We are taking my Mom to Disney in Sept. She had a major heart attack 21 years ago at age 51. She heart medication for the past 20 years and has had no further problems. She is 72 and somtimes gets short of breath. She has an inhaler. Other than that she is relatively healthy. My question is can she safley ride SM and EE. Do anyone of you have these same issues or your parents and do you ride?:confused3 She is going to ask her Doctor but I thought some one here might know.

These rides usually have signs that say anyone with a heart condition should not ride. If your mom had a heart attack she probably should not ride. See what her doctor has to say.

If it were me I would not let my mom ride knowing she has had previous heart problems. Why take that chance.

That kind of advice is best given by a physician.

We can only complicate the matter with our opinions regarding someone we have never met.

Definitely ask the doctor but I think the answer is going to be "no". But she can experience most of those attractions with you. Have her go through the queue with you and when you are about to board, tell the seat person that your mother is not riding. That way, you can all stay together and she'll be able to meet you when you get off the attraction. I've done this with my husband since I cannot ride certain attractions due to a neck problem.

Thank you for the info. Her doctor said she was very health and her heart was fine. I am steel leary though so I think we will do the mild rides and see how she does. She realy wants to ride SM but she has not been to Disney in over 30 years so once she all the stuff to do it most likley will not be a big deal to her. Sometimes I do not trust doctors.:confused3

Her doctor can advise her best. We can only guess at what might be right for her.

I personally would heed the warning signs at the attractions deemed not suitable for people with heart issues. That is my opinon, based only on my own thoughts on the matter, not on any medical knowledge.

I wouldn't do it, but I'm not a Dr. The signs do warn against riding if you have or had previous heart problems.

Good luck. :sunny:

First of all I would recommend her seeing her doctor first. However, this is my opinion: Her doctor might have said that her heart is fine for normal activities. It doesn't mean that she should ride roller coasters. :confused3 Very healthy for a 72-year-old woman is different than very healthy for a 40-year-old. You also mentioned that she takes heart medication for the last 20 years and she sometimes get short of breath and uses an inhaler. Many of these rides increase your blood pressure and heart rate very quickly. That can be very dangerous to many people, especially elderly. The signs by rides do warn against riding if you have or had previous heart problems. I really wouldn't let her ride Space Mountain/splash mountain (not sure which) or EE. :confused3 . There are so many other wonderful fun rides you can go on with her.

My mother is the same age and is as healthy as any 72 year old has ever been. But she is 72. When we went recently, she did not ride that type of ride--not because of her heart, but because those rides can jerk you around a little (or a lot!). Bones are more brittle and cartilage is less forgiving as we age. It's just a fact of life. She knows her body best and can ask herself, "Will my vacation be better at the end of this ride...or over?" Have a great time with your mom.

I'm sorry I don't know who this doctor is but I find it hard to believe that a doctor would tell someone their heart is fine when they have had a heart attack, get out of breath, use an inhaler and have been on heart medication for 20 years. If she is on heart medication then obviously her heart is not fine. Yes, maybe her heart isn't getting any worse then it was but why would she be on heart medication if her heart was healthy? Maybe she should talk to her cardiologist and ask about rollercoasters.
