I just checked the oil prices because we also use it for hot water. Luckily, we filled up when prices started rising. But I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw it is $6.09 a gallon here. Some local places are even higher and one place was $6.50 a gallon. What are people going to do? Is it possible it will drop in the fall or do you think it will go higher. I know it is diesel and that is outrageous, but I just wasn’t expecting to see that.

Just paid $6.19 for heating oil this morning, $4.49/gal to gas up my car (NH).
My elderly mom had to get oil this week as well and actually cried when she got her bill.

I'm afraid at what I'm going to find at the pump for prices here in CT, I'm going to finally need gas this week after being away for a week and a half on vacation and not having to drive.

Should be better in CT than in surrounding states. CT has stopped collecting gas taxes for the months of April, May and June.

I don't see fuel prices coming down significantly anytime soon. Too much global pressure on oil prices.

My oil company called me because I was due for a fill up, but the price is over $6. I still have over half a tank from my last fill over two months ago so I just told them to put it off for a month or so and see how things are. Totally insane, it was like $2-something a year ago.

With the administration canceling more oil leases today on top of the war in Ukraine still going strong, I wouldn't expect any relief in 2022 unless and until one of those two things changes...and even then, it won't be instantaneous.

$6.51 in Boston last week, I talked to my oil company and asked when I updated my method of payment. Two weeks prior I paid $5.49. Went up over $1 in 2 weeks! I hope prices are not at this level next winter, I really worry about people on fixed incomes. There is no need for this.

We're in NH too! I wrote to our US Senator two weeks ago, expressing fear of elderly freezing this winter...exactly your scenario. I always buy for the year in May (don't know if it will be available 22/23) and had the tank topped off a month ago. It was just about $6 gallon and I paid out of pocket for 10 gallons no big deal, however I paid $2.99 gallon last May. DOUBLE. No one seems to "get it" that I can tell, sigh.

Give your mom a hug for me!

I'm budgeting $10 gallon. DH and I actually went looking at homes last weekend though our home is fairly energy efficient. I want to build a more energy efficient home and put a solar array on a south facing roof that spins the meter the other way. At the rate we're going anyone in a cold climate is at risk IMO. Our electric bill is crazy so space heaters don't make sense. I got my bill for last month and we used 10.5% less but the bill was the same as there was a price increase!

We really don't consume much, but I am already spending about $35 more a week in groceries (2 people) and double for gas. We can absorb it even though I don't like it and there is no reason for it, but it is the heating fuel that is the big issue...no choice but to buy it no matter the price. When it is 20 below what to do?

We tend to get between 150 -180 several times a year.

Our oil is about $6.10, but we (for the first time in 40 years) paid for a capped contract. So back in Nov, our oil was capped at $3.39, when it was costing $3.29. It did cost $150 to get the contract, but we saved that easy. Of course it's always a gamble. If oil stopped at $3. 75, we would have lost money.

We're gas here in the Midwest. When a home fills up for oil, how many gallons are typically bought and delivered?
I used to be able to get through a winter season (in Boston) for about $1200 to $1500 in total. My last delivery (3 weeks ago when oil was $5.49, last week it was up to $6.51) was slightly over $1000. One delivery. If things stay the same next winter, it will probably cost about $5000 to $6000 for the season.

We use 450 +/- a year for 1450 SF. We get four deliveries. My oil company is not even sure they will have prebuy as the market is so volatile. I would pay $6 a gallon now rather than take a chance!

We downsized from about 2000 SF where we used 650 gallons of oil, four or more cords of wood and a pallet of wood pellets (finished lower level). We had our own woodlot, so wood was free, but an effort to say the least.

This is worse than the 1970's as there is no effort being made to ensure we have fuel...until we go green. It's nice to want, but hey, we have to stay warm until we all have a windmill on our roofs LOL!

We were on monthly budget for about 10 years at $54 a month. Then $65 last year, then $105 for a few months, now $135. But even at that, $1,620 a year. Oil much higher.

  • Fuel Oil (#2) Current Average Price is $6.07 / Gallon
  • Propane Current Average Price is $3.95 / Gallon
  • Kerosene Current Average Price is $6.57 / Gallon
NH average prices as of 5/10/2022
