Hello everyone,
Just wanted to take a minute to thank Pete and the entire Podcast Team for the prayers and well wishes on the Podcast. I live at the epicenter. I was VERY LUCKY and had no structural damage. I lost a lot of things, but considering what could have been lost, I am not the least bit heartbroken about them. A majority of the severe damage was to a lot of historical buildings in the heart of downtown. Nobody was killed as a result of the earthquake and just under 200 injuries, and 2 of them were severe injuries but thankfully, they will both survive.
As a California native, earthquakes are expected. The difference is this one was extremely close to the surface and the shaking was much more violent than the one that was a 6.5 in 1989. The quake was around 330am, which thankfully, all of the downtown businesses were empty. There were multiple roof collapses inside restaurants and bricks that fell onto empty parking lots. About 90% of the businesses have reopened and reconstruction has already begun.
Unfortunately, there were at least 20 water main breaks causing thousands of gallons of precious water to flow out. If you haven't heard, CA is in a severe drought with 3 years of dry winters. A week later, the water mains have been repaired.
