Dear Shirley,
I loved the President Truman story!.
When my mom was about 19 (this would be about 1949) she worked in a department store in Washington DC on 7th St. The White house is 9 blocks away (1600 Penn Ave).
Many days, she would tell, the shop girls would wait outside to greet the president on his near-daily constitutional walk.
Unfortunately, a few years later, Puerto Rican extremists tried to assassinate Mr. Truman (a secret service agent was killed) and thus ended our routine access to Presidents.
