Help for NYC trip!!!

Thanks for the site. The last couple of times I've gone into the city it's been really, really cold. Thank goodness for my warm coat!

Yes sounds like Grennwich Vill is a good shopping/eating place. I got a few books from the lirbary today so for one thing the different areas are starting to make sense. Since our trip will be so short it looks like we should concentrate on the Upper East/West sides and down (down= south?=lower?).

Still probably good to stay Mid town hotel wise- a good base to go up or down it seems.

Anyone else planning a mid August trip? Let's keep this thread going!

If you really want to be in the "heart of the beast" (my friend's phrase for Times Square ;)), I'd look into the Marriot Marquee. I stayed there once for a conference and it was nice (and should be in the price range you quoted). It's positively HUGE, though; I prefer the Hotel Edison...on 48th, I think. Mid-range, smaller, quieter, and I love having lunch in the Polish Tea Room on the first level.

The Marriott Courtyard in Times Square was nice, clean with comfortable beds. It's on 40th St. Decent price. Godd location.

If you like Indian food, I highly recommed Brick Lane Curry House on East 6th St. and 2nd Ave.

DW and I will be in NYC for the first time for 3 nights in March (3/29 - 4/1).
It's our first kid-free trip in 12 years, so we're super excited.
We're actually going to 2 shows, so we decided we definitely wanted to be near the theaters. Right now, we have reservations at the Michelangelo. Our neighbor, who grew up in Manhattan, recommended it. The regular rates are very high, but we got a special winter rate, so we're paying $295 on Thurs and $240 on Fri and Sat nights. www.quikbook.com seems to have some really good rates on NYC hotels and most of them are fully refundable/cancellable. I used tripadvisor.com to read reviews on hotels when I was researching. travelzoo.com is also a good site, but most of their deals are only for the next couple months. I'd suggest using quikbook or another site and booking something now that can be cancelled. Then as the trip gets closer, you can keep your eye out for better deals.

Obviously I'm not an expert, but just a couple suggestions I've been given. Top of the Rock is supposed to be just as good as Empire State Building, but less crowded and shorter wait times. Also, if you just want to see the Statue of Liberty, but don't care about going in and don't want to spend the whole day doing it, a ride on the Staten Island ferry supposedly gives you a great view and is free (or very cheap)

It's the Marriott Marquis if you're looking it up.

I used to love the Hotel Edison. Why don't I stay there anymore?

This weekend I will be at the Westin Times Square. My mother and I have tickets to Mary Poppins tomorrow night.

The Staten Island ferry ride is great! And I think it was cheap, if not free. I won't be doing it this weekend though, it's going to be way too cold for that.

All of the places sound great. I 2nd Carmine's for dinner. It's delicious, has huge family sized portions and is very reasonable. Just make a reservation now. You could also send for tickets to Regis & Kelly, though it might be too late -- in fact, sorry, it probably is. Rachel Ray also tapes in New York, but I never received an answer for her ticket request or Emeril's either. The wax museum is fun, and doesn't take more than 90 minutes or so. I'd recommend 5th Avenue. The stores are fun to window shop in or browse through quickly and there are all price ranges there. Enjoy your trip.

Ok so what about this--- Top of the Rock vs top of the Empire State bldg. The bits I've been reading in other places are saying Top of the Rock (TOTR oh my god, more abbreviations to learn!), is a nicer experience...anyone???

Also my DD15 has agreed for shopping what we want is a funky neighborhood with little stores (ie vs 5th Ave or mall) --so---Greenwich Vill? SOHO? other?

You can find funky stores all over the city. I found a really great skirt (funky) walking up 7th Ave from Penn station. You really don't need to limit yourself to one area. I find that the stores in the village are pretty similar. Nice stuff, but after a couple you start to see basically the same stuff.

Is St Marks Place worth a visit then? Might be down there visiting Delancy St, etc-- one thing I read was that St Marks is pretty funky- music-y etc...

Also going to start trying to find a guided tour of Central Park- so much to see there, you could wander around all day and miss alot of highlites...

Is it far to go to is it--Papaya King?

I have been researching a trip to NYC. According to my reading on tripadvisor.com, Top of the Rock is just as good as Empire State Building if you are going for the view. The Staten Island Ferry is free.
