's only a matter of time before they hatch. They're allowed to come back w/nits (which makes no sense if they're only going to hatch!). By the end of the week, she has live lice in her hair and has to be sent home. Every morning, she's checked by the lice lady and as soon as any live lice are spotted she's sent back home again. We've told her mother how to treat her house (vacuum, do the laundry, tie up all toys in baggie and let them sit, etc.) but I don't think she's doing that! Thankfully, I don't use headphones in the classroom nor do we have stuffed toys, carpets, etc.

I had to put her graduation cap on her head and put in bobby pins. I was gagging b/c I could see the nits. I didn't touch her hair ... just opened the bobby pins and put them in w/o touching her hair. As soon as I finished, I grabbed the anti-bac hand soap and slathered it up and down my arms. I had the worst heebie-jeebies!!!!!

I have shoulder length hair and have been wearing mine pulled back in a pony tail and sprayed to high heaven b/c I live in fear of bringing home lice!!!
Every day, DS gets a bunch of hair gel in his hair and then a touch of spray. We do the same thing at WDW b/c I'm so paranoid of those things. Yugh!!!!!

That is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard. You are SO underpaid!

yuck!! At my kids school...it's ALWAYS the same family that brings them back! They must not clean their house thoroughly after the kids bring them home. There are 5 kids going to the school. One of them is in my DD's grade level and one is in my DS class. Thank goodness my kids have never come home with them! *knock on wood*

I had to laugh though...the lice lady?? "What do you do for a living?"..."oh, I'm the lice lady"! :rotfl: :lmao:

::yes:: And not doing so is what causes others to get it. Duh!

Doens't anybody do the right thing anymore?

gosh, I need to stay away from this thread. My head itches like crazy now! But I keep coming back! :rotfl:

I'm itchy too...

I see two good solutions for the OP:

1) shave the child's head. Might as well shave the whole family's while at it just to make sure they're gone. NOT a great suggestion, but lice won't beon the head if there's nothing there.

2) Keep at it with the lice treatments. I've heard families complain that up to 5 treatments were nessesary.

Let me tell you, there's nothing like working Walmart stocking the bandaids when a woman comes up VERY close (within an inch) to whisper "where's the lice products?" :scared1: Turn around and the entire family of 5 children are rampaging all over the deparment for the next hour whild she seeks out advice from the pharmacist on which product is best. It was great to see the look on the pharmacist's face when she left though as she had done the head-butting thing to her too, but for longer :rotfl: We were all itchy for the rest of that day.
