help! I think I need to start wearing makeup (and I never have before)

Mare, I have one, but I never take the time to use it. They say using one makes the lipstick stay longer, but I do something else instead. When I need to use a lipstick and make it last a long while, I use a lip pencil in a matching shade of the lipstick. I use the pencil to outline the lips and then fill in with the pencil. Then I use the lipstick, blot it and use it again. Then lipgloss on top of that, but not much because it makes the lipstick fade faster.

Serena, :cool1: I do this trick also. (I skip the gloss). At work, I do not have time to reapply lipstick and need it to last esp. since I'm yakking away all day AND seeing myself in a mirror. Using the lipliner and then applying the lipstick really helps! Mare, I do not have to use the liner when I use the lipstick I told you about.

Why do I need makeup?? I have pretty dramatic dark circles under my eyes, part genetics and part having a 17 month old who just started to sleep through the night. I also am looking very pale and washed out in photos. Just need something to make me look like me but better.

I don't know if you dye your hair or not. But it's unreal, as one gets older, what hair colour can do for the eye area and complexion in general.

I'm in the same boat as you. Well, I'm probably older. I just started wearing makeup this year...just turned forty. Usually wore gloss or a nude lipstick but that was it. Wanted to look like me so I avoided it all these years. Must say though it has been fun to change at this age. Mascara, which I wear once in awhile now, makes such a difference. I've also started wearing mineral makeup some days. That suggestion is great. I haven't tried it but Everyday Minerals, is that the name guys?, will send you free samples.

Also, Clinique's City Block is a sunscreen, I found recently, that evens out skintone at the same time. One little adventure at a time for me. Will never do a full face but it's interesting. Have fun OP.

I do that too, with the lip pencil...I always use one...filling in the lips with it. :thumbsup2 I skip the gloss tho too...seems like that's all I can think about when I have it on...that my lips are "slippery". :confused3 There was a time when I wouldn't be without my lipbrush (BC...before children), but it got old and icky and I got rid of it and never replaced it. But, I did like how well I could define where to put the lipstick with it. I might get one from Garden Botanika...I think that's where I had gotten the last one, before they closed their stores.

Ulta will often do makeovers with the bare minerals makeup. I don't use the stuff myself (too $$ for me) but I see the sign at Ulta all the time.

Dept store makeup counters will do a makeover but usually expect a purchase of a product or two. I still think it's often worth it to see how they apply certain things and what colors look good.

I use a mix of drug store stuff, samples, and whatever else I find along the way. One of my FAVORITE items is the Burts Bees Lip Shimmers. Awesome Burts Bees stuff with a tint of color. They are super cheap ($3-$4) and work just as well as a lipstick.

I use benefit cosmetics when I wear makeup. They have a bit of everything for different problems that are needed in makeup fixes. It's a bit expensive though. I love it though.

Snoopy- head over to Nordstrom's and go to the Bobbi Brown counter and get a makeover- The most natural, easy to pull off looks in makeup.
If you are slightly more adventurous head over to Trish McEvoy- same general style but with a little more Pizazz!

I recommend getting a makeover too!!!

I never heard of Bobbi Brown, but whenever I have a makeup question, I always ask at the Clinque counter. I personally do wear a decent amount of makeup, because I do this :scared1: when I see me w/o makeup:laughing: But I come from a family that doesn't go out of the house w/o makeup - it's how I was raised, and that's now how I am.

There's nothing wrong with not wearing makeup, and I have many friends that don't wear any makeup. But I agree with you, that if you feel pale, you may need something light to give you a little more color. Good luck with this, it will be a change for you, but I think you will enjoy it, when you get used to it :)

I start with a good tinted moistiser I use one by Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer. but have been look at the Smart Shade ones by Almay. I by most of my drug store make up at CVS, great return policy & sales. Good brushes are the key.

Dark circles can also be allergy. For me, my circles disappear when I dump dairy from my diet. I mean ALL dairy, even down to whey and nonfat milk solids, and all the other ways dairy sneaks into foods. My allergies and sensitivities disappear too.

I was a Tomboy growing up too. Never very interested in makeup. I'm a minimalist. I use sunscreen everyday at least 45 SPF. Clinique concealer under my eyes and on some random trouble spots. They have shades to match your skin tone. I think it was $10.50 for a tube and it last me something like 6 months. I use some medium color lipstick (not too dark, not too light), I like mauvey pinks it works with my skin tone. And I curl my eyelashes with an eyelash curler (that took some acquired talent for me LOL). That's about it. I do use Aveeno Positively Radiant moisturizing lotion at night. I like it a lot!

When I want to get real snazzy I use mascara. :)

I have tried the Bare Minerals. I've got the starter kit around here somewhere. It didn't go on so well for me. I joked about it here that I looked like I got in a fight with a powder puff and the powder puff won. I'm sure with time I'd get used to it. Lots of people rave about it. It doesn't take much I'm sure. I just kept seeing places that had more than others and I wanted to even it out. I've been thinking about trying a mineral makeup that has the brush attached to the compact of minerals. It may go on easier for me. I don't know.

Anyway, I'm no expert. I like what I do. It doesn't feel very fussy, it gives me some umph, and looks natural. That's all I want.
