If I make reservations at the 7 mo. mark for SSR using DP, can I cancel those at a later date to use the same DP for an RCI trade? If we can't get the nightly stay at the place we want at the 10 mo. mark for RCI, we'd like the SSR reservations to fall back on. Any suggestions would be so much appreciated!

I think you are asking if you can use the ADRs (dining reservations) for the same trip? Yes, you can do that. The DP itself would have to be booked thru the reservation itself and that would not pass thru if you cancel the DVC reservation - but you can reserve the DP for the RCI trade if that comes thru for you.

Just make the dining reservations you want and they will be honored regardless how your room reservation was made.

Good luck! :)

Ooops............Does DP stand for dining plan? I was using DP to stand for developer points. Thanks for the quick response, Doc. I waqs wondering if I can make a ressie at SSR using developer pts. and cancel them to use for an RCI trade if the resort we want is available at the 10 mo. window....

Sorry, I misunderstood! :(

Yes, you could reserve at SSR using Developer Points and then cancel to use them for a World Passport exchange.

Just be certain that MS is able to "hold" the RCI exchange for you before cancelling the DVC reservation or it's possible to end up with no reservation. RCI does allow a "Hold" for 24 hours for some resorts and until business close for others - so you should be OK if you can find availability at a resort you want thru RCI.

Good luck! :)

am I understanding this correctly? You can deposit developer points for an RCI trade and then actually trade back in into a DVC resort that you could not otherwise use the developer points for? (for example, in my case the developer points have to be "used" by October 3rd--but if I wanted to use them later than that I could deposit into RCI and then use them sometime after October 3rd (within the two-year window of course) if there was availability?

is there somewhere that we can actually see what is "available" on RCI or can we only glean that info through member services?

I would not think so---I don't think the DVC resorts are on the "approved" list.

No, DVC members can't get DVC reservations using the World Passport Collection using DVC points.

In this case, the poster was wanting to make a backup reservation at SSR (using Developer Points), and then trying to secure a World Passport exchange (to another location/resort) where the same Developer Points would be used. My suggestion above was to NOT cancel the SSR reservation until MS/RCI was able to "Hold" the RCI exchange - otherwise they might end up without the SSR reservation and without the exchange they wanted.

I worded that earlier post poorly and included comments about RCI trades into DVC resorts. DVC members cannot use DVC points (Developer Points or otherwise) to exchange into DVC resorts since DVC resorts are not part of the World Passport Collection. I have removed the confusing comments from the earlier post. Thanks for pointing that out! :)

Doc: this prior response from you is what confused me (see underlined portion):

Yes, you could reserve at SSR using Developer Points and then cancel to use them for a World Passport exchange.

"Just be certain that MS is able to "hold" the RCI exchange for you before cancelling the DVC reservation or it's possible to end up with no reservation. RCI does allow a "Hold" for 24 hours for some resorts and until business close for others - so you should be OK if you can find availability at a DVC resort thru RCI. There have certainly been some recently - I saw 3 weeks available from late August thru mid September for 1BRs at SSR yesterday and many others have been able to get other DVC reservations via RCI trades."

It didn't make sense to me that you could use points to "trade in" to RCI and then trade back in to DVC, but I thought (mistakenly) that the above statement seemed to indicate you could.

Yeah, I just realized that I had included comments about recently finding DVC reservations available for RCI owners. RCI will allow it's members to "Hold" a reservation for up to a day - or the end of the current day in some cases (like DVC reservations). DVC members do not have access to DVC resorts thru the World Passport Collection.

I apologize for the confusion. I have corrected the eariler post.
