Help Lice!!! We leave for Disney tomorrow!!

Lice do not like dirty heads.

DS9 school had it only the girls got it becuase all the boy moms' buzzed their hair. Theyr recommended having the girls wear their hear in ponytails or braids maybe you should do this.

Many people tried the mayo and vinegar rinse and were not all that succesful, many did mention that tree tee oil worked very well. Health food stores carry it or GNC like places.

Also many of the girls wore banadanas that the moms would throw aays as soon as they got home.

Make sure you boil any of her hari clips and such!

Good luck, I feel so bad for you!

we could start a scabies thread if you would really like to itch!

Want to feel totally ucky try undressing a completely drunk out of their mind street person who is covered in lice scabies, filth, urine, and everything else. I used to go home and shower forever! We used to burn their clothes and when they woke up the would want them back! (we did give them new ones but they would get so mad) This is how I KNOW they can crawl!

you don't have to pay extra. No worries...

MIkeeee

I think positively nit and lice free is the bare minimum.

The OP wasn't even quite sure what she was looking for and admitted she was finding more. With long hair, it takes hours to be sure you got every single one of them.

I think the parent should be absolutely sure there are not nits or live lice before taking them in public. I do not think that is too much to ask.

If there was an easy solution and it was hard to infest other people, there would be no lice problem.
---------------------------

As much as I hate to see anyone miss a long-awaited trip to WDW, I have to agree..

When my children were in school, if a child was found to have nits or live lice they were not allowed back in school until 2 days after the child was found to have neither lice nor nits in their hair.. If the nurse found so much as one nit, the child was sent back home again..

I have also never heard of a parent killing all of the live lice - and getting all of the nits out - in one single treatment..

To make matters worse, this particular parent doesn't seem to have any knowledge of head lice, how to treat them, and was even resisting the idea of having her child not wear a hat.. My fear would be that she did not do a thorough job and the child is still walking around with live lice in her hair..

Unfortunatley, there will be plenty of opportunities for others to be exposed to this problem - from the airplane ride to the hotel room to the movie-style seats.. :(

Much as it would kill me, I would have postponed the trip - but of course that is just my opinion..

I feel bad for the little girl, but the mom didn't sound like she knew anything about treating the problem. Since the family was going to WDW, the first thing that should have been done was cut the girls hair. Then her head should be covered completely at all times.

My head has been itching since I started reading this thread. :sad2:

OMG I just finished reading this thread and cannot believe someone would actually go to WDW and stay in a hotel knowing that their child has lice. That is so selfish, and I feel terrible for the next family that stays in that room.

The OP said they would tell housekeeping, but I have my doubts. If she didn't want to cancel her trip, why would she tell them and risk being expelled from the hotel? I cannot imagine WDW would allow someone with lice to stay in their hotel and risk an infestation.

Unbelievable.

If you have long hair you do not have to cut it. I have long hair and I got rid of the lice with a couple of treatments. I did one treatmentm waited several days then did another. I didnt have any signs after the first one but I wanted to be sure they were gone.

I had to put her graduation cap on her head and put in bobby pins. I was gagging b/c I could see the nits.

:crazy2: :crazy2: That's disgusting!

I don't know about the rest of you, but, besides all the things mentioned here about possibly infesting others, the thought of treating lice/nits while at WDW is just not my idea of fun and exciting things to do on vacation. :scared: I can hear it now, "Come on sweetie, we've got to go back to the hotel to comb for nits.":scared: :scared: Yes, that would be one fun vacation. ;) :scared:

I was thinking the same thing Rita, that would be horrible. And then worrying about the rest of the family and checking their heads too.

Ok, so I really need to get this thread out of my mind before our Sept trip. <scratching head as I type> Cause I am not a germaphobe, but thinking about the idea that the people sleeping in the room before me may have had lice....uggghhhh It makes my skin crawl. Please, please...no one is allowed to post any lice threads right before I go, I will be super pissed if I am reminded of this.;)

On a serious note, I agree that I hate to think that anyone should postpone their trip, but man...this is one of those times where I think it is necessary. Especially given the fact that the mother just caught this last night and didn't know much about it. They could all be infested by the time they get back (and other, unsuspecting people too).

I agree, I don't want to cook or pick nits while on vacation.:upsidedow

my4kids, thanks for sharing the headlice.org site...but I found info on there that contradicts what you are saying too.

For instance:

Someone can be treated and still be infested. The ultimate determination that someone is no longer infested can only be accomplished with a thorough manual screening to confirm the complete absence of lice and nits.

Vacuuming is the safest and best way to remove lice or fallen hairs with attached nits from upholstered furniture, rugs, stuffed animals or car seats – wherever someone with head lice may have rested their head.

While rooms will (hopefully) be vaccumed, there are still things like chairs in the room, the bedspread that we know isn't changed after each guest, seats in theaters and fur on characters from when the child hugs them. Those surfaces will not be vaccumed.

Head lice are crawling insects. They cannot hop, jump, or fly.

and from Micrographia.com:

Washing with medicated shampoos and similar offerings is not much use -- unless the medication is left in contact with the lice long enough to kill them. Anything short of this amounts to using sub-lethal dosage to guarantee the evolution of resistant lice.

So unless the entire length of the child's hair had medicated shampoo left in place long enough, it may not have been enough.

I am not looking at it as that this kid is going to infect a bunch of people at WDW, but I do think it is irresponsible to go without knowing for sure that she is louse free. I know my son's school will not allow them back with just one washing with Rid. There was an outbreak in 2 of the kindergarten classrooms this year and each child did have to be inspected by the nurse. Letters went home saying your child must be nit free before returning to school. When they were just saying live louse free and telling parents to continue combing the problem persisted which motivated them to establish a policy of nit free.

It just bugs me that people will travel KNOWING that they have something like this. I know how frustrating it is to cancel because of something like this. We postponed a trip 2 years ago because DS got a bad case of pink eye right before we were to leave. We had to pay something like $600 more for change fees and everything but I knew when we got on the plane two weeks later that DS was all clear. No, lice won't kill my child but I don't want to have to deal with it because the child in the room before us was laying on the bedspread as her parents packed the suitcase to check out 4 hours before my child flops on the same bed to wait for me to get ready to go to the parks after we check in.

Oh and imagine the little dears going into the shops and putting on all the cool hats and things.....
:scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

How about headphones? Don't some places have those?

My dd has had lice and it was a bugger...

Gross, gross, gross.....:scared:

Once seperated from a host lice will die within 24 hours. The eggs will die in about a week.

Here is some info:

Wash all bed linens and clothing that's been recently worn by anyone in your home who's infested in very hot water (130 degrees Fahrenheit, or 54.4 degrees Celsius) then put them in the hot cycle of the dryer for at least 20 minutes.

Dry clean any clothing that isn't machine washable.

Have bed linens, clothing, and stuffed animals and plush toys that can't be washed/ dry-cleaned put in airtight bags for 2 weeks.

Vacuum carpets and any upholstered furniture (in your home or car).

Soak hair-care items like combs, barrettes, hair ties or bands, headbands, and brushes in rubbing alcohol or medicated shampoo for 1 hour. You can also wash them in hot water or just throw them away.
