Help a USA DISer?

Mom and I are going to spend 7 days in the UK this September. We will be in Scotland for 3 and 1/2 days and England for 3 and 1/2 days. I thought this board would be a great place to seek assistance on choosing restaurants in the UK.

Would you please provide some suggestions on really good, reasonably priced restaurants or pubs in Edinburgh and London?

I don't know Edinbrugh at all but live fairly near to London. I must admit that we often eat out at TGI Fridays in London (they have 2 locations one is between Picadilly Circus and Leicester Square, not sure where the other is but I think it's near Covent Garden). For a good cheap lunch Pizza Hut (we often go to the one near Charing Cross/Trafalgar Square) do an all you can eat buffet for about £6 a head.

My favourite more traditionally English restaurant in London is Porters in Covent Garden. Here's a link to their website

Hi...my mum works for the US Red Cross at an Air Base and often takes new Airforce personnel and there families out to an English pub more so for the "Sunday lunch" as its a better point of view of the English way of life than a typical restraunt.... she gets asked loads of time and i dont think she has ever not had a Sunday lunchtime to herself in ages!!!

I suppose it depends on where you are staying in London. There are lots of great neighborhood places, and not nearly the amount of chains that are everywhere here. There are a few though, and someone from London can correct me on spelling, but an Italian chain called Carlucio's, which has a bunch of locations, is pretty good. And for sandwiches and salads, Pret a Manger, which are almost as many as Starbucks. The only place I've seen them in the US is NYC.
But again, if you have a better idea where you are staying I'm sure there are many who can give you some more answers.

I agree with Orchid. Go for a traditional English Pub and get a Sunday Roast Dinner. Wetherspoons is a good choice. Nice food at a reasonable price. http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/pubs/

I've never been to Edinburgh, but i can help with London.

Porters is also a good choice. I have eaten there with my parents and their steak, guiness and mushroom pie is amazing as is there Honey Roast Chicken.

TGI Fridays is lovely. http://www.tgifridays.co.uk/. My favourite is the Jack Daniels Ribs.

The Rainforest Cafe is good too. http://www.therainforestcafe.co.uk/

There is also a Pancake house in London called "My Old Dutch" I used to go with my parents when i was little. They used to make HUGE pancakes. Haven't been for a while but i used to love it there! http://www.myolddutch.com/default.asp

Thanks for all of your help! We are staying at the Dorchester with DVC points for two nights. I got reservations before they took it away from the Concierge Collection. We will have day passes for the Tube, so we can pretty much go anywhere. When we are in Edinburgh, we will be staying in the Mayfield Gardens area.

I really like eating at wagamama, if you do a search you'll be able to find their locations before you arrive in the UK. I also agree you need to find a great pub which serves great food or fish and chips. If you want a very English experience how about afternoon tea at Claridges ? you will need to book this in advance but I've heard excellent reports about it.

As for Edinburgh I've heard Abstract is supposed to be very nice, a great atmosphere with excellent food at reasonable prices for a two course meal. Harvey Nichols also has a restaurant and if I remember right the views are fantastic ... you can have lunch here as well as an evening meal.

The restaurant 'Sticky Fingers' off Kensington High Street (nearest tube stop) is nice, it's owned by one of the Rolling Stones Also if you like vegetarian food the Cranks Restaurant in Covent Garden is fab, more of a lunch than dinner place though.

Hi,

George street in Edinburgh had lots of very nice eating places and bars.

Also try the High street,There are nice little pub like places.
