I am posting this as a peaceful response to loco4dis' diatribe on the conservative thread http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=28202440#post28202440
post #1538 and to the unspoken (or spoken, I didn't read much more of the thread) stereotypes conservatives have of democrats.

I did not want to post on that thread because I don't really belong there, but was lead there by a link.
I am a life long democrat, the daughter of a Democratic senator and a republican mother. In his (her?) post loco4dis describes his view of the "average Obama supporter". His post is then lauded by 2 more posters. As I consider myself to be an "average" Obama supporter, I was deeply hurt by this post. I call myself average because I do not think I am better than others, just a woman living her life.

I am not a "sheep", and though I wouldn't deem myself a TRUE intellectual, I will say that I am pretty intellegent. I am a voracious reader, and have actually gotten through "more than two sentences of Obama's "plan".

I am not "aimless", not "soulless", nor does my "life lack meaning or spirituality". I am not hunting for "god" (his small g), as I have known him since I was a baby. I am a practicing Catholic, a religious education teacher, a PTA mom, a loving and true wife. I am a mother to four wonderful children who enrich my life on a daily basis.

I am moral, ethical, decent, honorable, and a former boss once told me that I have a servant's heart.

loco4 dis:" The number one reason they hate Sarah Palin is because she is happy, fulfilled, gloriously at peace with the life she has built. Liberals never get to feel like that."

I am a liberal, and feel like this on a daily basis. I also do not hate Sarah Palin, just don't agree with her.

I am a Democrat because of the way I was raised. We were a wealthy family. My father always helped out those in need. With money, with jobs, with material things that were needed, but also when they needed someone with a voice that people would listen to.
Obama is that voice today.
I don't need him to speak for me, but for those who so desperately need it.
My father was a great God loving man. When he helped those in need he didn't turn around and call them lazy, useless losers. He did what Jesus would have done; helped without judging the reason for the situation.

I am not a socialist, but I do believe the rich (especially those that claim to be Christians) should help the poor. We aren't going to go broke paying extra taxes to help fund programs for the needy. I may not get the 4 week vacay in Disney, but one of my fellow human beings wont starve today, and may even get a much needed education to better themselves.

I know this has been long, but here are some reasons why I am a democrat and what I believe the Democratic party stands for:

I believe in Diplomacy over military action.

I believe that stem-cell research should be legal because so many people could benefit.

I believe in the separation of church and state, one of the tenets that our country was founded on. Which leads me to my next reason.

I believe that abortion should be legal. Yes, I am a devout Catholic, but since the pro-life movement is based on religious beliefs and our country has the freedom of religion, I am pro-choice.

I want our education system out of the No Child left behind act. Vouchers are not helping improve the worst schools, they do help some kids, but not all. Our teachers should be able to teach more than just what is on "The Test".

There are more reasons, but let me wrap this up.

My liberal life is happy and bright. And though most of my friends and family are also democrats, I rarely run into someone like loco4dis has described. I don't live my life spewing hate and believing that only a certain political party has the lock on rich and rewarding lives.

My life is not a mirage, I am fully vested in reality.

Thanks for sharing. I really can't imagine being "deeply hurt" or feeling so personally judged based on some words on a message board, but if it motivated you to clarify to strangers how you want them to view you, then I hope it helps.:)

Why would you be deeply hurt by a post from someone you don't even know, seems a little odd, oh well ...

:thumbsup2

And yet, they still bash...Now you can't get your feelings hurt without being jumped on. :sad2:

OP--You very eloquently said what I have been thinking ever since I read that vicious and malicious post.
Thank you.

Really? You don't think comparing Democrats to Nazis is hurtful? There's no need to be condescending.

I hadn't read the post until now--I stay far away from the conservative thread for this very reason. I had really hoped to never read such vile, rude opinions as are expressed on the link on the DIS boards.

What she said!

And if McCain can be deeply hurt by accusations, then why can't a poster here?

Being "deeply hurt" may seem a little over the top to you, but I am a passionate person who is also suffering from PMS:rotfl2:
Feeling personally about things is what I believe leads most people to post on this board in the first place, so that comment really didn't bother me.

Very interesting. You believe in separation of Church and State but then say that Rich Practicing Christians should pay high taxes to support the poor. So it would seem that you are using the basis of Religion (caring for your fellow man) as the reason I should be compelled to pay taxes to the Government. But then you can't use the caring for your fellow man (or baby) as a reason to outlaw abortion?

hmm..comparing Democrats to Nazis? I'll have to let my Grandpa know that even though he was held in a POW camp in WWII, because he's a democrat, he's obviously a Nazi!

Vile, rude, and ignorant.

There's no need to assume I was being condescending.:confused3 Just because I wouldn't be deeply hurt doesn't mean someone else can't. If I was so sensitive, I would walk away. So this poster takes opinions of strangers on a message board to heart and wanted to paint a picture of who she is. So what?? I can't reasonably comment on it?? Alrighty then.:rotfl:

One of the most well thought out posts I've read here in a long time, from one Democrat to another, I couldn't agree with you more.

Democrat here - and proud to be a liberal.

I am a smart, married, woman with deep convictions.

I believe the US is a good country...but not perfect. It has flaws.

We cannot shout to the world about our superiority when we have
- millions of children in poverty
- millions of uninsured
- infant mortality rate worse than many countries
- believe attacking a nation is ok
- believe in death penalty - along with such great company as China, Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia
- believe in religious control of what I do in my home, or with my body
- believe love is wrong if people are the same sex

It is appalling that as one of the wealthiest nations we cannot take care of our poor, our elderly, our children.

The top 10% in America owns 71% of all wealth! I am in that top 10% and I can give to those less fortunate.

My morals want me to make the US better for all - not just the rich.

OP :grouphug:

And as a Jewish Democrat, can I ever be a Nazi? Ridiculous and typical GOP behavior (by some). I have also had the fortune of knowing some kind Reps. Maybe it's easier to be nasty and hateful online? :confused3 Unfortunately, it's common practice and trickles down from the top of their party. Is it insane to expect better? I am beginning to think so.

You are FREE to GIVE as MUCH as you want. Just don't TAKE from Me.

How can you even eat dinner knowing that so many others will not be able to?
