:sad2: hi everyone.
For a while now my mom has been experiencing some health problems that no one can give an answer to. She has a ringing in her ears, and a terrible echo. Her ear gets better when she holds it though. She also has pressure behind her eyes but weknow that it's not glaucoma. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I miss being around my mom when she would turn the music up and dance with me, and who used have fun and not suffer from depression because no one can find an answer to what if wrong with her. please please help. If there is anything anybody knows please let me know.:sad1:

Ok, I don't mean to scare you but I just have a story that happened to my BF.

She had ringing and was losing her hearing went to the Dr. they did nothing. Said she imagined it!

Next she starts having pressure behind her eye so badly one day she calls for an ambulance. If you knew her you know it must have been horrible. She would never do that.

Anyway they do an MRI...she had a tumor behind her ear, but that isn't what was causing the pressure behind her eye. They still didn't know what was happening with that. After 9 months of this horrible pain...she starts using a saline rinse in her nose. Within a month the pressure is gone and she can see fine again. They think it may have been pressure from her sinuses!

She is doing very well. They didn't operate on the tumor they used a "gamma knife" and the treatment has been successful at this point the tumor has shrunk! Yeah!

Anyway long story but if she hadn't of had the pressure behind her eyes they never would have found the tumor!

Have your mom try the saline solution it may help.

Prayers to you and your family.

Hi. Well, I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and have had since I was a child. It varies from mild to pretty severe at times. There are dozens and dozens of things that can cause it, so it is very difficult to pinpoint. Here is the wikipedia entry on tinnitus that goes into some pretty good detail; it might give you a starting off point for discussions with her doctor at least! Good luck!

I can relate totally to you mom! I have similar problems with my ear. Instead of a ringing, I have a constant pulsing that is horrible. (It's actually sounds like the blood pumping to my brain) Some days are much worse than others and I can't hear out of that ear. I can't sleep at night becuase it keeps me awake. It really depresses me especially on the days when it is so bad that when my DD sings or talks the high pitch hurts like hell. I cry thinking how my children's voices are supposed to be one of the most beautiful sounds to me.

I currently go to a neurologist for it. I went to many doctors and no-one knows what is causing it for sure. After several MRI's, blood tests and a spinal tap, the only t hing they can come up with so far is that I have too much fluid in my brain and it is putting pressure on my ears. I am taking diuretics now to relieve the pressure. At first they worked but they aren't anymore. It also used to go away when I put pressure under my ear, but not anymore.

Does she have any dizzyness with it also? One of the things they thought I might have had was Menieres Disease.

Good luck to your mom, I really hope she finds the answers! :goodvibes

Look, get her to neurologists at the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, UCLA, or Mass General, depending on which is closest. Diagnosis is the hardest thing MDs do, so take her to the best in the world. My wife's dad suffered for months with his local doctor with failing lungs, but after I finally convinced her to get him to Cleveland Clinic, within two hours they had identified his problems as being caused by a rare, but not unknown, side effect of one of his drugs. If we had gotten him there months earlier he might still be with us today...good luck, my thoughts are with you.

Has she been checked for an acousitc nueroma? They are benign tumours that affect the ears and can cause the feelign of pressure within the head. They will cause a ringing and echo.

Other causes of Tinnitus are high BP, certain medications, early stage hearing loss, and non-specific organic causes. (I have tinnitus from the latter.)

The ringing and pressure could be caused by two different root causes.

She should see a nuerologist or ENT and probably get a CAT scan.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I'll have my mom read this tonight. Along with her ear is her eye. they said they think they might know what it is but i don't know what it's called. After time it eventually pulls the color of the eye away from the pupil and keaves the eye deformed. But she went to a docter who is doing test, and he thinks they might be related. Thank you so much for your information,

Thanks to all of you for responding to this thread for DD. She is a wonderful girl and I know that what is going on with me is affecting her although I would love for that not to happen.

I appreciate all of your responses and I am waiting on test results from a new ENT (Neurologist) that I went to see last week. I won't know for about a month what the test results say. He is checking to see if I might have an autoimmune disorder that is affecting both my eye and ear.

I am trying to learnto tolerate the sounds. I spend a lot of time on these boards reading and learning more about Disney as well as other things. I use these boards to help keep my sanity. I would rather sleep as much as possible but my DH says that is not healthy so I spend tons of time on here when I am not working.

We just recently got back from WDW and a vacation that had been planned for well over a year. Believe it or not... I was able to forget a little and have a great time!

Thanks again. I am praying and praying a lot that someone will know something soon and my life can get back to some normalcy.

I hope everything turns out well for you! If you ever need to vent, let me know :) Believe me, I know how bad it can be and alot of people just don't comprehend it. :goodvibes

My husband suffered from similar symptoms. Only he had double vision and severe headaches along with the ringing/whooshing sound in his ears.

After seeing neurologists, ENTs, ophthalmologists and every other doctor you can imagine we finally found a doctor in Milwaukee who could diagnose him. He had meningitis! Countless doctors missed it on his MRI's, CT scans and every other test you can imagine. It took massive doses or steroids to help him, and trust me, the side effects from those steroids were not pleasant. I'm just so grateful he was diagnosed as was able to be treated.

It is a horrible feeling to not know what is wrong, :grouphug: I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks again.

"Stimpy" When I read that you cry because the sound of your DDs voice hurts your ears, I can totally relate. That is one of the things that depresses me the most. My DD also has a beautiful voice, but the "pitch" of her voice truly hurts and echoes sometimes when she talks or sings. I cried to my DH about that. How can something I love also cause me pain. I sometimes feel like a bad mom. I know that when I ask my daughter to speak quietly it hurts her feelings and that is never my intention. I "eat, sleep and breathe" my children. They are the reason that I wake up every day. I hate that they do not understand this thing that is going on.

The doctor that I just started seeing believes that the problem that I am having with my ears could also be related to the problems with my eye. My eye doctor says that my what is happening with my eye is clinically consistent with the early stages of ICE syndrome (which can be very ugly). The ear doctor thinks I might have something called Cogan's. Whatever it is... I hope they find out soon so that I at least know the cause. Maybe they can do something to help a little.

Now... with all of that being said... I am determined to try to stay as positive as possible. I am going to try not to turn all of our lives upside down. I will keep praying and be optomistic. I believe that I can get through whatever comes my way as long as I have faith!

Thanks again to all of you for your responses and helping my DD to cope. I am now going to read some more posts on the Dis which helps to keep my mind off of everything else.

It sounds like you have a great daughter! :goodvibes My DD is only 3 so she doesn't really understand when I have to leave the room because it is just too much for me sometimes. I try so hard not to and pretend everything is fine. Fortunately it isn't that bad all the time, but when it is,it's bad! I have it all the time, but sometimes it's just alot worse. I have another neurologist appt this week, and I hate going to doctors to begin with :scared:

I went to an eye specialist too but he didn't find anything. I still have to go to him often too.

I try not to let everything interfere with life too much! I'm sure your doctors probably mentioned this but I found limiting caffeine can help sometimes. i also found going to sleep with the tv on helps drown out the noise....fortunately my DH works nights :lmao:

My MIL suffeers occasionally from this. Her Doctor told her to get one of those sound machines and run it so the sound of the wind (or waves etc) would drown out the ringing.

Good luck

Good luck with your neurologist this week. I hope he/she has some answers for you also.

I also have cut way back on the caffeine. I used to drink about 2 cups of coffee a day. I have not had my coffee in about 2 months now. I have had a few small cups of decaf at church the last couple of Sundays just because I love the taste. I also have heard that cutting back on sodium can help. I have been taking something that one of the ear doctors recommended called T-Bio. It is an herbal medicine that has ginko-biloba and some other things. I have been taking it for about 6-1/2 weeks but am told it can take 60-90 days before it starts working. It is supposed to help with the blood circulation in your inner ears and help with excess fluid. My new doc says that he does not really believe in this but if I want to take it... it should not hurt anything. I just have to be careful what I take because of the pressure in my right eye. (I use 3 different drops a day to help with that). I am going to keep taking the T-Bio, because I am sure you understand, am willing to try anything that might help.

I also have better days than others but always have the sound and sometimes the echo. I have learned what sounds to be around that help drown out the noise. My ceiling fan seems to help. Wierd huh?

I will keep you in my prayers. Please post an update if possible after you see your neurologist.
