Heard a Rumor about Key West

Couldn't they add Costa Maya anyway?
Or is it just impossible to travel that far (all ports) without the two "at sea" days?
Just hope that they don't add Jamaica to the Western to replace (if necessary) Key West.

It would be nice to keep KW. I like the idea of 1/2 day @ sea with a port call on the same day.

I am truly sorry if I have offeneded ANYONE-
I am not sure why I am being targeted for expressing my feelings-
As a parent-if I had ever been to Key West and knew what to expect- I would have had my DD stay on the ship- but because I cruise DCL I assumed it would be somewhat child friendly. We did not see what we saw at any other port- I am sure it is there but not just thrown out in everystore window or on the curb.
I never meant that family was defined as DH, DW,+DKids! What I meant was that DCL is targeted at people who have children. That doesn't mean that they don't attract others- meaning whoever loves Disney in general- which I do. I think I enjoy WDW more than my DD does! The ship is rated #1 for children out of all other cruiselines.
I was responding to Key West being taken off as a port and why it wouldn't bother ME. I can only speak for myself and choose not to say or quote others who are simply expressing their feelings.

Having been to Key West several years ago, we are looking firward to going back. However, we are not looking forward to some types of behavior that was displayed so openly by an inordinate number of same sex couples.

I have no problem with their sexual proclivity, just the extreme openness in which it is flaunted.

We are aware, and also concerned, about the volume and nature of varoius paraphrenalia offered so publicly for sale.

Double darn. While in Key West I witnessed no flaunting AND didn't see any of this "merchandise" displayed. Then again a couple of years ago a client entered our offices rather upset. He insisted on using profanity and tried to display every conceivable part of speech for the f-word. The gentleman threatened everyone, making an announcement that he was licensed to carry a weapon in NYS. Our office manager was able to escort him out of the building (with the added threat of pressing the "panic" alarm). Afterwards, the office was abuzz with this for hours. I kept quiet. You see, yours truly had been so engrossed in his work that - although situated very near the "action" - I never knew anything had taken place. So this, my concentration, serves to make Key West look like a day-care center through my eyes...

How is it going with ya - Norm and I are heading down to Key West in a couple of weeks - need to take care of a few things concerning my uncle's passing - man it is sure going to be different this time going down as a tourist - I can not for the life of me imagine where the shop is around the aquarium that displayed that type of stuff that was being talked about - knowing KW as well as I do. I know that they did closer to Eaton Street, but around the aquarium? - oh well am going to check it out while I am down there - There should be no flaming - your feelings are your feelings and that is it - I did apologized since I felt that maybe I had overstepped my bountries - too as for seeing display of behavior - the only thing I have seen was a couple that went well beyond the call of the public place we were in - and they were a straight couple - maybe it is around me and I don't catch things too quickly - too I don't stay around that end of Duval Street too long - again you will find anything - anywhere around this world - its sad, but it happens.

I have learned first hand about the more subtle emotional strain inherent in a close relative's passing. The feelings which come with "settling affairs" a bit of time after the funeral. Other family members have moved on (as they should) and friends return to their daily routines (as they should) while we have no choice but to revisit any and all personal turmoils. It's not something I envy...

Too many years ago I worked in mid-Manhattan (eventually tired of the commute from/to Long Island). Our office was celebrating the birthday of a female employee who had a most pleasant sense of humor. Someone foolishly made the mistake of assigning yours truly the task of bringing in a birthday cake. At that time there was a bakery in Manhattan called The Obscene Bakery. A person could choose a cake from quite a selection of rather unique offerings. So I purchased a large chocolate cake with vanilla filling in the shape of a well-endowed male member. Ah, the days, the days...

Shirley- Actually we all set off on foot to find me a pair of shoes to go horseback riding in on Cozumel. After passing numerous risque displays in shop windows and on tables set out on the sidewalk, it was decided that BIL would take the kids to the aquarium and we would continue looking for me a suitable pair of closed toe shoes.
Thank you to Buckaroo- it is just sometimes when a comical word is needed to lighten things up.
As said before- I was expressing my feelings- not negative towards anyone- just that I was suprised by what we saw!

Hi Julie, buckaroo and all - honest I wish you would have written me a note and I would have been more than glad to have sent you a bunch of stuff on Key West - I always advise everyone where to go and where NOT to go - I knew of a great place for riding shoes that was NOT on Duval Street - Most of the garbage you see as described is between Eaton and Southard Street - the city has tried to cut down the foolishness that is shown - believe me it was worse at one time - I too have gone with grandkids and found myself ok how do I explain this, but when it was done - that was it - sometimes I just tried to ignore it and most of the time, I parked on Whitehead and walked to the end of Duval Street where it isn't bad at all - that is where the aquarium is - I have talked myself blue in the face to the higher ups down there to clean up the act, but here we go again - it brings in dollars - you are not dealing with "conchs" there - just wannabes but they left out the morals somewhere else - I love my hometown and I do defend my hometown, but I am also an honest person and stand up for what is right - unfortunalty children around the world , as I mentioned before, are exposed to many things that take away their childhood before they have had a chance to be children.
Buck - thanks for your imput - yep I am having a very difficult time with the passing of my last uncle, but as you said sometimes after everyone has gone, someone has to do the "dirty" job - mine is being responsible for the entire family resting place at the cementary but at least I do get to go back "home" if only for a little while.

Don't know if this is related, but some staff mentioned that DCL is considering an itenerary change on one, or both (didn't say which) of the 7-nighters involving an overnight stay at Castaway Cay.

We LOVED the stop in Key West on the 7-night Magic last July 20! DD (then 14) was thrilled with the proximity of all the great shops. We took the TROLLEY tour, and had a blast. We also rented a scoot car, stopped at all the hot spots (even had frozen key lime pie dipped in chocolate on a stick!), enjoyed Hemingways, Jimmy Buffets (great Conch chowder/toasted bread), and the entire day. We have the BEST memories from our day. In fact, after our Wonder Cruise this July, we are driving to KEY WEST from Cape Canaveral for a few eves. Yes...It's a FAB. place to see/visit. I, for one, pray it remains on the itinerary. We are planning another Western for next summer.

Before you drive down to Key West and you have time - Norm and I would love to give you all the inside hints of blending in with the "conchs" - getting "conch" rates etc - we have a bunch of pamplets etc on Key West that always seens to help while folks are down there - glad you had a good time in my home town - there are places to go and things to see once you get away from the Northern part of Duval Street -

Having just returned from the Magic this past Saturday, I can say that my family enjoyed Key WEst. We actually saw more of the shops and "behavior" that seems to bother some people in Cozumel. (And some of the drunk, lewd behaviour came form some young 18? year olds from our boat!) We spent the day with the kids having lunch, shopping, and doing the trolley tour in Key WEst and then put the kids back on board at 5:00 pm so we could visit some of the local bars and enjoy ourselves. I honestly could see nothing wrong with Key West that I had to shelter my kids from during the day. I understand that night can be different, but hey, put the kids back on board.

Was on another discussion board and not only heard great things about your shop but they showed photos. Looks like I will have to get in touch with you on-line. My MIL and I will be doing our second DCL but hitting the Western itinerary this time. I have "Disneyed" out my family (DH DD). So I am having them committed and now I cruise with my mother in law. She gets the "Magic" like me. On my first DCL (guest of Walt Disney Travel Company) we could not stop at St Maarten due to weather so we hit KW instead. I was so looking forward to seeing the town after hearing so much about it. But......I made the BIG mistake of checking out the ESPN Sport Bar on Football Sunday. I am a sports hog and 5 hrs later I heard the horn that we were leaving port. So this is my second chance to check out KW. My MIL in a shopaholic I know she will love KW. You will be hearing from me in December to do something "special" for my MIL.

You know - everytime I hear about Hemingway's house - I now chuckle to myself - each time I hear about President Truman, the chickens, just a lot of things - it brings so many memories flooding back and I really smile and say thank you for the memories - as I have told so many - my most memorable memories about mr. Hemingway, was he just didn't like children - he was the only person in Key West with a fence and it was wrought iron - WOW - and if you ran a stick against it - it made noise - it also brought Mr. Hemingway out in his underwear, to which he would stick his hand in a paper bag and bring out rocks to throw at us - my grandfather taught Mrs Hemingway how to speak and write spanish for the grand amount of 25 cents a lesson - she became excellent at it - my uncle that just passed away also tutored her between lessons. As for President Truman - my dad was a cab driver on the corner of Flemming and Duval - every morning when the president came by there, he always waited for my dad to walk with him - my dad learned about the real Mr. Truman and died with the fact he had walked beside a very caring and devoted man - conchs have always had chickens - there was never a home without them from the rich to the poorest - they were part of what made Key West -
anyhow thanks for all the sharing - you made my day today start with some wonderful loving memories of home.
