I am a first time mom and I have a 2 month old that seems to play with her nipple on her bottle rather than drink it. She has used the same nipples since the hospital but seems to get frusterated with them and play with them more than eat it. It gets frusterating because I know that she is hungry but sometimes she tends not to finish because she gets mad and gives up. What should I do?? I have tried two diiferent kinds of nipples but they have been the same two since birth. Any ideas because I have no clue????

Thanks

What size is the opening in the nipple? It may be that she is not getting the flow fast enough and gets frustrated. Newborns tend to start off with those lower flow nipples, so if yours came from the hospital then that may be the culprit. I'd try nipples with a little larger opening to see if that solves the problem. Good luck!

Is the hole too small for her now? She may not be getting enough out of the nipple or having to work too hard to get it now. Just a thought. I'd probably start trying other nipple brands to see if any work for her.

Good luck! (I'd also talk to the pediatrician about it).

and check and make sure the hole hasn't closed. sometimes with washing and wear the holes seem to close.
but I do agree she probably needs a bigger hole

I agree with the other posters, check the hole. Most companies have two rates of flow - fast or slow. You can even get cereal nipples for some bottles. My GDD is using the Playtex Ventair bottles and uses both the slow and the fast flow nipples. She is 4 months old and is also getting cereal, so uses cereal nipples. Playtex does not make a cereal nipple for the Ventair, but my DD was able to find a different brand that fits the Ventair bottles.

Also congratulations, I am loving being a grandma especially since I get to take care of my GDD two days a week. (They live with us, but I get her to myself on Monday's & Wednesday's).

Yep, agree about the flow from the nipples' holes. Replace the nipples anyway after that length of time. Just to be safe and sure. If she is pulling or chewing on them they may have small tears anyway.

Did you know that the ring you place the nipple in and then screw onto the bottle acts as a flow valve? If you make it tight it causes the milk to release very slow. If you loosen it a little it will speed up. For a new baby you should get a drop a second so she would need a lot more than that. Turn you bottle upside down and check the flow. Both the nipple hole and the tightness of the ring can cause her frustration.

I agree with everyone else, slow flow was the first thing that I thought of.

DD is 7w and she is still on the level 1 nipples from Dr. Brown's. It takes us 25-30 mins to finish a 6oz bottle. Sometimes I will try a level 2 nipple but it almost chokes her. So she's not ready for those yet.

I have noticed that Dr. Brown's nipples are tiny circular holes, whereas the VentAire bottles I have are Xs. The Xs always choke her, even the Age 1s. So if you have some of those, try circular ones.

I remember those Level 2 Dr. Browns....EVERY SINGLE TIME I'd feed DS with one of those, I'd get about 15 drops of formula on his face/eyes :rotfl2:

Ha! And then the level 3s. They get pretty big. It seems crazy that one day level 3 will be no big deal. awwwww...:lovestruc

You're right....today is my DD's 10th birthday and I can't believe my baby is 10.

A couple weeks ago, I was grocery shopping and was looking at the dates on the Butternut bread. The "good until" date was October 10, 2010. I got all verklepmt, because I'm used to seeing 10-01-00 and it just really hit home that my girl is 10.

Anyhoooo....move along people, nothing to see here.
