Heathly choices should be a choice, not the only option.

First they start using wheat buns and no longer butter and toast the hot dog buns at Beaches and Creme and now they take away the prime rib claiming it is not heathly. I don't want to be healthy on vacation, I eat Ice Cream while on vacation. I figure I walk it off. These changes should be choices not the only options. If I want a white bun slathered in butter and toasted I should be able to get it. We use to love the hot dogs at Beaches and Creme, not so much anymore.

What is next...no longer offering buffets because of portion control. It isn't necessarily what you eat but how much of it is eaten.
ITA...Let people make their own decisions! However, I do like when the healthy options are front and center...especially where kids are concerned.

Butter and prime rib cost $$$$. I'm not entirely sure these decisions are ONLY based on making things "healthy".

I hate to sound jaded, but I feel that you bring up the real issue.

Disney gets to do two things. Appear healthy and save money.

They promote that they're 'healthy', but really if they were 'healthy' they'd take away candy stores, cheese sauce, ranch dressing, Caesar Salads, bacon on anything, hot dogs - not just changing their buns, sugar loaded desserts, bratwurst in Germany, ice cream, butter on the popcorn, coca cola, and the list goes on and on. There are PLENTY of unhealthy options and really very few truly healthy ones.

More likely they are making cost saving choices and making sure that the new item is 'healthier' than the item that it is replacing.

Prime rib has been removed only from the buffet service restaurants; it's still available in full-service restaurants. I have a list of those still serving prime rib.

The reason is not for health, although the executive chef for WDW did tell me that prime rib has a lot of fat. His reference was to the waste involved. Rest assured, no one is trying to force a more healthful lifestyle on you!

I think it is more for cost than healthy options. When you get prime rib form the buffet it really is not prime rib anymore after they cut it as thin as possible to strech the roast as far as they can. You almost have to beg them for a larger piece to get the true taste of prime rib. It is disappointing to see that they keep raising the cost of food, but continue to cut down on what you can get. If I pay for the dinning plan or the Deluxe plan, I want the best that is out there. We noticed on our last trip that if you are not on a plan it is very expensive to eat. I have the feeling they did this so you would stay on property and get the dinning plan so it is more affordable. But what can you do? Pretty soon they will train the security guards to spot food and beverages in the backpacks because disney instituted a no outside food or beverages allowed in the park policy.

One other 'healthy' option we noticed last week...kids mac and cheese. My DDs LOVE mac and cheese and at most places did not like it. One server said she didn't blame the kids, since they have low fat mac and cheese now. Why would they do that? I mean, I'd rather have my kids eat then serve them terrible tasting food...mac & cheese is a staple food for kids. On a side note, at Narcoosses, DD at the whole bowl..it was mickey shaped mac and cheese.

I screamed and yelled and hollered when the buns at Disney World went to all multi-grain ones. Now if I have to eat a hot dog or a burger, it's going to on a kids meal. I've also searched out and found lots of other food items I would have never even looked at because I was always focused on the easy - burgers and dogs.

My husband and I went to Disney World over Thanksgiving weekend and had one table service meal. For all the other counter service ones, we didn't eat one single hot dog or burger.

There are tons of other options. I'm actually glad I'm boycotting the burgers and dogs now.

I also think that the sad truth is that eliminating prime rib was a $$$$ thing. What would be next? - a bowl of carrots instead of carrot cake? (please, NO!:scared1: )
Has it been eliminated from all buffets? A lot of people won't even do the buffets if the "better quality" items are missing. For the cost of the buffets, there's got to be more than "fillers". (My dh reluctantly does the character buffets but would never go if there was nothing but chicken legs and pasta.:sad2: )
...and, BTW, I really do eat healthy at home - but on vacation...I've been known to eat that carrot cake for breakfast!

There are still plenty of unhealthy options for you, and you can choose to not eat at the restaurants that change to your unliking.

But if you want to eat a hot dog or hamburger you have to have a multi grain bun with it. There are no other options at any of the TS or CS places.
I agree with the OP. I don't want to be healthy on vacation. I should have a choice of what bun I get on my burger. My kids can't eat mac n cheese at WDW anymore cause all the TS and CS places changed to fat free mac n cheese. It tastes gross. This in no way will stop us from going to WDW or eating on property, but I still don't have to like it. We just make sure we check the menus before we go and read up on here to make sure what we like will be offered at the places we want to eat.

I think your kids get carrots instead of french fries in their kids meal. :confused3
It does seem the quality of food, and choices has gone down since the DP started, I always thought the healthy stuff was because of the few who might make noise about bad food choices, but it's true there are plenty of unhealthy choices. I just wish they wouldn't mess with foods that have that I'm used to having on a disney trip. (casey's hot dog, or beaches and cream hambuger):sad1:

omg they changed the mac and cheese!!! NOOO I like that!

also with the wheat buns, there are PLENTY of wheat bread products with little to no more fiber than the white bread. You really have to read labels, but yes atleast it's not bleached BUT on vacation i want to be ON VACATION, not counting calories, fiber content or worrying whatsoever, and I want it to taste great NOT HEALTHY.

WHATS NEXT! I agree about the 'cost savings' rather than the 'healthy' savings, they just say healthy since they cant say it's for cost cutting.
Is it healthier to not have characters while you dine, so you dont choke? lol.

The food is my main reason for loving Disney, they shouldnt ruin that! Yes i thought the wheat buns at the CS were not the best.

Like how people eat 5 days out of the year is really important enough to eat wheat rolls, if people cared about that they can do it at home or if they WANT to eat that way on vacation, i agree that it should be a CHOICE, not the only option.

Carrots or apples are default items now but I believe you can still request french fries - some of the menus said in tiny little type on the bottom that french fries and soda were available upon request. However, they're likely to be french fries that were changed to get rid of the trans fats.

Ohh.. I hadn't heard about the prime rib and mac & cheese. DH will be disappointed about the prime rib- that's what he liked at 1900 PF.

I never cared for buffet prime rib enough to get upset over that loss, but why oh why did they mess with the mac & cheese? DD loves(loved?) Disney mac & cheese!

I believe that the Mac and Cheese was changed in either late 2006 or early 2007. It looks like you've been there since then so hopefully DD already tried, and likes, the new stuff too.

I do agree though - Disney has been making a lot of changes to their menus - not all of them good.

Figaro Fries strike me as funny - they've removed the lettuce and tomatoes (arguably the only healthy things on them) and left the cheese and bacon.

If Disney were that concerned about healthy eating, we'd have a choice of appetizers OR dessert on the DDP.

Thank you! We were there last in Jan of this year, so if that's the new mac & cheese we're good. DD7 likes Disney mac & cheese better than homemade! LOL

They took the veggies off of the Figaro Fries? Awww, that ruins them for me. I just don't think I could take the heaviness of fries with bacon and cheese without the veggies to balance it our a bit.
