Heard something at work today and thought of you

A co-worker told me she got an invitation to a "housegoods shower" for her friend's sister. She said she didn't know that she was getting married, so she called her to congratulate her. Well, apparently she is not getting married, but she and her boyfriend are moving in together.

She asked how I felt about it. I told her what I thought, but I was wondering how all of you felt about it.

Oh, a detail that helped me decide: they are planning on getting married someday, but not for a year or two.

The things people do never ceases to amaze me. :sad2:

A shower for moving in together and not even getting married? :confused3

What tacky thing will people think of next. Geesh.

Hmmm. Um. I'm "Lil Miss Lenient" on things having to do with showers and etiquette.. but WHAT?!?! :scared1: I'd politely decline and give 'em a gift when they get married, like everyone else.

Is this maybe a new way to say "housewarming party" because they bought a new house together? ... which then I guess I could understand it ... but if it's just because they are moving in together, then, IMHO, I think it's a bit tacky ...

Oh give me a flippin break!!! A housegoods shower? Because they're moving in together? :headache: :sad2:

Yeah, not attending that shindig.

I've been married 17 years. All my stuff is old. I want a housegoods shower!!!! I've put in the time and I deserve new stuff!!!!

And while I'm at it, my wardrobe is crap because I spend everything on the kids. I've got 15 years in as a Mom......I think it's time for a "new wardrobe for me shower" too! :rotfl:

What will they come up with next? :confused3

Seriously.

If two people decide to move in together they should do it when they can afford to buy their own stuff. I've lived with someone before (without being married) and while my parents did buy me a few things I don't think I would've even attended a party thrown for me to give me a bunch of stuff :confused3. If they just want to celebrate moving into a place together they can throw a housewarming party.

Horrendously tacky.

The only exception would be if they bought a house and had a housewarming party. DF and I had one when we bought our condo, but we weren't expecting gifts. We just wanted to show off our new place and have everyone over for snacks and drinks. :goodvibes

I agree with this. I am so tired of going to showers for people who are getting married for the second and third time and giving them new stuff, when their old stuff isn't all that old because the marriages never last very long.

I think someone should start the tradition of throwing a shower for people who have been married for over 15 years. Heck after paying for two kids my dh and I have less money now than we did when we got married and had no kids!! :rotfl:

Seems weird--but could they just be throwing a housewarming party?

That wouldn't be out of line...but registering for gifts IMHO would be. Though it seems the retail world has folks registering for almost any occasion now..even birthdays.:confused3

Very odd--and I'd be inclined to not buy them any goods.

They're renting an apartment together.

:thumbsup2:lmao: I vote for this! Next month is our 19th anniversary, we qualify. I could really use some new bath towels.

I think the moving in together party is weird unless it is a home warming party but then it wouldn't necesarily be home goods type party would it?

I'm so confused with all these new fangled parties people come up with...I'm feeling VERY old and I'm not even 45 yet!

I...well....what? Aaaack

I'm speechless. :scared1:

Very tacky!! I wouldn't buy them anything nor attend the party. I'm all for people living together while not being married but this party seems ridiculous!

Couldn't have said it better myself..;)

"Me, me, me, me, me..." Enough! :headache:

I want a Disney shower. Just letting you all know that I don't feel like paying for a trip. My requirements are a suite at the GF-only RPC for 14 days, first class flights, and the premium VIP tour each day. When y'all pay for this, then I'll pay for a gift for a shower like the one in the OP.
While they're having the housegoods shower, why not a baby shower too because one day they might want a baby.
People are frickin' nuts.

I feel the same way all of you feel.

They only way I wouldn't think it was tacky is if they were committing to a life-long relationship, but didn't believe in marriage or didn't think "the papers" are necessary.

The sister justified it by saying, "what's the difference if they have it now, or right before they get married." :sad2:
