i've read many threads about the pro's and con's of taking small appliances, like hotpots-electric skillet-toasters-etc, to disney. i'm curious as to whether anyone has ever taken a sandwich maker and what all you can make with it. just thinking...

I would like to find one of these. Where can you buy them?

For the record, I would have no hesitation using one of these or a toaster in the room.

TAKE COVER!!!!! Thank God you didn't ask about a microwave.:D I don't see any reason why you shouldn't bring in anything that is not going to leave a mess or bad odor in the room. Put a towel down under it to catch any mess (to head off that potential argument) and enjoy yourself.

I'll stay out of the debate about whether or not its okay to bring appliances. Suffice it to say that we prefer to stay offsite - one of many reasons for this is that we get a full kitchen to whip up that occasional snack or meal.

Anyway, we got one of those sandwich makers as a gift when we got engaged about a dozen years ago. It seems they were very popular for about a month back then. We used it once or twice, found it to be a waste of space in our kitchen and closet, and sold it at our first yard sale. I can't imagine any reason I would want to take one with me on vacation, especially if I could have a toaster oven instead which I think is a much more versatile appliance. JMHO.

**not debating using said sandwich maker in the room**

My husband bought one of these ("it was on sale!") and in the 3+ years we've had it, he's used it twice. (In fact, I can't really remember if it made the move here...?) He likes it, though. It basically makes grilled cheese but doesn't grill it. He likes to put together ham and cheese on the bread, and the machine basically heats it up. It's a little messy - the cheese tends to spill out the sides. Personally, at home I'd rather just use a griddle, but then, we've never thought about using it on vacation. Now I will hide this thread so he doesn't get any ideas, especially since we can plug in appliances in the car. ("But, honey, now we can have a warm sandwich without stopping at Burger King!")

I would prefer a griddle or electric frying pan.
You aren't as restricted to what you can make as you are with a sandwich maker.
As for a "debate" what is there to debate?
It is no different than people bringing hair dryers, curling irons, humidifiers and things like that.
It sure beats bringing a "Hibachi" into the room, not to mention somewhat safer ;)
Cheers,
Grumbo

Save your luggage space and make your grilled cheese sandwiches using the iron. Level 5 without steam is best.

Reminds me of Mr. Mom - too funny!

Dont use anything flammable, please! And use the GFI outlets.

I agree with the flammable part but any outlet would be ok. GFI outlets prevent shorts if an electrical item comes in contact with water. That's why they put them in the bathrooms. Making a grilled cheese wouldn't pose any risk that way, unless of course you are cooking in the bathroom.

I haven't an opinion one way or another, but I think the debate has to do with safety. I heard that the number one cause of home fires in the US is toasters and toaster ovens. It seems that the crumbs build up and they catch fire very easily. I never leave my toaster plugged in.

I'll vouch for that. In the past 6 months, the toaster oven at my office (2 different ovens actually) caught fire when someone reheated slices of pizza. Some cheese dripped down and ignited. New office rule - no cooking in the toaster oven without the tray.

So keep your toaster ovens clean and keep stuff from getting on the heating element. As for keeping it unplugged, that really wouldn't matter since the fire hazard only exists when the toaster is in use.

Disnee Dad Says..........................................We always bring a hot pot to WDW. Great for soup, ramen, even stews and raviolli if you stir a lot!

Then there is the $2 toaster idea that we have never used, but sounds good. Buy a used toaster a garage sale for $2, in Orlando, buy things like muffins, bread, pop tarts, waffles, all great for the toaster.

When done, unplug toaster and wait for it to cool down( 5 minutes max).

Dump toaster at the end of the trip and fill the space in your luggage with souvenirs!

We did take a George Foreman one year when some friends went with us who were on a tight budget. We stayed at Doubletree and fixed hamburgers one night and grilled ham and cheese sandwich another night. It was very nice to come back and relax in the room and let the kids rest. We had 7 kids between us, of course we had two rooms. We had a sealed container to dispose the grease in the outside trash.

Try the george foreman grill. It cleans very easily. On our last trip in Aug. we did the toaster thing. We also took a waffle iron and made waffles for breakfast. We only did this in a hotel that had a patio door or a front door leading directly outside...Like the All Stars. If you have any doubt about smell or smoke, just open a door.

That does not keep out the smell. Nothing worse than vacationing in a room that smells like McDonalds from the previous tenants. It gets into the mattress and curtains. Allstars has a micro and toaster you can use at no charge in the food court. I did find out after the last time this was posted, by calling the Allstars, that do not allow "cooking" in the rooms or on the walkways to the rooms (which is why they offer the micro/toaster/hot water in the food court). She mentioned that cold cereal or items not needing to be cooked are fine. They obviously may not know it until you leave and they have to do a thorough cleaning..or she mentioned that sometimes people in a next door room will report it and they will do a follow-up. She commented that the rooms are not ventilated for cooking food, and do not have fire extinquishers.

Rick,
Thank you so much for posting this. What may smell wonderful to one, may make another sick.
