The cat got stuck in the garage overnight, and of all places, he chose to use DH's new golf shoes as a place to pee. Brand new Ecco golf shoes-a Christmas present. Any tips on getting the smell out? I'd hate to think they're ruined for good.

Sadly, I would consider them ruined. That smell is nearly impossible to get out of anything.

well - if the consensus is that they are ruined anyway....there are a couple of decent "pee-be-gone" kind of products at pet stores - might as well at least try them....

Good Luck (our cat beast got DH's leather coat sleeve this morning.)

baking soda-- A LOT of baking soda!

Fill a bag full of it and bury the shoes in it and let it sit. You may need to change out the baking soda a few times. I can't promise but it worked for me years ago. I neighbor gave me a Little Tykes slide/climber but it smelled awful. We figured out that her cat had peed on it repeatedly. It took me about a month and a lot of baking soda and covering it and letting it sit and rinsing but it finally stopped smelling and we were actually able to use it indoors.

You should also try some of the commercial products available. Like Ms. LeFever says, if they are ruined then it won't hurt to try anything.

Urine be gone, or similar product that has enzymes, do not use anything until you can get a bottle. They sell it at Petsmart, Target, Ace the enzymes do something, I forget what, but if you use another product first it won't work.
I had to use it a month or so ago on leather and it did work. Repeat the application a few times and the odor will be gone not masked.

picture golfing and getting a tad hot and the odor once sweat hits the urine.....:scared1:

I am so sorry for your loss, may they RIP

on discovery channels pitchmen with billy hayes they did a product called what odor.
look that up

supposed to get rid of skunk etc, the episode was pretty interesting

1. Rinse or wipe the shoes off to get rid of any urine that hasn't set in.
2. Go to the pet store TODAY, DO NOT WAIT, and buy some pet enzymatic cleaner - just the straight enzyme stuff - pour over the shoes, douse it. Wait. (This stuff will not work on really old smells, but on smells that are less than a month old, it will work.)

Smell will dissappear.

If there is any lingering odor, repeat. Do this about twice, then use vinegar (the product of last resort).

I have successfully used enzyme on sneakers, sandals and dress shoes, (I have a cat with behavioral issues ) so you should be fine.
