I came here because i'm stuck--Windows Police Pro has infected my computer. I had Mcafee but it expired 2 weeks ago and as we're moving I figured we'd be fine till we got into the new house. Nope.

I have no desktop and managed to get online in a link on a help section of my computer.

Someone please tell me how to get rid of this thing!!!

I've run searches on it but keep getting websites that say the same exact thing in each one so I'm afraid it's the bug giving me the sites. I tried to download a scan from microsoft but it blocks it saying it's infected.

Anyone know what to do!?!?!

Don't log off or you will never get back on line. I got this virus on my laptop and ended up having to get it repaired at Office Depot ($208 by the way) it is a very nasty virus and they told me they were getting 10-15 computers in every single day.

Was told most people are getting this virus on news sites like CNN and FOX and so on. Mine came from our local KTVB.com. So biney and Judy from Boise if you read this stay away from that site.

try going to malwarebytes.org and download their free Malware remover. It works very well and may be able to get rid of this for you.

I wanted to say Thanks to those who helped!

Before I had posted that I was on hold with a McAfee representative on online chat--just after I posted it my computer shut down. The Mcafee people called me on the phone and I willing paid the $90 for their virus technician to remotely access my computer and get rid of the problem.

Well that's not what I got.

I got "hannah" in India and she took control of my computer and screwed it royally. Then had the nerve to tell me that my problem wasn't a virus but that I needed to contact Compaq because my problem was my computer because she had gotten rid of the virus (all she did as far as I could see was delete it from the task manager).

Before McAfee I could access the internet from the task manager--by the time she was done I couldn't do anything. I had nothing on my desktop to include the Windows Police Pro box and whenever I hit Ctrl/Alt/Del a box popped up that said "Task manager has been disabled by your administrator"

I can't even get anything when I start it in safe mode or even the setting for the last known good configuration--I've got nothing. Had I known that was the way this was gonna go I'd have put all my pictures on a disk while I had access to them.

So if you get this thing take your computer to a technician locally DON'T let McAfee do anything. I have called and left messages but haven't gotten a call back but I'm going to find other numbers for them because I want my $90 back. Heck I need it to put towards a new computer.

Well I got in touch with McAfee. This time I got "Michael" in India and he kept insisting that they were "Trained Virus Removal Specialists"

He kept telling me that the computer crashing was not their fault and that the virus infected my rootkit and was beyond their control and said that my case was going to the technicians further up and that they would contact me back in 2 to 3 days--Hannah told me the same thing yesterday after she killed my computer.

I told him you destroyed my computer!! He said they had no control of what the virus would do so it wasn't their fault. I asked him if they were trained so well then why weren't they able to remove it before it did damage and he said that the virus was one they were unable to work on so I asked if they were the specialists and they knew what the virus would do and that they couldn't do anything then why charge me $90 for something they could do nothing about.

I am sick to death right now. He said he would refund the $90 but after some online reading I don't think I'll hold my breath.

I can't stand McAfee, we had more viruses when we had McAfee "virus protection" then we've ever had. It's pathetic. Anyway, I use AVG, it's free and it's better than ANY virus protection I've ever had. I hope you get your computer back soon, fixed and ready to use, and I hope you get your money and photos too. :)

Its not really McAfee's fault then that you got a virus. You said you allowed it to expire. It would have happened with ANY expired virus protection, not just McAfee.

I hope you get your computer back to normal soon.

I had AVG and got the virus the OP is talking about. When I told the tech I had AVG she said "well you got what you paid for didn't you" $208.99 later mine is fixed.

I was thinking the same thing. I've used McAfee for years and have never had a problem. The only time you're fine without virus protection is when the computer is turned off.

Hope you get everything fixed!!

Yes if you want protection you need a program that is not expired. The virus program could be scanning your computer, but not with an updated database. New viruses are being written all the time.

I use another program and it is constantly updating the virus database.

I don't blame McAfee for my computer getting a virus. I blame McAfee for shoddy service which destroyed my computer.

This virus isn't a new one and there are lots of places online that have the instructions to remove it. Safely I might add. They call themselves "Trained Virus Removal Experts" but the training was sorely lacking when it came to me yesterday. Had the tech had the knowledge they advertised as having my computer wouldn't be ready for the scrap pile.

I paid $90 for a cure that was worse than the illness. Had I come back here I would've seen a prior posters instructions but I was already on the phone with McAfee at that point. The techs not knowing how to remove the virus is what destroyed my computer.

I switched both laptops to Trend Micro Internet Security Pro about a 19 months ago. So far so good. Its quick, constantly updating and scanning and does not slow down my laptop at all.

I'm always cutting and pasting financial and economic articles then burning documents to disks. I also search foreign news services for info, which make me nervous.

I purchased a used Thinkpad three yrs. ago which already had a cheap virus program. I did not change to another named virus program. We were also moving when that contract expired.

Now, I only get the blue screen when powering up. I just gave up and bought a new laptop at that time. Things like this always happen at the least convenient time.

Sometime when I have extra cash its going to drop if off for service.

Try Trend Micro. It might be time for a change.

Good luck.

I don't think your computer is ready for the scrap pile as you stated. At most, you are having software issues, not hardware issues. At the very worse, you would have to re-install operating system & all applications.

Yes, viruses stink. And yes, people can mess up computers. But you do NOT need to throw it away. Hopefully you regularly backup all your important data & pictures. Before long, you'll be back where you were.

I hate that virus. I have had to wipe my computer clean once with it. Now when I get hit with it, I just turn off my computer right away. As long as I don't click on anything I am good.

And the first time I got hit was when my Norton's expired. Now most of the time I get hit going on the Google. You have to watch out.

I have Norton's and still pick it up. I did hate McAfee, but that was because it bogged my computer down.

Malware is a great site and free!!! It helped to rid my computer of a lot of bugs and it functions normally now. I was this close to taking it to Data Doctors and paying $$.

A few people have already suggested malwarebytes.org, I just wanted to third it. I had the same issue on a desktop, the virus hijacked every attemp to access the internet and redirected you to its website. I downloaded malwarebytes from another computer burned it to a cd and installed it from there. 30 minutes later and the pc was working normally.

Note to self: quit procrastinating and get that dang virus protection for your new computer! :headache:

Thanks for the reminder - sorry it has to be at your expense!

I should have suggested downloading it to a flash drive, inserting it in the infected computer and then starting in safe mode. You can also search for RootKit removers, I believe Microsoft has one for download.

curious as what you are using for a web-browser also. I had/have been using Firefox for about 4-5 years and really haven't had this problem, just what the kids put on here and I still think those are false-positives. I have started to check out google's chrome, Firefox was becoming a resource hog.
