I need help - I havent done hardly any Christmas shopping yet - just picked up a few things here and there - my daughters list was very simple this year and my hubby and I want to get her one nice gift like we always do... Shes been wanting a DSI or a 3DS - she already has a regular DS and has had it for 3 or 4 years... Which of the two would you suggest I was thinking about the 3ds but when reading about it I am wondering if the DSI would be better for her and allow her to play all her current DS games... THOUGHTS PLEASE~~~~

so go for the one that has the better deal. :thumbsup2

the 3d games can only be played on the 3ds though...and mario land 3d is supposed to be great.

I assume she is older, but I heard on the radio that the 3D feature of the 3DS should be turned off via parental controls for children younger than 6. I haven't heard very good things about the 3DS. I thought the price came WAY down too since the demand wasn't that great.

Did you hear why they recommend that? I'm just wondering the reasoning for that since we got my 5 year old a 3DS for Christmas.

There's a warning on the outside of the box (or one of the game boxes? Can't remember) that says it can cause damage to vision in kids 6 and under.

I've also heard, even for older kids, they shouldn't play 3D for more than 30 minutes at a time.

Go for the 3DS. It plays all her old DS games, has the internet/camera features of the DSi, and will be technologically relevant for much longer.

As far as the 3D, I imagine your eyes will get tired looking at it forever. I'm not sure there is anything to the permanent damage for your eyes thing (haven't heard anyone quoting a study so a bit of proactivity on Nintendo's part combined with fearmongering?) but I suppose it's possible. At any rate most people are a little tired after a 2 hour 3D movie so it's nice to have the slider so you can take a break from it if you want, or if you are concerned about your kids and 3D, or if you just don't like the 3D effects.

If you have netflix get the 3ds. I have 1 son that has one and another that is getting one for Christmas.

One thing I love is that you can download games and not have to worry about losing them. Our 4 year old has deleted a couple of them and all we had to do was reload.

I do wish there was a better way to turn off the 3d part. Its too easy for the little one to turn it on again.

My 12 yr old played a demo one at Walmart, and while I was watching her, I began to feel nauseated. The graphics are very clear, but I don't think I could play one. The 3D glasses you can get now for the 3D setup for your tv makes me nauseous too. BUT, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the 3D at Disney! PhilHarmagic is my FAVORITE!

Well, since my biggest fear in life is going blind I wanted no parts of a game system that has the possibility of messing with my DD's eyesight. We chose the DSi XL. If she liked Mario the bundle with the game is the same price as just the DS.

Nintendo has stated that no future first-party games will be developed for the DS, just the 3DS. Get the 3DS and turn off the 3D feature.

A couple things. First, I got the 3DS for $105 (including tax) last week at Target. By far the best price I've seen, but the deal ended on Saturday.

Second, the store video says you can use parental controls to turn off the 3D, or the slider. Third, I talked to my eye doctor about the 3D, and he said while it may cause headaches and make you feel nauseous, it's very unlikely to cause permanent eye damage. His own son has one.

I did a lot of research before choosing the system. But, the 3DS has a camera, streams Netflix, can download games, plays old DS games as well as the 3DS games, and has a toggle controller to move. The battery life is less than the other DS devices, though.

THIS. THIS. THIS! :)
and yeah, you can always turn off the 3d. and it plays just fine, we got my daughter one, 2 3d games, and a few for the ds, not to mention i have a ton of ds games alreay, and since they work on the 3ds were set :)
i am hoping that they mak ea 3dsXL here soon, that screen is just awesome :)

Deffinately the 3ds. And it can be turned off. Son plays it in both modes. A few minutes to look at the neat effects, turns it off for awhile. It really isn't a big deal for us. The system itself has many other really neat features.:)

I am debating between these also. My son has a dsi xl and I heard the 3ds can not do pictochat or flip notes. Does anyone that has one let me know if the 3ds can do either of those. Thanks

We are also a big fan of the 3ds. DS9 played his DS lite til the one hinge broke. Got the 3ds this past May for his birthday. He enjoys the online features (downloading games + streaming netflix) as much as, if not more than, the 3d element. We were 'Ambassadors' (read-suckers who paid the initial price) so we have gotten in on the 20 free downloadable games they offered when the price dropped. That said, he really enjoys the 3ds and plays both his old ds games and the two newer 3ds titles that he has picked up. :thumbsup2

The 3DS is the current Nintendo handheld and has a better processor, memory, etc. The DSi is part of the old DS line. Based on conversations I've had with others, not enough people realize this. Nintendo should have named it DS2 or something so people would understand it's not just a DS with a few bells and whistles (like the DSi), it's a far more powerful machine.

And yes, the 3D can be turned off, but it is highly unlikely to cause vision problems in older children even if it's left on.

A successor to PictoChat for the Nintendo 3DS has been announced by Nintendo via a streaming conference on October 21, 2011. The successor is called Swapnote (in North America) or Nintendo Letter Box (in Europe), and it will be available as a free download starting December 2011. This application will allow users to send 3D pictures, sound, and scribbled messages to registered friends via either StreetPass or SpotPass.
