Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho. It's off to the Grand Floridian We Go! June 2014 (Update: Video)

It's indeed a bummer that the lobby is boarded up, but it wasn't too much of a distraction. If I had planned to stay at the Poly all week, I think that's when I would have been really disappointed. Having to wonder what's going on behind those walls every single time you boarded the monorail. Regardless, I'm sure you'll have an amazing time celebrating Andy's birthday at 'Ohana on your trip. :thumbsup2

I just have to say its so awesome and sweet that you remember Andy's name! :flower3::goodvibes

Oh Matt, those family pictures from outside the GF are amazing - how great to get to take those. Love the one with the grandparents and all the grandkids together. Also think the one of your family is quite nice - perhaps a future Holiday Card ;)

Love 'Ohana - I think it just works great that it is served family style but there is so much food and so much variety it is almost like a buffet ... though I could probably just have the potstickers and the bread pudding and be happy

Love the picture of the kids from 2003 .. though scares me to think how quickly kids grow up

Glad you had a great meal at Ohana. The kids weren't up for recreating the 2003 photo? Pretty ironic that you had the same table.

The dusty table was funny and rather surprising. I would figure the mousekeepers would be dusting those things daily.

As a train lover, I'm interested in hearing about the steam train tour.

All caught up on your TR!! Such a good idea to take family pics on the G.Flo grounds. SO GORGEOUS! They turned out really well. The white goes well with the background too!

I love Ohana!! Looks like your wife enjoyed a Pina Colava!! Those are good, but I'm impartial to the ones in the pineapple! :thumbsup2 Love those lapu lapus!

Excited for more!

Your "throwback thursday" picture is great. Princess looks so much like Pickle does now. :) The meal at Ohana looks awesome! It looks like you all very much enjoyed your family time. :)

Your mom's amazing! That's a lot of coordination w/ such a large group even when planning far ahead.

I love dinner at Ohana! Just like you it isn't really because of the food, even though it is pretty good!! It is such a great atmosphere with everything going on there! We have not eaten there for dinner in a really long time, lately we have been going to Kona instead, I love their Caterpillar Roll! Yum! Anyways, it looks like all of you had a really fun time together! I can't believe that a table like that went undusted for so long!! Yuck! Now I think I would like to have one of those drinks from your dinner!! :thumbsup2

Now I'm regretting cancelling my Ohana ressie! I think I've changed my dining reservations at least 50 times! It's going to just be my husband & I, for 12 nights, and therefore, we can do whatever we want. No one else to please. Every time I read a food report, I change my mind again, LOL.

Your picture for TBT is as amazing as your current ones. You're a great photographer! Love the photo of the GF lobby from above!

I can't wait to eat at Ohana! It looks like so much fun!
Love that you were at the same table again. That is very cool.

There were some really special pics in this update. I love the one of Princess and her mom at Ohana as well as the one of her and baby back at the sitting area at the Grand. Also the pic you got of everyone from a few floors up.

Do you guys put photo albums together on Shutterfly or a similar site after your trips? They would make perfect gifts for the other members of your travel party!

Thanks Phil. Good idea on the holiday card. We've hover done one of those before, so that might be fun. I hear you to think how quickly kids grow up. Seems like yesterday that Princess was just a little girl... and now, well she starts high school next week. Wow!

Thanks! You know, I didn't even think of having the kids recreate the photo. It's a great idea, though :thumbsup2 Stay tuned for the photos from the train tour.

Thanks for the nice comments, and for sharing the name of the drink!!! I think I'm going to have to try one of the pineapple ones next time :thumbsup2

Thanks Kelley!

Thanks, and I agree, she is pretty amazing pixiedust:

Thanks Andrea! We are pretty much on the same page about 'Ohana. We've tried Kona Cafe before and really liked it too! Yah, that dusty table was surprising. I can't believe that as much as Disney prides itself in keeping things clean, that they let this slip. :cool1:

Thanks Teresa! I hear you. With so many excellent restaurants at WDW, it's really hard to narrow it down to just a few!

I can't wait to eat at Ohana! It looks like so much fun!
Love that you were at the same table again. That is very cool.

You'll love it!!!

Thanks Jessica. Stephanie really likes that one with Princess leaning on her shoulder too.

We've done the photo books in the past, but find that they often just collect dust on the shelf. But we do tend to look at the digital photos from time to time. (I have a Mac Mini hooked up to the TV and it's great for slideshows and vacation videos.)

Day 10 - Thursday the 12th - Part 1 - Steam Train Tour

Another big day ahead! Buddy has been a train fan since he was a toddler, loving all things trains! I remember hearing about "Disney's The Magic Behind Our Steam Trains Tour" when he was little and always wanted to take him on it, but it had a minimum age of 10. He was 11 now, so this was a long time coming! :hippie:

We checked with everyone else in the group a couple months earlier to see if anyone wanted to join us. My dad and Uncle Steve expressed interest, so we turned out to have a group of 4 guys on the tour.

The tour went from 7:30 to 10:30am, so we got up early and headed out before everyone else... and we planned to meet up with them later in the day. So, the next part of the TR is from the perspective of Buddy and me, and then Stephanie will follow up with a few posts about their morning.

The tour was supposed to start at 7:30am sharp and they don't wait for anyone who is running late, so they encouraged us to arrive at the gates between 7 and 7:15am. Our plan was to hop on the monorail around 6:50am or so. That's an early start. Good thing we didn't stay out too late last night!

We arrived at about 7:05am and we were the first group to arrive for the tour. So we hung out for a few minutes.

And then after a few others showed up, our tour guide, Leanna, started passing out name tags and headsets.

The headsets used some sort of wireless technology to pick up Leanna's microphone. Which was nice because it made it easy to hear her when there was a lot of ambient noise from the park and or trains.

We started off by heading inside towards the Main Street train station. When we first entered the park, she insisted that we not use cameras or video because there were maintenance workers and vehicles scattered about. And it's policy to not let people take photos of the park in this state. We probably spent about 45 minutes in the train station. She walked us through and explained the history of trains in WDW and how they acquired each of the steam locomotives, how they got their names, when they were put into service, etc. A lot of the posters, photos, and memorabilia scattered around the station was used to support the stories. Pretty interesting stuff!

After we had been in the park for for a few minutes, the maintenance workers had all left and we were able to take photos. Wow, this is even more empty than when we came before the rope drop on Monday!

Before the opening ceremony, we all walked out into the main circle to see the train pull up from inside the park. We could hear the music and stuff, it was pretty exciting. And a first for me, to see the opening fireworks from inside the park!

And a couple minutes later, the guests swarmed in. I'm sure they were headed for Anna and Else and/or 7DMT.

And a few minutes after that... It was time to head up to the train platform.

We headed to the last passenger car.

Are we having fun yet? You betcha!!!

Interestingly, the first train of the day is not for general passengers. I knew the train always pulled in with the characters all riding on it and waving to the guests as it pulls into the station for the daily opening ceremony. But I didn't notice that the cars that the characters ride on don't have any rails on the left side of the train. This is so they can stand on the edge and wave at the guests as they arrive without being partially hidden. But this isn't safe for kids and stuff, so this first train makes its way back to the roundhouse without any passengers.

So, with that being said, the train chugged along and took us to the back of the park so that the locomotive could swap its passenger cars. She told a lot of stories, such as the fact that Pirates of the Caribbean was added the park after the train track was already in place. Most of the Pirates ride is actually outside of the train track's circle, and the point when you go down the drop on the ride, you are actually going below the tracks. And then... a little ways before the Storybook Circus Train Station, there is a track switch. The train passes it going forward, and then backs up on the line.

Interestingly, they made us put our cameras away as we made our way backwards through this junction line to the roundhouse. After we arrived at the roundhouse, we were OK to take photos again.

We were on the Roger E Brogie. It dropped us off, and then pushed its cars back into the roundhouse. (Funny, this roundhouse isn't round.)

They decoupled it from the train cars, and then it moved forward to switch tracks and then pick up a normal set of passenger cars.

Interestingly, they said that the locomotives don't have brakes of their own. (They rely on the brakes of the cars that they pull.) So, there is an art to moving backwards at just the right speed to stop in time for the cars.

Next we focused our attention on the Walter E Disney.

We learned about the various preparations required to get the trains ready each morning, and watched them start the fire in the engine. Pretty darn cool!

After that, Leanna took groups of four of a time to go up and see inside the locomotive more closely.

I knew that we'd be up very close to everything inside the locomotive, and that it would be hard to capture everything up so close, so I put the fisheye lens on my camera. I goofed around with it for a few minutes before it was our turn.

It's fun how the lens makes straight lines curvy. You wouldn't know it, but I'm only a foot or two away from my dad in this next photo. (Look at the shadows.)

Oh, and the other thing worth mentioning is that the trains lived on the ground floor of the roundhouse, but the monorails are kept directly above them. We didn't see any monorails back here, but it was pretty cool to see all the monorail lines and switches above us!

Next it was our turn!

We got to see how the various controls worked up close. Too cool!

Soon after that, the train was ready to go, and it was time to head back into the park and pick up our first passengers. We got to see the train blow off it's extra steam before we got on the main line. Seeing the shadow of the steam across the ground was pretty darn cool!!!

We made our first stop at the Storybook Circus train station and a bunch of guests boarded the train with us. They also refilled the train with water and then we made our way back to the Main Street train station. From there, we headed down for refreshments and bathroom breaks down by the City Hall.

Minnie and Pluto waived as they passed by.

Finally, we headed back up to the second floor of the train station for a final presentation on the history of Walt Disney’s lifelong passion for steam trains and how he decided to make them an integral part of Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom. Pretty cool stuff!

All in all, the tour was really awesome and I'm glad we went on it. Everything was great. Leanna, was nice and did a good job, but she wasn't really a train enthusiast and wasn't able to answer a lot of the questions. But at least she didn't pretend when she didn't know, which is appreciated. If you are even slightly interested in steam trains, I would encourage you to take this tour!

After the tour, Buddy and I parted ways with my dad and Steve. We had a date with Space Mountain coming up soon!

This tour looks like a lot of fun! I'd like to take my grandsons on it someday. Between my two sons and their stepsister, we have five. They're too young right now, 8, 3, 2, 20 months, and almost 4 months, so we have a ways to go! At this rate, doesn't look like we'll have any princess things to do, unless my daughter comes through with a girl! Not that she has much pressure on her, LOL!

We'll be doing our first tour on our September trip! So excited. It's the Marceline to Magic tour, in the Magic Kingdom. Can't wait!

MarbleBob, I'm only on page 7 of this trip report. I'm really enjoying it. Love all your photos.

We own 750 points at the Villas of the Grand Floridian. We have three one week trips in a one bedroom booked for this year. A week in Dec, Jan and March.

Your photos of the Grand are Grand.

I love sitting on a lounge chair on the sand at the beach pool. One day last year Cinderella's carriage drove by with a bride and groom. There were six white ponies pulling the carriage. It was a pixie dust magical moment.

When I'm not at the Grand I love reading about it.

Than you for taking the time to write this Grand report.

Wow 5 grandsons! You'll have to keep this tour on the radar for a future trip. It was awesome.

The Marceline to Magic tour sounds fun too! Marceline is such a cool town to visit, I bet hearing about it from the WDW perspective will be interesting. I hope you have lots of fun on it!

Welcome Candy! Nice to have you reading along with us. :hippie: Owning points at the Villas sounds incredible. And three visits to the GF in one year!!! That's awesome, and I hope you make some more amazing memories!

Day 10 - Thursday the 12th - Part 2 - Buddy Time

After we finished up the steam train tour, we said goodbye to Steve and my dad and headed over towards Space Mountain. We arrived a couple minutes early for our FP+ time, but they let us in anyway.

I think I may have mentioned it earlier, but I LOVE the Space Mountain queue... especially the space music. So cool!

And few minutes later, we were on the ride. I tried for a better selfie through the light tunnel.

And then the ride photo.

Good times all around. This was the second time that Buddy and I rode Space Mountain on a solo mission. After we exited the ride, we explored the shop and arcade for a while.

At that point, it was a little after 10:30 and we were pretty hungry from getting up early. We decided to make our way back towards Main Street to see if Casey's Corner was open. I popped the fisheye lens back on my camera for a couple more interesting shots on the way over.

It turns out that Casey's Corner wouldn't open for another 10 minutes or so, so we headed back to the firehouse to get some more Sorcerer's cards.

There was a big line for Casey's out on Main Street, but nobody was waiting on the inside. We asked a cast member if we would be able to enter from here, or if we should go around to the main entrance. She said no problem, just stay behind the rope and she'll remove it for us when it was time. Cool!

We only had to wait a couple minutes.

We both went with corn dog nuggets and fries.

I'm not into fried food so much as I used to be, but when you are in the mood, these are pretty darn tasty!! Especially dipped in a lot of mustard :goodvibes

Next up, we had a FP+ for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. We had rode it earlier in the week, but having a train theme, it's still one of Buddy's favorites. I enjoy it too. I love the "Old West" theme.

Stopping for a photo on the way.

And we made it!

90 minute standby. Sure glad we had Fast Passes!!!!

Hey Buddy, what do you want to do next? He suggested taking another ride on the train, getting on at the Frontierland station. Pickle had her big day on Monday, and Princess was able to roam around the parks unsupervised, so this was Buddy's turn to pretty much do whatever he wanted. The train again!?!?? Sure Buddy. :thumbsup2 We ran into Cassie's gang (and Princess was with them) so we rode with loop with them, and then parted ways.

Buddy wanted something sweet, so we stopped at the Churro cart in Frontierland. I'm not the biggest churro fan, so I took a pass.

Buddy was ready to head back to the resort and go swimming, so we started heading towards Main Street. On the bridge heading back to the hub, we stumbled upon a family of ducks. Quack, quack...waddle, waddle...quack, quack. How cool!

We followed them for a while and then I heard the Bakery calling my name.

I was in the mood for a cookie, sugar cookie to be exact.

Perfect, just what I needed. Buddy asked if he could have some apple slices. Sure, why not? (This might have been the healthiest thing he ate all day.)

After that, we made our way to the boat dock and hopped on.

And we made it...

We arrived back at the resort about 20 or 30 minutes before Stephanie and the others did (about 1:30pm). We ended up just chilling out in the room for a little while until they came back and were able to regroup for the afternoon.

Stay tuned... next up, Stephanie will be sharing how her morning went.

.

I just read your section on the steam train tour and it was a little different from the two I did I wonder if yours was on an ENH morning as when I took it they first brought out the train the Lilly Belle was pulling it she's actually way getting some service right now so that's why they have to change cars right now.

Anyway the started the tour with her stopping dead centre on the station for pictures and then she takes off on a lap around the the park to check all of the signals are working and then returns to the main station where we got on the last car and then go around the park to the at the time toontown fair sation where we backed up into the round house after a quick view inside it they then pulled the train out and had us get off of it before they pulled her back out to do the opening show. After that we saw them redying two of the other trains for service and got to look at one before boarding it to head back into the park. On one of the tours they did a pressure test on route to the park another they did it at toon town. We didn't pick up passengers on any of them we actually pulled into main street empty and the first passengers of the day were all watching us get off wondering how we got on it before they ddi. The next part was the same with the history of walt and the hsi love of trains in a corner of the station. Also they keep the Lilly Belle out just ahead of the first train so they can test the block signals that trigger the emergency breaks, if she gets to far ahead they have to go to the tunnel over Pirates where they can manually do that. Here's a link to my pictures from those tours https://www.flickr.com/photos/11288498@N02/sets/72157632575539121/

Just got caught up on your fabulous family dinner at 'Ohana and your amazing train day with Buddy ... Great all around and glad to read a good review on 'Ohana : ) I've always thought it's the whole experience that makes it special as well. Love each of your kiddos had special days of fun at WDW as well as fabulous Family time. Such a memorable trip for all of you

The steam train tour looked so fun! Ever since we took Keys to the Kingdom, we have been reading more about all of the other tours! We wanted to try the Steam Train Tour but it isn't being offered on our next trips, I don't know what we are going to do with the Railroad being closed for refurb!

I would have thought the CM giving the Steam Train tour may have been a little bit of a train enthusiast, the CM who did our KTTK tour sure was, she said that was her favorite job she ever had with Disney! Oh well! I am glad you guys had fun!

Love the photos! I should get Jeremy to take more shots with our GoPro since I don't have a fisheye lens for my camera, the shots they take are so fun, especially at Disney when there are so many options to shoot! The GoPro at least takes a really wide angle!

Wow, the train tour looks really neat - and how cool to be on the first train of the day - which isn't even really the first regular train but a special train!

And to see them change trains and all the controls up close - too cool! I also just loved the look of all the trains and train tracks and then the monorail lines above it - like multiple generations of train travel together :thumbsup2

Do you think Buddy was a good age for the tour? Obviously every kid is a little different but as I can definitely see this tour in our future (way out at this point) just trying to gather intel

That's great that you were able to give Buddy his own special time and just to have some 1:1 time with him - and hitting up Space and Big Thunder Mountains along with another trip on the train sounds pretty great.
