Heat Transfer Vinyl cutouts by hand?

Last year for our WDW trip we did hand painted (freezer stencil) shirts for our trip. This year I'm thinking about also doing heat transfer vinyl, but has anyone done this by hand? Or would I need to purchase a Cricut or Silhouette machine to do this?

Yes, it is possible to do it by hand but you will want to keep the designs simple. There is a DIY video on you tube:
