I received a call this morning asking to speak to my husband. I asked who was calling and and in regards to what , since he had already left for work. She replied that she was calling from Arizona about his drivers license. I asked what about his drivers license since we don't even live in AZ and said she could only give that information to him. I explained that I was his wife and she started getting rude and said she wasn't telling me anything. Now in the background I could hear numerous other people talking. It had to be coming from some kind of call center. I then just hung up the phone. I left the house for a few hours and when I got home there was a message from another person saying in a very stern voice that it was" in his best interest" to call them back. They left a 1800 # and started to give a reference # but trails off at the end so you can't even hear the number. we are on the do not call list for telemarketers so I am wondering how they got this number. Has anyone heard of something like this?

I have not heard of anything like this...but I am interested to find out if anyone else has. Calling for him is one thing...but in regards to his license???? Got me confused....sorry that I am not of any help...

I've never heard of anything like that. I would start by googling the 1-800 number and see if that helps (a lot of time doing that will show if its a scam).

I tried my yahoo search engine and nothing is coming up. The phone number was 1800 348 7243. Any other ideas?

I would check the 800# on google too. Most places if it deals with "private" information will not give out the info to the spouse. Believe it or not that's what makes me think this might be a legit call. Notice I said might. It could b someone witha similar name and the database kicked out your DH's number because it's a computer and they do make mistakes. I know thsi doesn't help much but I would google then call the 800# to see what they have to say.

Sorry I just googled the # you listed and it stated it was a collection agancy.

my first thought is that it is a collection agency probably trying to track down somebody with a name similar to your husband's.

Sometimes they just get the phone directories and start dialing.

definately a collection agency - this is what I find

We don't have any financial problems so I don't know why they would be calling us. I guess I will wait and see if they call again. My husband is a lawyer, so if they call again maybe I will threaten "them" with a lawsuit! Ha Ha

Just because you currently don't have any outstanding debts doesn't mean that your DH doesn't have an old loan that was never recorded as paid off (even if it was). Has he pulled his credit report recently? Perhaps an old car or student loan that had changed owners one too many times which is typically the case when final payments aren't marked paid.

Glad to hear he's a lawyer - no need to educate the man on how not to give out info (which I find men are more likely to do than women):rotfl:

My feeling is all ligit calls give you all the information you need.
No, with the privacy laws in place in MA (vary according to state) they can't give out the information if your name isn't on the contract.

Not with the new privacy act - no one gives out too much info. I know some companies/banks/utilities will only talk to DH if the account is in his name. It can be very frustrating.

Given the situation I would probably run a credit check also. One of my co-workers received a call from a collection agency and it turned out someone opened a cell phone account in his name several years ago and they were coming after him. He was able to work it out but it was a headache.

He is out of town on business so I will have to have him call because this is worrying me that someone may have used his name or something. We are planning to buy a new house this summer and I don't want my credit score messed up. when we got married and went to buy our first house we found out that his mother had opened a credit card in his name that came to her house while he was off at college. You can imagine that wasn't a pleasant issue to face after just getting married. I'm worried she has done it again! wish me luck, because this will be the final straw if she has! thanks everyone for all of your help.

I think its good to take care of, but don't lose sleep.

It could be as simple as a wrong name similar to your husband's name. We had a collection agency calling for someone with a similar (not the same - our last name is rare) last name and when I spoke with them directly, they took our number off the list and I didn't hear from them again.

add: I would, however, pull your 'free' copy of your credit report sooner rather than later. Also gives you an excuse to clean up any old credit cards, correct any mistakes now, etc. if you will be buying a new house.

I heard about a scam that uses "verifying info" re a driver's license as a way to get info for identity theft. Huge scam right now.

You question the license, they say let me verify some info. Viola, you start giving them information they need. You were smart to question. I guess they're getting a lot of people.

I also heard about a scam with running info off of a drivers license. Considering this looks like a legit business I would think either 1) there is old debt, 2) there is someone who may have used his info, mother or otherwise, or 3) since he is an atty it could be possible that they are trying to sell him their services. If you're interested they also have a website www dot 1fam dot com. Who knows?! Keep us updated though in case it's a scam. Thanks and best of luck!

I'm sure this doesn't need to be said but sometimes when you get bombarded with questions it's difficult to think straight BUT do not give out any information to this person. I would ask for a name of a supervisor, DIRECT phone number and the name of the company that is calling.

I would also tell that person that AS SOON as I hang up with you I am calling to verify said name and phone number and that you will be contacting the authorities if it doesn't get verified to your satisfaction.

Good Luck ~

Another suggestion--perhaps you or your dh could contact the drivers license dept in your state (whatever its called) and see if there's some problem with your dl?

I had something weird like that happen about a year ago--someone claimed to be calling from the bank, demanded to speak to dh only, wouldn't leave a number, caller ID said blocked call. Then she called back in about an hour, said she had "cleared it with her supervisor to speak with me, the spouse. The proceeded to aske my first name, obviously guessing. I said if she was the bank, she would have my first name, since its a joint account. I asked her name and a call back number, she snapped at me that I was being "rude" I said "so what"? You called me. The I attempted to call back the 800 number she gave me, a non-working number, nothing came up on Google. We contacted the bank and changed our account number.

Ruel of thumb--if they call you, they give the information, not the other way around!

Also, for some reason, many scams originate from Arizona, something about regulations not as strict or something like that. Just something I read, but it pays to be cautious whenever dealing with sensitive information, regardless of the origin of the call!
