Just noticed that some of my pictures I d/l to my laptop on my last trip do not seem viewable. They look the normal size file wise and are Jpegs but I can't seem to view them in any program. I am hoping someone knows of a repair or a program to fix those files.

I tried searching here but didn't find anything.

Please advise

Kodak easyshare dx7630 and Photoshop and microsoft's built in viewer

I didn't dbl check them when D/l my card to the laptop. They look the correct size and the file shows them as a JPEG. With a demo of a program I can salvage some but not all of them, but of course it's just a demo so it doesnt give me a usable copy to work with.

Any freeware out there that might help or what is the best program out there to fix them.

What exactly happened? Was the inital D/L to the Laptop bad or is it something with the memory card? Should I reformat the card just in case?

If they are still on the card have you tried downloading them again? Did you use a card reader or the camera to transfer the files?

Danielle,

Good question! I thought I'd chime in with a quick story.

The other day I took video of my DD's play at school. It was only about 20 minutes long, so the S2 IS handled it pretty well. I tried to stop the video at 5 minute intervals, let the camera wirte the file quickly and then start shooting again. One section of the video became too long and the camera stopped itself to write the file. Anyways, when I got home, I downloaded them using the USB cable from my camera directly to the computer (as I always do) and that file that the camera stopped itself on would not load at all. I tried using Microsoft camera and scanner downloader and photoshop elements 5.o downloader and had no luck at all.

However, when I plugged the card into the reader on my printer, it worked fine. I don't know what caused this to happen, but as I said at the beginning, good question because it can certainly make a difference, I guess.

I ended up D/ling each night with a card reader and would look at the first bunch in each folder I had set up for that days pictures. In retrospect I should have made sure I saw all the files on the laptop. Hopefully I didn't lose too many. At least we took a lot of photopass pics to fill in the gaps I appear to be missing so far. Hope I will be able to fix most of them.

It looks like I can salvage some of them with the proper program. Any suggestions as to which one to use, there looks to be quite a few? Any freeware out there to try first?

Some other pictures I can see seem to be half one image on top and half one another image on the bottom when you view it. However if you look at the thumbnail of the file it looks like the complete full normal image. Weird.

From what I can gather it doesn't seem to be one card that is bad as I seem to have images from all the days. Can part of a card be corrupted?

Thanks for all the help with this issue, let me know if you need more info from my end.

Definetly a learning experience for me. It won't happen again.

I used " Recover My Files"

to recover my pictrues from a hard drive that had been formatted and had windows reinstalled. the program cost me 70 dollars but was well worth it since I'm talking 0ver 10,000 pictures..

Did you format the card each night after downloading? It sounds to me like the card may be corrupted or wasn't reformatted correctly.

No reformats were done, I just erased the photos when the disk was inside the camera. Seems weird that it is just spots of the disk that seem to be messed up. Hopefully I will recover most of them.

Someone else can comment with better technical details. But, as I understand it, unless you format the card, the files are not really "erased" just the directory to them.

I believe if you erase the card then fill it again the revious days pics are gone.

try www.download.com for file recovery freeware and not so free ware. ALso reviews. I know there are two or three free versions that always get reccomended but I can never remember the names. sorry

When I use my cardreader I can't pull up the photos, looking at them in the camera shows them there just fine. I am now using the Easyshare Dock and seeing what will happen. Will let you know the results of the two disks I still have remaining.

So I saved some, but what about those I don't have on disk still that are D/L to the laptop? Any ideas what is going on?
