Heard a rumor...

Grover,
I just read that you had to have a long form birth certificate for your child to apply for the passport. What is that all about.
I have just the regular birth certificates for my kids and was wondering if that would be acceptable for their passport applications? If not, how much did the long type of birth cert. cost and how long did it take you to get it.

Thanks

I just got my passport and it took one week exactly (5 working days) to get it. I didn't even have to leave my birth certificate with them, they scanned everything right into the computer and handed it right back to me. My passport was also mailed directly to my house. At the passport office they said it was a good idea to have it for the U.S., but not crucial. However, I did hear that by 2005 you will have to have a passport to enter the U.S. and they want everyone to have digital passports (don't worry, Canada has been doing this since 2002). Oh yeah, another kind of scarry thing - on the passport application you need to provide 2 references and it says they will be contacted to verify your identity. They never called my references!

Yes they require the long form birth cert..not the wallet size ones...the long form actually shows who the parents of the child are. Here in Mb a birth cert no matter what type is 25.00 but it can take 4 to 6 weeks to get...you can get a rush on it and I was able to pick mine up 2 hrs after submitting the app-this cost me 60.00

Belle--they did not check our references either.

We just went for ours and only needed to use the wallet size birth certificates (certificate though... not the registration)...... I called and asked before going and that's what they told me to bring too!

Really??
They were turning people away at the office here for not having the long form birth cert for the kids. The wallet size is okay for adults. It actually says right on the back of the child passport application that long form birth cert is needed.
Wow-I wish I could have gotten ours without spending an extra 60.00 bucks for the birth cert!

Wow... I was just reading on the passport application forms after you said that to see what the deal was and it does recommend that you have the long form..... I guess we just got lucky maybe??

I was told that the wallet size is ok as along as the kids were born to DH and I after we were married and if we are still married. They told me to mail out marriage cert.. with the kids passport applications.

What do you guys think? Do you think this is enough???

Grover, we got passports for the kids 18 months ago in Winnipeg and we only used the wallet sized BC's. I'm not even sure where their long forms are, lol.

My daughter, then 16, had to go in person to sign her own though. She needed to bring her drivers license as well. We were able to get our son's, then 13 without him being present with just the BC.

I guess mabey they have changed something since then.
They sent away quite a few people the day I was there for not having the long form.
I wish I only needed the wallet size-had it with me!

In March 2003, the passport application was changed (that was around the time I applyed for mine). Maybe the requirements for what type of birth certificate changed then too. I remember that when I went to download my application there was a notice that on suc and such a date the form would be changing. I just waited until the changed occured before I printed it off.
