I have really been trying to change the way I eat. I try to keep fat and calories low on the foods I eat. What are your favorite healthy choices at WDW? We are going in Sept. and will be on the dining plan

Salmon is always a good healthy choice -- and it is offered at quite a few Disney restaurants.

I'm changing the way I eat, too. Is it possible to get healthier foods that aren't seafood? Yep...I'm a rare creature....one raised in Florida, surrounded by the ocean, who won't touch seafood with a 10-foot fork.

What sorts of things are you looking for?

Most places have a roasted chicken type dish. Would that work?

At Beaches and Cream, my DD got a grilled chicken sandwich plain and a side of fruit.

I was also thinking maybe the buffets would have more choices and you could pick what you like. For example, Crystal Palace dinner has herb roasted turkey and you could get the medley of vegetables for the side. They also have mixed greens. I am not sure if the dressing is already on that or if you add it yourself. Then you could control the portion of dressing.

Spoodles has lemon chicken with coucous and spinach and tomatoes.

Olivias has a Key West Sirloin Steak Salad. It looks to be a dinner salad with strips of sirloin steak on top. You could ask for dressing on the side.

Are you watching carbs? Is a salad for appetizer and then pasta marinara ok? You could get that at Alfredos and Tony's Town Square.

Those are just a few thoughts.

You don't have to eat seafood to be healthy. A small steak is actually a pretty good choice. The problem is getting a "small" steak. It seems to me there are two big keys to eating healthy on the dining plan.

1) Waste food. Just get it in your head ahead of time that you are going to waste food. You don't have to eat an appetizer, entrée and desert with each meal. I don't care if everything paid for and thus "free." Don't order more food than you need. And even the food you do order, don't eat it all. If you can't find a small steak you like, go ahead and get the big steak. But as soon at it arrives, cut off the part for you to eat and put the rest away.

2) Be a pest (hum Beauty and the Beast tunes here if you want). Ask for sauces on the side. Ask if that yummy sounding pasta can be made with a lighter sauce. Ask if you can have a piece of fruit for desert rather than the choices on the menu. Ask if you can have an extra vegetable instead of a starch. Or just ask that the entrée come be served without the starch. Be a pest, be a pest, be a pest.

I never thought of asking for things to be made up for me. I did it a lot when I was a vegetarian .

BTW,
I am doing Body for Life, not really low carb. It is more like low everything.

I'm with you there! I'd stick with grilled chicken sammies/ salads, fruit, and sub out fries when possible. Also, share desserts instead of getting your own, and give up the sugary soft drinks (if you havent already)
HAVE A GREAT TIME

1. I usually asked for fruit in lieu of dessert. It's a great way to cut calories but will still statisfy that sweet tooth!

2. Eat vegetarian meals. The calories are lower and all that fiber tends to fill you up for longer periods of time.

3. If veggie is out, get chicken but subsitute the starchy sides with double portions of veggies (ie, broccoli, squash).

4. For your entree, get a salad, pick off the croutons, and order light dressing.

I ate on the dining plan and didn't gain any weight! Sure, it's hard to watch others eating the chocolate cake and fries, but I made sure to get dessert at least once as a reward for all that darn self-control!!!

How a wonderful trip!

I actually found that the dining plan made my eating healthier while I was at Disney. We were eating at nicer restaurants and so the choices were less likely to be fatty. No french fries, no burgers. Lots of fish and chicken. My only real complaint is that the restaurants seem to be afraid of vegetables. There aren't a lot of places that will serve you a large portion of vegetables.

I am familiar with the Body for Life way of eating - I don't always do it, tho!!

Most restaurants will be pretty good about special orders for the entree - on salads, ask for dressing on the side. Caesars are not the best choice. Ask for no croutons.

If you do pasta or dishes with sauce, either ask for it on the side or ask for less of it. Often restaurants will grill chicken instead of frying it. At CS wraps work pretty good. I often ask for no mayo or dressing but it is pretty dry!

Desserts - well, fruit is best of course, but this is WDW so pick and choose your favorites and enjoy! Don't you get one day a week for extra things?

Don't drink your calories. Diet soda or even better - good clean water. And lots of it. If you aren't crazy about water - keep a couple packets of crystal light handy.

Split entrees and desserts. Usually the first few bites of a dessert are the best anyhow. And lastly, just be proud of how much healthier you are eating than if you weren't careful about it. As good as the food is, not gaining that 5 or 10 lbs is even better!

Last fall we stayed at CBR and most meals we would get a side "dish" from the market area of fresh fruit cups, or grapes with cheese. It was a great way to make sure the kids were getting enough healthy foods and it was nice to eat "lighter". We aren't big into fried foods or burgers, so we took every opportunity to grab some fresh fruit--although somewhat pricey. They also had yogurt cups, again expensive, but I felt better giving my kids a meal of cheese, crackers, yogurt and fruit sometimes then just processed chicken nuggets.

Hi Anabelle; believe it or not WDW caters to everyones needs... SO many people eat heathly and not only are there things on almost every menu that you could eat; you can also have the chefs in almost any restaurant cater to your needs. People w/ food allergies do it all the time. For snacks I reccomend eating fruit, popcorn, frozen fruit pops and in the bakeries they have sugar free things that taste great as well.
If your just trying to watch what you eat you can do it as long as you stay true to yourself and not over indulge in anything. We will be there in Sept as well and dont want to over indulge in anything too bad... ;)
