Hell's Kitchen: The Contestants are GRRRROSSSS

Where do they find these people? Half of them are all sweaty and tatted up and rough, and they're all chain smokers. It's like that every season.

I thought it was common knowledge that food industry workers are known to be heavy smokers?

also it's pretty rude to judge someone by their tattoos, especially in 2012

Having worked 'the back of the house' for many years, I can tell you it's not pretty. Many kitchens are dirty, many of the chefs aren't sparkly either. It's not on purpose, mind you, but when you get slammed (term for a fully booked and then some night) you need to make sure the food goes out, not if the kitchen is clean or your hair is perfect. Read Bourdain's book Kitchen Confidential and you'll really get an eye-opening experience.

I agree. Fantastic book. Lots of judgments in this thread, but it is the DIS. ;) You have to be a strong personality, nearly crazy person to make it in a kitchen.

Christine on MasterChef is amazzzzing. Blind and cooks 10,000 times better than me.

Every season "Hell's Kitchen" has a few unsavory characters and I wonder who the heck PICKS these people:confused3 I find this group particularly nasty with just a few exceptions. I wouldn't want most of them to make toast for me! And God knows, none seem executive chef material with managerial responsibilities:confused:

I totally agree with you! There isn't one of them that we are actually rooting for to win!

Wow, OP making a lot of assumptions about people aren't you.

I think the OP would be very shocked if she walked into some kitchens! I don't eat out to experience what the kitchen looks like, all I want is my steak cooked to order and my fries hot :thumbsup2.

Also, I've never watched this show in my life - but I imagine there's a reason it's called Hell's Kitchen, and is meant to exaggerated the un-pretty and challenging parts of work in the back of the house, with an ornery chef who expects perfection?

Maybe the OP should be watching "Princess Kitchen" where everyone is made up and glistening with fairy dust...

Or basically anything on the Food Network.

We really enjoy Masterchef, but the other Fox Gordon Ramsay shows are really irritating. If you ever watch his shows on BBC, you will see that it's not a "Gordon Ramsay" thing so much, as the producers of the Fox shows. The condescending sound affects and narration are making the shows pretty much unwatchable.

This season of HK is particularly bad as far as the unappealing contestants. Tattoos aren't a problem. It's the people's personalities. Kimmy is an embarrasment to Memphis, and we all know she stayed out of the blindfold challenge because she was scared, and Tiffany is a disgusting person, both from how she carries herself, and what comes out of her mouth. Robyn is also one that makes me want to turn the channel.

Don't even get me started on Kimmie and Clemenza smoking at their weights.

They only brings these "chefs" on for the controversy that they will cause. I have a hard time believing that this the the cream of the crop out of those that applied. :rotfl:

I can imagine that there are a lot of real chefs sitting at home, ones that applied to be on this show, and they are left sitting there, scratching their heads trying to figure out how these imbeciles got picked over them.

I used to like this show, when it first started, but it has turned into a joke. I would much rather watch Top Chef, where they actually treat the chefs with a bit of dignity and the chefs know how to cook.

:rotfl2: I used to watch it when it first started but not anymore. Sandra Lee and her 'tablescapes'. Really?? I also hate the way they treated their real stars, like Emeril and Mario, basically just telling them to 'shove off'. I do like a couple of shows on The Cooking Channel but mainly stay with what inspired me at a young age to be in the kitchen, the shows on PBS.

Yeah, some of them are just unlikable because of their personalities. Robyn just has a very aggressive demeanor and Tiffany was just terrible.

That's not the same as being gross. Its a cooking competition with real people. They aren't there to be dolled up. Too many "reality" shows have people in full make-up, professionally styled. The people on this show aren't. They look how real people look.

I agree. The first seasons were good and they have gotten progressively worse in their choices of chefs. It seemed they would throw in a couple of contentious people, but this year the whole staff is bad.

I've been waiting fo Clemenza to have a heart attack since the first show.

We've met Chef Brock (winner a few seasons ago) a few times at Party for the Senses and he's a class act.

I love the ones that say they are 'Executive Chef'. Executive Chef at McDonalds maybe, but certainly not at any real establishment that you have to get your hands dirty and get in and cook. Quite a bit of what they do cook, with the exception of Ramsay's Wellington, is cooking 101, like pasta, potatoes, fish, etc. I think the contestants of MasterChef blow away those on Hell's Kitchen.

Tiffany was just filthy. She skeeved me out.

If I had to pick someone to win, it would be Christina. She's the least objectionable of the lot, in my opinion... but it's been hard to find someone to pull for this season.

Yeah, she's the cleanest.

We've done Chef's Tables at nice restaurants. There was an argument once with some pans being moved about noisily, but the chefs/cooks were all very clean and nice. We met some out at a bar after one meal, and a couple did smoke, but they were not vile, filthy folk like on Hell's Kitchen. It makes me wonder what Gordon Ramsay's habits are like.

For the record, I've also spent hours over a hot grill and a hot fryer in my youth and lately at volunteer dinners. I've never sweated in the food or seen anyone sweat in the food. That isn't a typical part of the dining experience.:)

Good to know..all the sweating makes me never want to eat out again however I have been convincing myself the heat they are dealing with is complicated by all the lights and such associated with being on TV and that is why they are so sweaty.

MY BFF is a cook/chef in a retirement Community. She says she could never work for Ramsey she said something to effect of she'd tell him to get lost. She is a very nice girl, says yes it gets hot in kitchen and sweat happens but that's why you have bandana or something to wipe you face. She is one of few who doesn't smoke at her place of employment. I believe she only has 1 tat and it's on her lower back so I doubt most coworkers know it exsit.
I could see her cooking at V+A or the local steakhouse.

You probably don't want to do that! DH and I saw kitchen staff at our favorite restaurant when the power went off and everyone had to leave. They were out back smoking and we could see them as we drove away. We were horrified and couldn't believe they were hired to work in what was considered a "really nice place" to eat...or ANY place to eat for that matter. Stay oblivious...it's probably the only way you'll be able to eat.

After working a few places I think the "chefs" are pretty close to what you will find in alot of kitchens.

The kitchens I have been in are not filled with normal people! Its hot, its hard work, long hours and you put up with alot of crud. A busy dinner service can be insane, even worse if the guy next to you is hung over and stinks! Not my idea of fun and I think I am deaf to all the cursing. But talent is talent no matter who the person is or how strange they are!
