HELP - Crib climbing toddler

Last week my 23 MO son decided he wasn't happy in his crib anymore & started climbing out. We are "dealing" with this at home right now (crib mattress is on his bedroom floor, and he's in our room 2-4 times/night), but we leave for WDW in less than 2 weeks. I have a crib rental ready to go, but that looks like it's out the window just need to call and cancel. I was already stressed about how to get him to sleep soundly and I do NOT want him in bed with us. He has never slept with us and I don't want to start now!

Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm considering asking for a roll away cot (are they even available, we're staying at OKW??) or ordering a blow-up toddler bed/mattress from One-Step-Ahead.

I'd get a twin size blow up. Useful for years.

Thanks - abbf is where I reserved the crib from, hopefully they will just switch it out for the toddler bed - it's even a little cheaper!

There's a good chance he'll be so tuckered out that he will crash at night and won't wake until morning. A blowup twin or a toddler bed from ABBF should work fine.

You might want to use a crib tent at home, to keep him safely in the crib. See if ABBF can rent you one.

We started putting DS in a big boy bed in March-April of this year (DS was about 16 months old then). We only have the mattress on the bed (the box springs made the bed pretty high). We also have rails on the bed, but I'm going to take those off in the next week or so.
DS has done pretty well in his bed. A few times, he will get out of bed and bang on his door, but DH and I just go in there and put him back to bed.

When we go to Disney, we are staying at Pop. We will have 2 double beds. The resort will provide bed rails, so that is what we are doing. Hopefully, DS will sleep well at Disney.

This may sound thrifty, but what about an inflatable pool raft on the floor? Easy to pack, just inflate before bedtime...

You got more time than my in laws did; hubby, a 44 week gestation baby born holding his head up (OK not born WHILE holding his head up, but immediately after he started it), started getting out of his crib at 9 months.

And then he would HIDE.

Woo, what fun!


Anyway, they switched him to a bed, so obviously that's the best solution for you at home and on your trip!


I'm just going by hubby's info though, I never slept in a crib and neither has our son (family beds all the way!), so your mileage may vary from what he knows about what he was like as a 9 month old.

Have you tried a baby gate across his bedroom door (or easier yet shutting the door)?

What about a ready bed, they have disney themed ones and sell them at target and walmart. They have their own pump that you plug in I think, maybe it's batteries.
I'd get a toddler bed for at home. We just switched my dd to a toddler bed. She turned 2 two weeks ago, the first couple nights were ify but by the third night she was sleeping really well. She also shares a room and we put up a gate just outside the bedroom so she doesn't go wandering around. We also put a hook latch way up high on the doors to go outside when we switched our older child to a toddler bed. My son was 2 1/2 when he moved to the toddler bed but was climbing out occasionally before that. dd never climbed out just thought it was time. Good Luck and Have a great Trip!!!

He has always slept with his door shut - he's quite a big boy & is able to open doors by himself, so shutting the door didn't help. We decided that having him come in our room was a better choice than trapping him in his room & being woken to screaching in the middle of the night.

I had reserved a crib from abbf, I contacted them yesterday & asked if I could switch it to a toddler bed. They made the change no problem.... hopefully he will be so exhausted he will stay in it!

We have a daybed w/ trundle in our playroom. DH moved the trundle into DS room yesterday. DS loved it - he was bouncing on the mattress & pretending to be asleep. We put him in it with rails last night, he gave us a bit of a hard time, but once I told him he was not allowed out of his bed or his room, he cried for a few more minutes then went to sleep. We didn't hear from him again. I'm hoping that each night gets a little easier. I'm still in shock that he listened to me!

My sister just converted my niece (26mos) crib into a daybed. Does your crib do that? My niece can get out of bed whenever she wants, but hasn't learned how to open the door yet.
