Help! Found an Injured Sandhill Crane. New Update: Post 20

I just saw this, hope it all works out. Seems crazy that they are arguing over who has authority over a stupid rentention pond. :sad2:

Here's the web site of perhaps the best exotic vet in Florida. http://members.tripod.com/weah4/index.html

She's up in the Gainesville area, and there are a lot of links on her site that might be helpful. She's VERY invovled in recue and rehab, and if you continue to strike out, give her office a call and see if she can help--I know of a situation where she made one phone call and things moved very fast after that.

what's pathetic is they're fighting over the jurisdiction of an endangered species. sandhill cranes are the closest living bird species to dinosaurs.

Wow! I had no idea about that. Any links you've got? It sounds like something interesting to read about. :thumbsup2

I had no idea that sandhill cranes were considered endangered. I hunt waterfowl in Texas and every year when I get my liscense I also get the regulations for the year that list bag limits and possesion limits and every year there is a listing for sandhill cranes. In the fall when I am bay fishing you see tons and tons of them flying and you can always tell they are coming by their rather unique call. If they are endangered why would we be allowed to hunt them in Texas?

We used to have a sandhill crane visit our house daily and it was missing its left foot. We called him nubbie.

The sand cranes love to lounge in our yard. They are always sitting down after they peck the ground for awhile.

The Sandhill Cranes in Texas are of a different sub species than the Florida Sandhill Cranes. Here in Florida the subspecies of Sandhill Cranes are listed as threatened and the subspecies from Mississippi are listed as endangered. The ones in Texas are called Greater Sandhill Cranes and are abundent in numbers. So that is probably why you are allowed to "hunt" them in Texas.

Keep us posted. If you don't get anywhere with the town and the lady who can help, let me know. We'll put the bird in the back of my car and drive him up to that exotic vet in Gainsville.

On second thought, Sandhill cranes are tall, so maybe we better take Ted's convertible. ;)

Let me know if you need help! Poor little guy!

OMG! The vision I had of one in a convertible was :lmao:

The thing is, this bird may be fine with its missing leg. I'm concerned because it's been near the pond for at least 4 days although its walking ability seems to be OK. I actually thought it was gone when I went down there this morning but it had moved from one side of the pond to the other and that's a pretty good hike. Also sandhills seem to be a chummy bunch and this poor guy or gal is all by itself.

You need to have a license to handle these birds and the lady I've mentioned in this thread does. She's his best hope. She's certainly well known by the various agencies I contacted yesterday.

I'll keep you all updated if and when I hear something. And Holly, where you're in town you could always call the town hall and say you saw the bird too. Hint. Hint. :teeth: You know... the ole squeaky wheel thing.

I just heard back from one of the rescue people. Because the pond belongs to the town, the animal control people have to be the ones to go in and get the crane. The pond is surrounded by a fence with a locked gate.

She told me to tell them to bring the bird to her house once they get it. She also said that despite its injury, as long as it can fly, it most likely will do OK.

So we'll see what tomorrow brings.

That's wonderful. Keep us posted on the plight of the crane. Persistance does pay off! :thumbsup2

Just got home from Walmart (LOVE going this time of day) and looked for the Sandhill Crane. I didn't see it. Does that mean that someone helped him?

Let me know who I need to call and it's done!

I've got a call into the guy I talked to at the DPW. As soon as I hear from him, I'll post. If they got the crane, that's good or if the crane was able to fly out of there, that's also good. Still I'd like to know what happened.

I just found this thread...bless your heart. I love knowing that there are other animal lovers like myself out there and that you haven't given up on the poor guy. Please keep us posted!

Curiouser and curiouser. :confused3 I just got a call back from the guy at town hall. He said they went down there right after I called them yesterday and, while there was a crane there, it appeared to have both feet. Looks like Mr or Mrs Crane is coming and going at will which is a good thing.

I told him I would bring his phone number with me and call if I spotted the bird again.

Well, it is sounding like everything is all better!

THANK GOODNESS!
