HELP! Having banana problems...need advice!

Ugh, this is driving me nuts! I usually don't get organic bananas because of a bad experience a while back. I had bought some not-yet-ripe organic bananas. I waited and waited and waited for the darn things to turn yellow; they never did. It actually was going on a few weeks and they were still green, but with a greyish brown tinge to them. It was almost comical.

One day I decided to open one, just to see what the heck was going on inside. I cut it in half with a knife, and from the porous wholes in the cross section of the skin oozed out this clear, super sticky substance. Gross! It took several washings of my hands to get it to come off.

So I didn't get organic for a while. Then, I decided to try again, from a different store. We got bananas on a couple of occasions from Wegman's, which were almost ripe (yellow with just a hint of green). They turned out fine.

So one week ago, we got another bunch from Wegman's, this time completely green. They are still green but starting to turn that greyish brown I described earlier. WHAT IS THE STUPID DEAL WITH THESE BANANAS? They aren't cheap! Why won't they ripen? Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to do something special to ripen them? Right now they are on a banana hanger.

I prefer to eat organic if I can, but will settle for non-organic if need be. But these organic bananas are for my baby, who I will not settle for organic. Any advice is welcome; I feel like I'm throwing my money away and it's messing up the meals I plan for my baby.

I have never heard of that. Ask the produce manager at the store. I wonder if these organic bananas don't turn yellow when they ripen. Maybe you can tell if they are ripe by squeezing them a bit, instead of waiting for the right color.

i agree with asking the produce manager at the grocery. i have found ours to be very helpful.

The title of the thread had me worried, considering what many of us refer to the dancing banana as... Not exactly G rated, if you get my drift. I was going to refer you to a different website, not that I know what it would be!

we buy organic - and no they very often do not ripen. If the organics are green, I just don't buy bananas that week.

I'm scared to ask which kind of banana problems people are having. I have some overripe ones in a basket. The are getting spotty. Pretty soon I'll have to mush them into banana bread. Get your minds out of the gutter!!!

I get irritated because my family complains that we don't have fresh fruit, but then I buy it and they don't eat it and I have to throw it away. What's that all about?

It's not only organic bananas that do this it is all bananas. So not buy them if they are so green.... to make them ripen quicker you can place them in a brown paper bag on the counter and that will quicken the ripening before the bananas go bad.

Also, put an apple in the bag with the bananas...there's a chemical in the apple that triggers ripening in the banana.

You can also save a banana from teh last bunch--evidently it will help bananas as well as fellow fruit ripen.

(we also did some research on Flowers for a science experiment--I found a tidbit but did not investigate it fully, so not sure if it is true--but do not place bananas especially ripened bananas near your floral arrangement. Supposedly it will encourage the flowers to not live as long. Again--didn't research it in full--but found that interesting. Something about a chemical that the bananas release as they ripen).

When I first clicked on this, I thought it was you still having issues with sending your DH emails he couldn't interpret!!

As far as the REAL bananas, I have had that happen too and when I have taken them into the store, they give me a refund and I buy new bananas. They couldn't tell me why it sometimes happened and sometimes didn't.

My answer based on the title of thread was going to be Viagra or Cialis, but after reading your post I guess that isn't the advice you are looking for.

I buy green bananas, I put then on my banana hanger and they usually ripen nicely. I prefer a firmer, not-so-ripened banana. Once they start getting brown spots, ICK. Too sweet and too soft.
