Helmets for skiing

DS (14) is going on a trip with his high school ski club to Okemo in Vermont this weekend. DS is about 5 feet tall (hasn't hit that growth spurt yet) and not too much of a daredevil. He has skied about 5 or 6 times before and does pretty well. He does not want to wear a helmet as I have never made him wear one before and his friends won't be wearing helmets. I recently read an article that said that people who wore helmets then felt they were indestructible and often had more injuies than those without helmets.

Do you make your kids wear helmets when skiing? Any thoughts on this subject would be appreciated.

I can tell you that in all the time I went skiing, I don't think I've ever seen someone wear a helmet. I think with the way I fell I wouldn't have even thought to wear one either. Most injuries I have had/seen have been to the arms/legs and I am not sure how much a helmet would helped with anything... especially knowing that the injury that made me stop skiing permanently was to my knee. I could see the point of a person wearing one thinking they were indestructible, but honestly have no clue how true that is. So I guess I don't see the point of a helmet for standard down hill skiing and I just hope your DS has fun on his trip

a helmet for skiing and snowboarding.....I am not sure if it is a requirement but two kids in the last ten years have died from head injuries at a ski resort close to us......if kids horse around on the slopes they are given a warning and if that doesn't work.....they are out .....I just called my daughter who works some evenings at the ski resort and she said......the MAJORITY of the kids wear them....not a requirement....but they do wear them....
