HELP!! Best Resort Off Property for Best Price?

Hi - our friends are headed to WDW for 2 days (Dec 21 - Dec 22). They need a nice, low priced hotel to stay in for one night. They want to stay off Disney property since they have a car. There will be 2 adults and 2 young children (4 yrs. and 5 yrs.). They only need one room and would like to be "near" WDW - a drive time of about 15 minutes or so towards the parks. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

There are a couple of serviceable places on west 192. That puts them about 5 minutes from WDW property (AK).

Holiday Inn Nikki Bird, Summer's Bay (the Inn, not the resort) Sleep Inn, and a few others. Some of the places in that little strip of 192 are pretty wretched so be a little cautious.

Alternatively, but still within the 15 min. distance, a bit further in the easterly direction on 192 (but still considered west 192) is a pretty basic, but absolutely serviceable Howard Johnson's. It is billed as the largest in the area.

They really sohouldn't have too much trouble finding something in that area and for a reasonable price.

They could also look near DTD (Lake Buena Vista). Prices will be a bit higher usually, but there are a couple of budget places like Comfort Inn. One night would be ok, I guess.

Our last trip to Orlando was a budget affair; price was more important than location. We used Hotwire and got 3 nights at the Wyndham Palace for between $50 and $60 (I think it's offered now on Hotwire for $74). The location was great, but it was hard for me to be in Disney World without staying in a Disney hotel.

We also spent our first night at a new Crown Plaza hotel near Universal Studios that was around $40. That was a great deal!
On Hotwire, you can specify the area in which you want to stay, and you can view the ammenities of the various hotels. I like it better than Priceline.

I would highly recommend the Best Western Lake Buena Vista. I have stayed there many time before, and it's a nice hotel for the price. They have a bar/lounge on the 18th floor with a wonderful view of PI, Illuminations, and MK fireworks.

Also, all the rooms have balconies, so if you request a room facing Disney on the higher floors, you will have a wonderful view of the shows as well, and it's also awesome to wake up in the morning and sit on the balcony with a cup of coffee and watch Disney "wake up".

Plus they a nice restaurant with good breakfast buffet to start off your day. And you can get waffles in the shape of Mickey.

For transportation, they have buses that run every 30 minutes to the parks (separate bus to each park). You can also walk to DTD, which is a nice relaxing trail, but they also have buses that run as well.

Send them to the all-stars. I dont reccommend non-disney at all.

I have heard wonderful things about the Holiday Inn Family Suites on the mousesavers.com site. Kids under 12 eat free w/paying adult .. all meals. Breakfast for everyone is free. You can also check www.hotelkingdom.com Very nice to deal with. Good luck

The Courtyard DTD was running a 2003 special for $20.03 You have to call the hotel directly and ask for the rate. It might be worth a try to see if they have any availability.
