Heathly food budget question about greek yogurt?

I don't mind that tart or anything like that, I am not a sweet freak. But the texture is terrible and you can't do anything about that. If you like eating sawdust then fine, but I didn't care for it at all.

I don't eat yogurt for nutrition anyway, I eat it because I like it.

Also, the bigger portions will have almost 20g of sugar, because they say 1 cup is a portion - where yoplait/dannon yogurts are only like 4oz or less.

It did take me some getting used to - mostly the super-creamy texture though. I add some cinnamon and honey, then eat it with fiber one or all bran cereal. I love it! I just bought one of the big 16oz containers and that will help me get 5 servings out for cheaper, instead of the Fage portion cups (which I had been buying)

I second the Stonyfield Farms Oikos brand - It is AMAZING. In particular the caramel is delicious. I am on Weight Watchers and all of the Oikos brands are only 2 points. I have found that some of the other brands can be anywhere up to 5 points for the same size serving. I do love all of the protein. I can have one for breakfast with an english muffin and be full until lunchtime.

They also have some great coupons you can print from the Stonyfield website - http://www.stonyfield.com/coupons_offers/index.jsp

I like Greek yogurt too but NOT plain. I have become hooked on agave nectar (tastes a lot like honey but very low on the glycemic index, and it mixes a lot easier!) and will put that in it for a sweet taste.

Also, as far as the carbohydrate content, it's going to have some in it because it's a dairy product. If you look at a milk carton, it has carbs in it - not the sweet kind, just the naturally-occurring kind.

And I've been reading over and over that Greek yogurt has more nutritional benefits than "regular" yogurt. More expensive, but worth it! :)

DH and I love Greek yogurt. We call it the sour cream of yogurt b/c of the consistency. We tried the Yoplait version of Greek yogurt. It's NOTHING like Greek yogurt. It tasted powdery. If you want to try a good one try Oikos or Fage.

I actually don't sweeten up the Greek yogurt. I mix it with cucumbers and tomatoes and some spices for a more savory snack.

I like the consistency, but then again, I love sour cream.

The yoplait stuff is horrible. Try the other brands.
Ditto. I tried the Yoplait because I had a coupon but I couldn't even eat it, it was awful. Fage is my favorite brand of Greek yogurt, followed by Chobani. Those are the only other two I've tried so far. My favorite is plain w/ honey. I love the Fage individual cups because the honey is on the side so you can add as little or as much as you want. Those are expensive though. When I add the honey at home, it melts into the yogurt by the time I get to work & eat it. I deal though because it's cheaper that way. The Chobani fruit flavors taste a lot like regular yogurt to me, but they do have a lot of sugar.

I've been reading here and on the internet that you should switch for Greek yogurt if you looking for a healthier version of yogurt. The nutrition class I've signed up for recommends it as well (unfortunately I can't get into the class until the middle of June). I looked at it this week and I'm very confused. It didn't have any fat, but almost 20 grams of sugar. My Dannon light and fit only has around 12 grams of sugar and 2.3 grams of fat.
So how is the Greek better if it has more sugar? I'm sure there is a logical reason but I haven't found anything searching on the internet. I thought I would ask those of you who have switch to a healthier lifestyle.

Also, I've noticed many organic things are higher in fat/sugar. How do you deal with that if you need a low fat, low sugar/sodium diet?

Thanks....

We get Oikos Organic Greek Yogurt (plain). TONS of protein in it! We put our own fruit in it to flavor it.
