Heights Question

Ok, so I was looking at picture of the Magic and noticed that the elevators are glass. Being a bit :scared1: of heights I was wondering how "scary" they are for those of us with a touch of the acrophobia bug.

And now that I'm thinking about it what about the verandahs? We have a verandah on deck 8.

I am afraid of heights and was worried about this too! I just stood away from the glass and tried not to think about it!! I think you will be fine :)

No fear of heights for me so I can't give you an opinion BUT only the midship elevators are glass. Front and Aft are regular enclosed elevators so if the glass ones do bother you, you are by no means out of luck!

On the midship elevators you only have to worry about looking down from deck 5 down to 3. Below deck 3 and above deck 5 it is like you are in a normal elevator.

Don't think you will have any problems.

More likely to be an issue if your claustrophobic - none of the elevators are very big. I have trouble with exposed heights (think grand canyon trail type) but I didn't have any trouble on the ship.

There are also tons of stairs, and with you staying on deck 8, it is easy to pop up the stairs to deck 9 for activities, etc.

I agree that the elevators should be no problem, but not so sure about the veranda...we were in deck 6 and it's a good way down. I'm a little afraid of heights and had no problems on any of the decks.

I have to pop in here and tell ya...
I was on a cruise and got stuck in the elevator.. yup... everyone got off ..I got in...No one else in there just me....the doors close and .......Nothing....It didnt move and the doors wouldnt open...Thank god it WAS glass...as I could see the atrium desk area....So ..I got on the phone and let them know...I saw them wave to me and asked me to sit tight..(like I was gonna go somewhere)...It took about 5-10 mins...
If it wasnt glass I would have paniced....As it was ..I just sat back and took the best look around the atrium, I took the whole trip...
It wasnt too bad....I would never like it to happen again though :bitelip:

Being on Deck 8 means that your Varanda will be about 80 feet above the surface of the water.

I am definitely afraid of heights and we did have a verandah for our last cruise. There was no way I would stand right at the edge and lean on the railing, but I felt reasonably comfortable standing back a little or sitting in the chairs out there.

The mid-ship elevators aren't too bad - I am not comfortable during the part you can see out (deck 3 to 5), but I was able to do it if needed. I prefer the fore and aft elevators - no glass and usually seem to be faster.

My acrophobia is pretty severe and this was a real worry for me before our first cruise. I have found that it isn't much of an issue most of the time on the ship. I do tend to avoid going too near the outer railing on deck 10 (When I need to be up there, I stay toward the center.) The inner railing isn't too bad since it only looks down to deck 9. I also don't like the area at the front of the ship (near the sports deck) where people go for their "titanic moment". My DH & DS liked going up there - I couldn't even do it and was panicky on their behalf when they were there! :rotfl2: (I know this is silly as long as I am standing on terra firma - but all logic goes out the window when confronted with the reality!)

I hope this helps,

Not necessarily.

You're making the assumption that the floor of deck 1 is at the water line (which I think is NOT the case - but it IS above the water line) and that each floor is about 10 feet high (maybe on average but the "stateroom" decks seem shorter than 8 feet and decks 3, 4 and 5 are different)

Who uses the elevators? I would have gained 20 pounds if I hadn't used the stairs.
7 cruises, never used an elevator on a ship.

I quoted a height of ABOUT 80 feet.

If you didn't like may answer, then how about coming up with your own estimate and justify why it is better than mine.

THE BETTER ANSWER (with supporting documentation)
I found some profile images of the Disney Ships. Using these images, I determined the ratio of the ships length v. height of deck 8 from the water line. Here's the results:

Ship Image #1
Length: 591 pixels
Deck 8: 62 pixels
Ratio: 10.5%

Ship Image #2
Length: 426 pixels
Deck 8: 46 pixels
Ratio: 10.8%

Ship Image #3
Length: 968
Deck 8: 99
Ratio: 10.2%

Those ratios average out to 10.5%
With a documented length of the Disney ships being 965 feet, that means...

Deck 8 is 101 feet above the water line!

Anyone else care to do better?

HooKooDooKu -- SORRY

I wasn't trying to slam you or anything - just pointing out that the 8th floor is approximately 80 feet above the "ground" doesn't necessarly hold true on the ship.

We've cruised on deck 2 and there are times that I would say that we were 40 feet above the water, other times the water seemed much closer.

Standing up on deck 10 during the Panama Canal crossing I would say that it is much higher up than 100 feet (the standard 10 feet per floor). But there's NO comparing the height of deck 10 to standing at the top of Summit Plummet (approx 120 feet) - the Magic is WAY shorter than Summit Plummet :teeth:

BTW: I like your methodology in comming up with a height of 101 feet.

I agree with TVguy-if we hadn't stuck to the stairs most of the time (and the gym every other morning) I'd have gotten off that ship ALOT heavier. Must be those drinks of the day.

Well given that Deck 8 is 101 ft, and the average deck height from previous calculations (accounting for Deck 1 NOT being at the water line) is more than 10 ft, that would mean that Deck 10 is ABOUT 125 ft (or about 130 ft from eye-level to water level). We can go back and count pixels again if you need better than 125ft.

What I really found annoying was that I could find tons of web references indicating the length, beam, and draft of the ship. But nothing wanted to give you a clue about the height.

very scared of heights and never had a problem. I mean i can't even ride rollar coasters without closing my eyes and I didn't feel like i was going to fall or that heights were ever a problem
