Were leaving next week for a 10 day trip and decided we don't want to haul our huge car seat through the airport for our 2 year old or check either of our car seats (2yr old and 7 month old) because they're so expensive and I know what sometimes happens to our regular luggage. We'll be taking several trips this year alone where we'll need car seats for the rental cars and at $10/day to rent the yucky ones the car rental places have, I think I'd rather buy some specifically for travelling. Can someone please recommend lighter weight/less bulky not-too-expensive car seats please....

The Cosco Scenera with 5-pt harness costs about $40 at Walmart/Kmart/Target and is awesome for traveling.

The Safety 1st Uptown, also sold at Walmart & Target for is more expensive ($99), but has EPP foam, higher top harness slots, easy install, and would also be nice for travel.

Hth!

Thanks! I will look into both of those.

We have a Cosco one for traveling that FEELS like it weighs about 5 lbs! Its about 6 years old so I don't know if the design name is the same but it sounds like its probably the Scenera mentioned about. I got it at a Kmart sale for $20.

I would also check out the forums at car-safety.org. There are some excellent reviews and cps technicians on-site that could answer your questions. They always respond quickly too!

It sounds like the Cosco is the way to go. Can't really go wrong for $40!! I don't mind buying 2 for travel purposes. I also saw the carry case (back pack) and think we'll get those also so the 2 yr old can use the seat on the plane. Thanks for the help!

Make sure that the seats are airline certified if you plan on taking them on the planes as well ! :)

You're welcome. I also thought I would mention if you 2yr old is getting taller and might not have much growing room in the Scenera or Uptown, then a f/fing only seat like the Evenflo Chase might be another option. I, of course, am big proponent of extended rearfacing but if your LO is close to 30# or too tall for the Scenera, then a harnessed combo seat might be a better option for travel.

Take the seat. All you need is to get yourself a carseat dufflebag. Its priceless!
