Stupid me! I was moving our couches around and when I was all done, I made a 4 foot scratch in our hardwood floor:headache:

I googled repair help and they say to sandpaper the area then put an oil-based finish on the area.

Has anyone had success repairing a scratch and how did you do it?
Thanks for your help in advance

Hi

It really depends on how deep the scratch is. If it is only a surface scratch, you may be able to cover it with wood scratch repair product (like Minwax Stain Marker - sold at Home Depot) or a wood filler product (like a Minwax wood putty mix) - or even a combination of both.

If the scratch is quite deep, you may want to have a professional repair it, unless you are very handy. Refinishing only one section of a wood floor can make that area VERY noticeable unless you blend it very well.

Sorry I cannot be more help.

I also read recently that if you can find a crayon in a close color, color over the scratch, then heat it with a hair dryer and rub it with a soft cloth until it fills the scratch. I've used the markers with limited success - unless they match exactly, they are still noticeable.

I had a smaller scratch in my kitchen floor that is cherry wood. I took the meat of a walnut (or 2 or 3) and rubbed it HARD into the scratch. It covered it up!

Get two large dogs - German Shepherds work well - and allow them to run through the house at full speed frequently. Before long, the scratch will blend right in. :rotfl:

Seriously, good luck with the repair - I just couldn't resist the comment, as the scratches drove me NUTS when the house was brand new. Now I figure we'll just refinish them someday. :rotfl2:

Similarly, move into your first house. Look under the carpet and see beautiful red oak floors. Start pulling the carpet up and roll up into a ball. Proceed to remove all the staples out of the floor and toss them into a plastic bag in the middle of the floor. That is the first important part. The second important part is to yank that big heavy rolled up carpet out the front door to find when you go back in that you pulled it right over top of the bag of staples and nails and dragged that bag across the floor as well.

for the MANY scratches in our hardwood floor, I used Old English Scratch Cover for Darker Wood. I rub it in the scratch and it will look a little too dark, but after mopping once or twice it blends right in!

looks like this and got it right in the grocery store.

I forgot to mention the color of our hardwood is light oak. Lots of good ideas, thank you thank you! I'll report back what works.
