My niece's good friend might not be able to go to college because she didn't get the loans she thought she'd be getting because she has no one to co-sign for them. Her parents have bad credit, and no family will co-sign....I know nothing about these loans...does this make any sense? She has a PARTIAL soccer scholarship to the college she is/was going to. THanks for any help!

Well, she should speak with her prospective school's soccer coach and financial aid department to see if there is any additional money available. If they want her badly enough, they'll find money or a work-study somewhere.

If not, she may need to get a job and go to school on a part-time basis. It may take longer but she will appreciate it more. Also, if she can get a job with a good company, they may pay for part or even all of her tuition. For someone in good physical condition, a company like UPS or FedEx might be something to look into as I believe both of these companies have pretty decent tuition reimbursement programs.

I work as an admissions officer for a private school and I know a little about financial aid......so I hope I can help.

First of all, do you know what type of loans she needed a co-signer for? There are some types of loans where you WANT the co-signer to be denied because that means more money for the child (I know, it sounds very confusing and ridiculous, but that is our lovely govt). So make sure she has checked on this. Has she called the financial aid department of the school to tell them this. If she explains the situation, they might be more than willing to help her out.

As the previous poster said, talk to her soccer coach, the one from highschool and the one for the college and see if they can recommend anything.

And hit the internet and look for scholarships and private funding. I know that the time is ticking, but it is worth a shot!

I hope these suggestions help. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I will talk to her. I just feel so bad...I mean here's a good kid, just trying to get an education and things are not working in her favor.

If she has a soccer scholarship (even partial), she needs to call her prospective school's athletic department and her soon-to-be coach as soon as possible to let them know what's going on.

They will most likely be able to hook her up with (NCAA approved) sources for funding.
