Well as per usual things can't just go smoothly. Someone stole my wallet out of my car on Saturday morning. Inside my wallet was all my ID plus my daughters birth certificate and my own. Anybody used the "expedited birth certificate service for lost or stolen id"? I saw it on the government of Ontario website. It says that if you've had you Id stolen you can use this service and for an additional fee have it done in 2 business days.....is this just a dream? Anyone ever use this? Also my drivers liscence is gone so that leaves me with no photo id. How long does that take? I could really use some advice right about now?
Thanks
Pkitty!

I don't know much about the birth certificates but as far as the driver's license goes, I think you just have to go to Registry of Motor Vehicles and they will replace it for you on the spot. You probably have to pay for it though.

I don't know how the government of Ontario works when it comes to lost or stolen ID, but I know here in Alberta, if you lose it, you need some kind of ID to replace it (ok, so my wallet just gets stolen with my ONLY id in it, what am I supposed to use???). I remember when I went, I had no other photo ID (except a really old expired passport) and it was a nightmare to replace my stuff.
I needed a birth certificate to go to Vegas not that long ago too. It was Thursday - we were leaving on Sunday. I was born in Saskatchewan and they had a speedier service, for a fee larger than what it cost to get the BC replaced, but I had it by Friday morning! So, it could be possible that Ontario does the same thing.

I don't have any personal experience with this, but the 2 day BC option sounds good. From your counter it looks like you have a little more than a month. Do you still have your health card? That at least is a photo id.

So sorry this happened to you.

What a drag!!

A friend of mine went to apply for a passport and her birth certificate had a tear in it. They would not accept it and told her she had to get a new birth cert. before she could apply for a passport (this all one month before her honeymoon).

She applied for the birth certificate and was told that the waiting period was 70 days. Needless to say she started crying and said that her husband was going to Spain without her then. They then put a rush on the b.c. however she then needed to rush the passport as well. In the end she finally got her passport a day before her wedding and had a great honeymoon.

In regards to your drivers' license I am sure you can get a temporary one until yours comes in (at least). When we moved and I had to get the address changed it only took a week to get it and they have the picture on file so you do not need to get that redone.

Good luck

Thanks everyone...I went to the Ontario government website and it tells me there that as long as I fall into the category of "expediated service" with proof of "urgency" (this includes travel confirmation or airline tickets) they can fasttrack my stuff....whew. My drivers lisence is an absolute requirement because I need photo id as well as my birth certificate if I plan on getting through customs on the 28th of February. Now I am wondering how long my drivers license is going to take....if it's only a couple of weeks great if not I'll have another dilemma to solve?! As far as the health card goes...it's the hardest to get back and I'll need this other stuff to do it. I have a copy of the police report to give to the MTO on Monday to get my lisence back. He tells me this should do the job...I hope so. What a drag this is...oh well WDW in a few weeks (touch wood)! :hourglass

This might be a stupid question but don't you have a passport? Is this the problem? You need this stuff to get a passport OR you were planning to travel without one?

Never required one oddly enough! I have travelled all over including the Doninican Republic and the Carribean...no problem...you don't need one for that. My stupid mistake was to have "everything" in my wallet including my daughters birth certificate and my own. If it was simply a case of replacing DL and credit cards, stuff like that, it wouldn't be a problem. Yes you do require proof of citizenship in order to apply for a passport so in fact you do need a birth certificate. I haven't had a passport for about 15 years now because every time I travel it's not required.I just have to chalk this one up to poor judgement I guess...you'd think I'd know better...my husband is a cop! :confused3

I know that you don't need a passport to travel to the States from Canada but I would never go without one. There was a time when I might but these days, anything that makes things at the airport easier is fine by me. I'm sure it will all work out for you. I'm sure there's more than enough time to get your documents back as long as they put a rush on replacements for you.

We just applied for passports for the kids. I had them on my previous passport that just expired and you cannot do this anymore. One reason for getting the passport is go we do not have to travel with birth certificates. If we lose our passport we do not generally need it that often, however birth certificates can still get you over the border.

I had to expedite my birth certicate. I went to my MP's offfice and they gave me a form to fill out and had to show them airline tickets. I got it back in three buisness days. It cost 50.00. I did this last week. Hope this helps.

Somefunmum That really helps! Iwas told by someone that this could be done but I figured it was to good to be true! That's excellent! i was planning on calling there tomorrow just to se if that was in fact the case. This renews my hopes! Thanks everyone for the advice! I can always rely on this board for the tools to get the job done!
Thanks everyone!

Somefunmum I am assuming that this was your provincial MP?
