should I just buy this lens... http://www.walmart.com/ip/Canon-Efs-Image-Stabilizer-Lens/9722035

I am looking to take better night pictures (i.e. fireworks, night portraits witout flash, indoor photos)...already plan on getting a tripod and a wireless shutter release. I LOVE to take pictures but am COMPLETELY camera illiterate lol. I have a Canon Rebel XT right now.

Leaving for Disney World in 32 days...HELP PLEASE!!!

You have the camera (XT), now you just need a little knowledge to be dangerous in low-light. IS lenses are good, but not the total solution. Likewise, I'd stay away from the small sensor Fuji. Your DSLR will outperform it in low-light if you know what you're doing.

Google around more and see if any tutorials help out. Practice a bit at night before your trip.

Well I also need a bigger zoom cause the lens I have now is only efs 18-55mm so I can't get any close ups, say like from the train station on main street to the castle. it just comes out like normal distance...am I making any sense lol....plus the ISO max is only 1600 does that make a difference??? I have tried many times to take night pics, but it seems like the shutter stays open FOREVER and they always come out super blurred...I know I definitely want to get the tripod and a shutter release. Thanks for any and all the information!!!!

The tripod and shutter release will make a world of difference in better night photos.

Each picture taking situation will require a different approach. Nighttime photos of static objects will be helped with the tripod and shutter release allowing you to use a lower ISO.

Want photos of something moving at night (like the Main Street Electrical parade or Fantasmic)? You need a wider open aperture and the highest ISO you can get so you can get a faster shutter speed. The lens you have and the one you are considering are good lenses, but they are not considered "fast" lenses. The cheapest way to get there is with this lens at about $100:

If you have other specific scenarios, post them here and others can help. But it's very situational.

Definitely stick with the DLSR though.

I've got the Rebel XT and my daughter has the Fuji S1000, an older version of the S1800. I was surprised that the Fuji performed better in some low light situations when I had the kit lens or an entry level tele zoom on the Rebel. That said... the Fuji can't beat the XT with a fast lens (like the 50mm f/1.8). And that's where the real benefit of DSLR is.... Being able to get the right lens for the job.

Just oredered that lens...can't wait for it to come so I can take some practice shots...going out tomorrow to get my tripod and shutter release. Do I need a higher MM lens to get a closer shot/zoom??? Target has a 55-300mm lens for $199.00 is that a good price?? I would just need that mostly for like day shots.
