HELP!!!!!!My dryer "HOSE" is the new home to a bird and her babies. She has been here for 3-4 weeks perhaps longer
I noticed my dryer wasn't drying properly a few weeks ago and discontinued use. I had removed and wired
my vent in early Mar after another nest was made in vent.. and thought that took care of it..... unbeknownst to me she knocked out the wire mesh
and apparently built another.....this time down inside my vent hose.(about 4 1/2 feet long to top).....it is apparently packed 2/3 way to top with nesting
material and the baby birds were born 2 1/2 weeks or so ago I heard a faint peep and has seemed to grow louder.. But in last week a different sound not as chirpy and not as loud. Has she possibly taken some out or could some have died in there.....It hasn't been used since their birth and for a couple of weeks before...

....I thought and perhaps still there are a few babies......I cut a small window 2x2 to see if I could see babies I see one of something could be mother sitting on nest...but large eyes looked at me.and I am fearful to cut a larger hole and she flapped up and out of there...There is an odor to this hose and it seems to be in my dryer also...And I am concerned for sanitary reasons yet.I am concerned for the birds and want to get them out as humanely as possible as it appears she cant....or won't. Are they just not ready at 2 1/2 weeks or perhaps a little older.. Should I wait another week......It is time consuming to take laundry to a friends to dry and I want my bathroom sanitary...I certainly can't allow her to build another nest I need my dryer... HELP!!!!

Welcome to the disboards.

My advice is to call animal control, your local SPCA or just a kind hearted appliance service person.

Do you have a Disney-related question? Odd that you registered today and posted about nothing to do with Disney.

If you move the nest then the mother bird (depending on species) might abandon it, babies and all.

I think most baby birds leave the nest within 2-3 weeks. Maybe try googling dryer vent cleaning to have a professional help you. I think it is very nice that you have not been using your dryer but the bird may lay more eggs in that nest as soon as these babies are out.
I have a nest with baby birds in the wreath on my front door so we have not been able to go out that door for weeks. I am over it! As soon as the babies are out of there that nest is coming down!

Hi, I used to work in wildlife rehab and I can tell you what I would do. I’m trying to picture this vent situation and I’m not completely sure what you’re describing. If the babies will be able to get themselves out once they’re ready to fledge, I would leave them be and then close off the vent once they’re gone. If they’re going to be unable to get out, then I would intervene. I would remove them once they hit the fledgling stage — eyes open, fully feathered, short-feathered wings and tails, looking like miniature versions of the adult. Place them outside the vent in some nearby bushes, some area with decent cover. Mom bird will continue to care for them once they’re on the ground and the babies will shelter in the lower branches of bushes. (The idea that birds abandon their young because of human scent is a myth. 100% not true.) This is how they would manage normally upon hopping out of the nest before being fully able to fly.

If you need them out but they’ve not yet reached the fledgling stage then call a local wildlife rehab to take them.

Also, if you're handling the birds, wear a pair of gloves. We had some fall out of their nest once and DH put them back, but not without having to deal with the mites that came with the birds and the nest.

Also, once the birds are gone, be sure to clean out the vent thoroughly and block it off or you'll have another family moving in next year.

By the way, are you in an area that is new or has very few trees? We had trouble with birds trying to nest in our vents when our house was brand new, but after a few years and a few trees being planted, there was no more trouble.

We have plastic screen boxes that go over the exterior of our vents to prevent this from happening. Something to look into once this is resolved.

Maybe instead of posting on the DIS, she should have posted a Tweet...
