Help! Fleas!

So we had fleas so bad. I would wear white socks and just watch my feet to see them jump on my socks so I could grab them and flush right away. We tried the things available at the store. I have a friend that is a vet and she told me I had to use Advantage. It worked but only temporarily keeping them at bay. I was fogging my carpets every two weeks or spraying with Raid. Vacuuming every day. Me and my youngest were the only ones that were getting bit by the fleas beside the cat. My son when he was a baby would get so many bites and scratch them he got tons of little scars. I thought I was going crazy. Actually I'm getting itchy just thinking about it!

A friend had done some research on Diatomaceous earth. I was very skeptical. But she said she just sat and petted her cat and kept sprinkling a little bit into his fur and then rubbing it in. I think she realized I was skeptical and she brought me over a small jar of it. So I said what the heck! I pick up a pinch of it and rub it into his fur. Trying to get down to the skin. I just keep doing it all over his body. That was at least 6 months ago. I have not seen another flea on him since. I sprinkled it into my carpet and left it overnight and vacuumed in the morning. I have not been bitten by another flea. It is incredible to me. Periodically I do it to him again. I also sprinkled it on his food that first time. It is effective against internal worms and parasites as well. I haven't purchased it personally but its on Amazon. Food grade diatomaceous earth- http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&ke...vptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_5c77pbmmct_b

It's not toxic. I was worried about all the flea spray I was spraying in my house with my young children. But I couldn't stand the fleas!

Good luck!!

I have 4 dogs and ran a rescue for a long time. Along with all the awesome advice this is what I tell people. We rarely/if ever have a flea problem. Get flea meds from the vet. We use Revolution and it is amazing. When you bath your dog, in the rinse water use a little essential oil that is either mint or lavender. Fleas hate those smells. I also planted Corsican mint in my yard you can walk on it and it makes nice ground cover. Most importantly don't stop even after you think you have it licked. You have to break the cycle then keep up on the treatments. Good luck.

I feel your pain. Switching to a different preventative will help. I've never found frontline very effective. As it will only kill larvae and the adults will only die if they bite the dog. Well, what about the adults that are just along for the ride right into the house. I switched to Advantix II with great success. Here's a link to a comparison between frontline and advantix. http://www.1800petmeds.com/Frontline+Plus+to+K9+Advantix+II+-compare10006.html

As far as your house...I agree with the others, vacuum daily etc.

Anyone try Nexgard?
I asked on the Community Board and received 2 positive replies, no negative ones. Figured I'd ask on this thread also. Thanks.

This is not an easy task. Yes, its a nightmare.

-I boarded my cats for a week during this process.
-I had a professional company come in with industrial bombs. The ones in the stores are not the same.
-Vacuum everyday. Everything! If you have a bagless vacumm you can actually see them jumping and moving in the canister.
-I find Advantix better than frontline.

They don't disappear overnight.

Never again in my house, I faithfully treat my cats.

Goodluck!

Put mothballs in your sweeper. When you sweep you will pick up fleas and flea eggs and the mothballs will kill them.

What ever you do consult your Vet before applying anything to your pet. I had a vet appt. and it was delayed by an hour which is rare. They said the delay was because a family used flea treatment on two of their dogs and the dogs started having back to back seizures! The Vet said he had a hard time getting it under control. So always ask a vet first.

We've always gotten a pill from the vet once a month until this year. Our poor baby has been miserable with fleas. We did everything - I mean EVERYTHING! Went back to the vet to get the pill - and will be back to the vet next month. Trying to save those dollars is so not worth it.

What's the name of the pill?

Another vote for Trifexis. Our dogs got fleas while they were on Advantage; the vet told us that fleas in our area had become resistant to it. Trifexis rid both of our dogs of fleas in 8 hours, and we never saw fleas again after that.

To get rid of the fleas in the house I started a vacuuming regiment combined with flea traps (the sticky paper/light ones) that I bought on Amazon. I've never had an issue since then.

For a flea medicine to be effective on a dog or cat, it has to be used for 4 months straight. That way it will kill the entire life cycle. One application is just going to kill the adult fleas, not the eggs they've been laying all over the place.

I can second this as well. We had bad fleas last year---DD2 brought them in with her cats when she came to stay with us for a month. I used DE on the animals and on the carpets/rugs/furniture. It took 4 months or so of repeated applications----treat, sit over night, brush the animals, vacuum the house, etc.

Also, I started the animals on Brewer's Yeast with garlic pills (1 crushed for the cats daily, 5 tablets for the dog). No problems getting them to eat them--they think it's a treat. The vet said the garlic will help with the flea issue.

One year, no fleas!

Nitepyram-be careful of this. I used on my cats (capstar) and two of them started hyperventilating. Did more research. On it and found it can cause some problems. Just make sure you monitor pet.

Brewers yeast with garlic-garlic is toxic to cars, not sure about dogs.

Finally if you have been using frontline and not effective, found out fleas have become immune to it. I switched to advantage for my cats and fleas are being killed.

How much time and energy do you want to put into getting rid of the fleas? We had a visitor bring a pet into our home and leave fleas on our indoor cats a few years ago. We tried several home remedies, thinking it would save us money, but after two weeks of DH's ankles covered in flea bites, we called an exterminator.

Cats and humans had to leave the house for four hours during the treatment and it only cost us $90. Wish we would have done that on day 1! We still had to vacuum to get rid of dead eggs, but it was so much easier that trying to coat everything with borax, sevin dust, etc.
