Help! Just bought at SSR. Did we do the right Thing?

Negative comments also tend to draw more responses than positive, so negative threads tend to assume a life of their own while positive threads die a quiet death.

That is a sadly true statement on the condition of society isn't it :(

Not me! I just spent the last 3 hours calculating the "positivity - negatosity" factors for every post I've ever made here, and I came up with the following results:

83.3434 % Positive
7.2294 % Negative
23.3345 % Confused
11.9834 % Las Vegas-related (wrong forum)
3.14159 % Mmmmmm, pie.

[Jim's right, though - don't worry!]

To be honest, I disagree. It's simply that, when I read a negative comment, I often think of something that I can add to the discussion. When I see a positive comment, I nod, smile and don't think a "me, too" post is necessary. Except when I do. :confused3

HTH!

We love SSR. We stayed there in Nov-Dec. We took a large group-14. Many really enjoyed being so close to DTD. My brother with 2 small kids loved being able to walk over at night go to Lego land etc. We have since stayed at BWV and loved that too. I think each DVC will have its own +s and -s. We're just glad to be part of the DVC family and love always having at least 1 reservation to look forward too. Next vac Disney cruise,SSR and BWV with son,daughter,daughter-in-law and son-in-law!!!!!!!!!!

I will preface my remarks by saying this: I have been a DVC owner since 1997 at OKW and have seen SSR and think it's quite lovely.

That being said, we go through this every time there is a new resort opening. Some people hate it, some people love it. I remember when BCV opened..."oh my God, the CMs at the hotel hate DVCers, they don't want to deal with us" blah, blah, blah.

They opened the first buildings in SSR before the whole resort was done, so for some, staying in what was still partially a construction area may have had a negative impact. For others, it is a stand alone, not connected to a hotel, and they don't like that. There are still others that LOVE the stand alone resort. Some don't like the location because it's a bit distant from the parks, some love the locations because it's close to DTD.

The bottom line is, having seen it, it is a lovely resort, beautifullly decorated and themed, the pool area looked nice, the food court was very nice, the gift shop was well-stocked. If I thought my DH wouldn't strangle me, I might buy an add-on there myself! ;) ;)

There are sharks in the water more than 100 miles away from VB!
Hey Jim, I was one who posted that I read that and saw it on TV. The Today Show and many news stations were carrying this story for several weeks. My uncle actually lives in Sebastian which is 10 min away from Vero and even he was talking to me about it. Actually, it was later updated that those 4-5 foot spinner and black tip sharks were as close as 10 feet from shore too ;)
BUT, for the record, I would never slam Vero Beach resort or tell someone not to go there. I think it's a terrific resort and sharks wouldn't stop me from visiting the resort........maybe just from going in the ocean during that short-lived shark infestation :hyper: , but I've never put down the resort.

Why did you buy SSR? What was appealing to you about it? Did you do your research ahead of time? Did you know about resales?

If you bought SSR because you like the theme, the location, the laid backness, the room decor, the 12 extra years, the lower point structure over BCV/VWL/BWV (preferred) - then you probably didn't make a mistake. There are plenty of people who didn't buy points that were available at BWV/VWL/BCVs and chose SSR when it opened because it appealed to them.

If you did your research ahead of time, if you knew that you didn't have to buy what Disney was selling, if you knew what the other resorts were like, if your choice of SSR was informed, then you probably didn't make a mistake.

hehehe - some of us didn't really do much research at all (other than some numbers crunching that showed me this was a no brainer for our family of vacationers) and SSR is STILL the resort I am so very glad I own. If I had done too much research at first, I would still be paralized and unable to make a decision, yet since we bought into SSR sight unseen, we have already been able to go on a vacation ourselves and take another family with us!

I personally am having a BANG UP time trying to find my own list of negatives about each DVC resort and other WDW hotels. So far....so far I haven't found one single place that I would not go back to in a heartbeat!!! (that includes the All Stars and Pop too) Maybe I am more laid back, but I don't think so. I am cheap though, so the DVC mentality is a hard one for me sometimes. Funny thing though - I am about to call our guide because I just cannot convince myself that the current add-on deal is not a good one for us! :earseek: So maybe I am cheap and crazy at the same time

SSR is fantastic. I suspect it will take us several trips there to discover all the things we really will love about it, but isn't that what we all hope for?

You did good! Your heart will tell you after your trip. :)

First of all I must be what some think of as an "oldtimer" and I could care less about upseting any apple carts. I have not read all the posts, but just want to tell the OP to please don't listen to 99% of what goes on here. Everyone has an opinion and some people just like to shout it from the rooftops. I agree that more people post negative than positive posts, but I am always amused and amazed at what some people have to say about not only DVC resorts, but all the Disney resorts. Every resort has had it's share of bad reviews. Not everyone is going to like every resort. Let me say this again NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO LIKE EVERY RESORT (and I am not even on a rooftop) and THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE. That's why Disney builds so many different types of resorts, to please different people.

Patrenoe, please make up your own mind. Chances are you will love SSR. We bought into DVC before there was even a DVC built. Everyone told us we were crazy, but thank goodness we didn't listen to them. Go and have a wonderful time. If by some wierd chance you don't like it, you can sell or do something about it at that time. Give yourself a chance and go with an opened mind. I've been over there and it is a lovely resort.

Welcome Home!!!!

I am nervous. We have spent a lot of $$ and I have heard so many negatives on this resort. I have longed to be a DVC owner and now that We have finally accomplished this feat I have seen so many boards saying this us such a terrrible resort. What do you think? :moped:

I might be an appropriate person to calm your fears. I have posted negative reviews of SSR based on our stay. First let me start right off by saying the place is in no means horrible. Vacation habits really dictate which of the DVC Resorts work for your family. SSR has many great features.... gym, spa, nice pools, grounds are nice, view of DTD and fireworks at night, close proximity to DTD, etc. The majority of negative posts have centered around the Resort not being to their liking. I really don't remember any posts with any problems specifically. Try this Resort out and see how your family likes it. Try the others as well until you develop a favorite. DVC is a great program whether you like or dislike this specific Resort. Don't worry you did not make a mistake. The flexibility and choices of DVC can't be beat.

Yes, you did the right thing. The contract is great for Disney with the extra 12 years. We enjoy SSR a lot. Just trade out at 7 months to a different resort. You are now part of the DVC.

I would say that it would be only be a mistake if you think you will ahve to sell your contract. 500 points is a large contract and traditionally, OKW the larger resort, has not been sold at resale as high as BCV and VWL. The offsite resorts also don't do as well at resale. Depending on what you paid per point and when and if you have to sell, it might be harder to sell a large SSR contract than a small BCV, BWV or VWL contract. THis will change though as we get closer to 2042.

It might also be harder to rent your points for market value because of the ultimate size of SSR. Many people renting points want to stay near MK or Epcot.

It is a beautiful resort and there are many positives to the resort and the SSR contract, especially the extra 12 years. As long as you intend to use the points yourself and do not plan to sell the contract in the near future, I don't believe you made a mistake.

You don't have to stay at SSR. I don't even think of it as "I own SSR, or I own OKW." You can stay wherever you want.

Thanks everyone for all the wonderful and supportive advice. We think we'll really love "going Home". Now to start all the planning..... :moped:

We did break down the points so the contract would not be so large. After saying that..We plan on willing our two contracts to our neice and nephew. Yes, we are older. I am over 50 and dh is 43. We did not buy into DVC for renting or resale purposes but for us and our family to enjoy now and in the future. :umbrella:
