Help! Is it true about the worms??

I'll never forget the giant flying cockroach we had in our room at a 5 star hotel in Maui :earseek:

No place is immune to bugs.........

If it's a chronic room problem, I'd have a problem. A few here and there, that's just the world we live in!

Thanks for the link, as I wanted to know what they looked like. Sounds like Millipedes to me. Here is some info and while icky looking they are harmless.

Sounds like the suitcase in question got in the path of migration and picked up a few pregnant ones.

For any future guests, always let housekeeping know, so you can either be moved or the room treated. And Yes rooms with outside doors on first floor are naturally more likely to have pests.

Millipedes
Millipedes live outdoors in damp areas such as under leaves, needles and dead plant debris, or in cracks and crevices. They feed on damp and decaying vegetable matter and are beneficial as "recyclers" of organic matter. However, they become a pest when they migrate into buildings as accidental invaders. Millipedes are usually found in the garage, basement or lowest level although they may wander into other parts of the house. They are most active at night and usually hide during the day in cracks and other moist locations.
Millipedes are harmless; they do not feed upon building structures or furnishings and they can not bite or sting. Millipedes can not reproduce indoors. All millipedes found inside wandered in by mistake.

Controls for millipedes are aimed at keeping millipedes outdoors or reducing their numbers at the source. Cracks, gaps and other points of entry around windows and doors and in foundation walls should be sealed if possible. Removing organic matter such as plant mulch and dead leaves from against the house may help, and damp conditions around the house foundation should be corrected.

Insecticides are of limited benefit in controlling millipedes because of the protected areas where they originate and because of the long distances they migrate. In warm weather when millipedes are actively wandering, residual insecticides such as Sevin, malathion, Baygon, Dursban, and diazinon can be applied in a 5- to 20-foot wide barrier around the building to reduce entry. If practical, also spray areas where the millipedes likely originate. Thorough application will aid in control, but reliance on chemical control alone is often unsatisfactory.

Millipedes migrate long distances during certain times of the year (varies with the weather, but commonly in spring or fall). Therefore, actions near the house may have no effect. Some sources of millipedes such as woodlands and crop reserve program fields can produce extremely large numbers of millipedes that invade from distances of 50 feet or more.

The indoor use of household insecticides provides little if any benefit. Millipedes that wander indoors usually die in a short time because of the dryness, and spraying cracks, crevices and room edges is not very useful. Sweeping or vacuuming up the invaders and discarding them is the most practical option.

Thanks for the info Sammie! It did set my mind somewhat at ease, of course I will still follow the advice of keeping luggage off the floor so those little buggers do not come home with me.

Have a magical day everyone!

"Millipedes and centipedes are not insects, but are more closely related to lobsters, crayfish and shrimp. However, unlike their marine cousins, millipedes and centipedes are land dwellers. They are most often found in moist habitats or areas of high humidity."
Scampi anyone?

Eeeewww...millipedes really give me the heebie jeebies! They make my skin crawl even worse than spiders, I think it's because of all the legs. I sure hope I don't see any. We see them occasionally around here but not very often. Maybe it's too cold?

Okay now

That one on the link from Disneyland was just plain gross. Wonder how it would be with some garlic and lemon butter, shelled of course.

Just to respond to the posts of the bugs in Florida...I hope to live there, the sooner the better...I realize bugs/nature are a part of the plan. However, the fact that we DID contact the front desk,(daily) housekeeping, and also a CM who was working the grounds and nothing was done in response, no can of spray, etc., that was annoying. We did not freak, rant, just asked for assistance in removing them. I would request this of ANY resort I was at...tropical or not. I am in a building, not camping. As I said, we removed them each a.m. We were a first floor, so it did not surprise me as to accssessability (tho we were 1st floor at CR N Wing and had no critters there-except ducks) I was simply remarking that of the WDW resorts we have stayed at CBR did indeed have these guys in the shower/bath area as the OP had inquired about. Did they ruin our trip? No. Did we come home and post about them? No. But if someone asks if they were there, I will tell them so.

Wow! People are really getting soft. We live in our air conditioned and exterminated palaces. It is a little bug. You are 8000x times bigger than it, if it bothers you smash it with your shoe and flush it. Don't run screaming and call security. It is florida, warm year round. There is no way to get rid of all the bugs.

Bravo. I completely agree.

How ridiculous to lose it over a bug.

In general I'm ok with bugs, especially if it's outside. When possible I also catch and release. I'll have to say that millipedes do gross me out, though. I'm ok with the basic spider, but I don't like to be surprised such as I was recently when I was on the computer and a spider crawled up my leg. Made me jump for sure!

We stayed at CBR recently (ground floor) and didn't see any sign of bugs in the room.

When we were walking outside I had to keep telling my DH to be careful so he wouldn't step on the lizards. I love the lizards!

T&B

A bug doesn't bother me. But if they're marching in and setting up camp, you'd better believe I'd be asking for the room to be sprayed. And a room change if that didn't remedy the situation.

Personally, I don't think we need to respond harshly, to this persons genuine concern that she may be taking a few unwanted hitchhikers back home with her. She doesn't like bugs!! She has planned this vacation for a while now (like all of us) layed out some cash for her room and is it so much to ask that her suit case not be infected with worms once she leaves?

I don't fine that inreasonalble at all. She didn't say she was going to demand her money back if a spider crawled accross the floor. I just think that the ones over reacting are the responders of this post! Personally, I don't like bugs and I believe they should all live outside. Living in the west and being from the east I have experienced both--we have tons of spiders here in CO, an they are numerous in my finished basement they are my least favorite of all bugs--Just the sight of a spider makes my skin crawl--if there was one of decent size in my room I would react to that for sure.

Chill Out everyone!

We found these worms as well on three occasions during a stay at Pop Century from October 18-23. I was also worried about them infesting our clothes and suitcases! I blame the lack of housekeeping. They only come every other day - which is insulting for rooms they are charging $300/night for - regardless of the location! Near our preferred room in the 60s it also looked like they were storing the clean linens outside in trolleys. I wonder if that's how they might be getting in.1000007301.jpg

While I always enjoy a good millipede pic, closing this 2004-vintage thread to avoid confusion and replies to 20-year old posts.

Just a general note to posters, it is almost always better to start a new thread (no matter what starts to auto-populate when you start typing in a thread title) vs resurrecting an older thread.

Thank you!
